  2. Climate change, guess old buzzword wasn't working on Climate Change Finally Impacts Important Industry · · Score: 4, Insightful

so lets latch on to something generic... even though it occurs all the time we seem to think its only bad now.

Its always worse for those of the current generation, we conveniently forget the previous ones. I have some grandparents who can tell you about the real hell they faced in Kansas during those drought days way back when, makes the pansy crap we complain about today just that.

I guess with all the stories about the earth having not warmed recently, taken a year or two dive, that the lead off words must change to fuel this engine of profit for certain groups and businesses. How much barley production is lost to other more cash ready crops? With the current increases in the value of corn and wheat because of the misguided ethanol production in the US would it not make sense that other areas shift to fill the gap?

Putting climate change in the same story as beer either points out the hypocrisy of it all or just shows how silly we are willing to become

So they aren't a great example.

Its not like either party wants it fixed, they do far better crying an election was stolen than do actual work.

It also gives them an out, elections are the ultimate ego bitch slap, its no fun when people don't vote for you and you lose, it means people didn't like you and that hurts

  8. At least the movie got the costumes right.... on New Dune Movie Confirmed · · Score: 1

There were only three things from the movie that "irked" me as a big fan of the books.

    2. That STUPID EFFING CAT
    3. Rain at the end.

Now I like the SCI-FI version too, but I like the movie more because...
    1. The characters actually look like they were described in the book, hair color anyone?
    2. The costumes were good and looked right.
    3. Because I really liked how Paul and his relationship to Gurney, his dad, and his mom, came across on the screen.

I am with others, there are other books they can make movies out of instead, do them. I would love to see someone pull off the books, or even some of the newer books, with their ever so NOT-PC issues. (like using women for wombs)

On XP I just removed it totally from the desktop and get at it through explorer. I saw a mod that allowed it to live in the system tray which I think is a better solution. I understand that on my Mac that its a native part of how the UI operates but at least I can keep the whole bar down there off my screen or scale it so its not annoying.

Still... in real life we don't sit them on our desks.... maybe they should use the ashtray instead - because thats the only "trash" thing ever to sit on a desk

I agree with punishment fitting the crime but I think you put too much value on the damage the cause. The simple fact is that too few of people take the required steps to protect themselves. People have locks on their homes and cars, they don't normally allow complete strangers inside, and most people won't give out personal information to complete strangers they meet. Yet when it comes to the net it seems as if all bets are off, you never know what they will do - other than it being stupid.

  15. Overhead, look at cereals in your grocery store on Must a CD Cost $15.99? · · Score: 1

I am pretty sure that you would not see something vastly different. In fact I am not surprised how much is lost to "marketing/promotion", packaging, and overhead.

The problem many consumers have is they don't know all the variables and grossly underestimate many of them. The company I work for sells to both consumers and businesses. We have different price structures based on who we sell to. In my position I see the distribution centers cost and the prices they sell at. That cost is already significantly over the price is actually cost us to buy it from someone as we have all those costs you listed embedded as well BEFORE it gets to the store.

In fact some of the costs you listed is simply because many items before reaching retail are affected by multiple groups and each of their costs affects the final. When someone breaks it down like you have it may fail to take into account that some categories comprise multiple companies in that final cost

Do I think CDs are overpriced. Damn right, most are just overpriced simply because its one or two good songs and twelve items which are filler.

What about DVDs, let alone Blu-Ray. Thirty for a blu-ray version compared to 14.99 for the regular? Is there really that much more in cost in making it? After CDs we need to DVD/Blu-Ray. I won't even touch game cartridges. Then again I don't know all the people who have hands in the chain for these items so some may be justified

    2. Don't insult the rest by assuming anything
    3. Don't come at it from the angle that religious beliefs cloud their judgment, the approach I have seen from some anti-religious showed more ignorance than die-hard believers

The real questions, how to present this in school in an environment hostile to achievement? I think religions are the least of our problems with upcoming generations. The real problem is this idea that we cannot acknowledge the fact that some kids are genuinely better than others. Worse is getting past the idea that hard work really does pay off. I can't tell you how many kids won't put the effort forward because they are told it doesn't matter. Hell a school system which does not celebrate hard work is not going to do squat with science.

You were right in a way, keep the politicians away from science and the schools and the problem might solve itself. Politicians do as much if not more damage to the acceptance science than religious zealots... While one may not want it the other burdens it with too many requirements to overcome

Don't want to be hold accountable then don't expect our money.

I am quite sure some other company will step forward if there is money to be made and their intellectual property rights are protected. I am all for testing and certification by outside groups but I also realize that there is investment here and that needs protected first. What must come first is OUR rights, our rights to know that outside experts have certified a solution and future implementations will protect our vote. This is about creating another dependent class. About opening the doors to new lawsuits because if someone is addicted then their has to be someone causing it and if they have deep pockets the blame shifts from the one addicted to the one with the money (see cigarette suits - sorry, but we've known that truth since like, when, the 70s, yet people still act as if they were fooled - worse we let them vote?).
