I have to add, I was taught evolution and Darwin's theorey while attending a Catholic school. Later on in life I found that most people who had a problem with religion and evolution were those who weren't religious. In fact it almost seems as if certain parts of the evolution crowd want a conflict where none exist. Anything which does not totally bow down to their view is only because of religious objection.
I was getting lots of laughs watching the issue over the wording of the textbook warning that was implemented in Cobb County, it was so damn neutral it offended both sides. To me there was nothing wrong with because I am safe in my beliefs.
The four I can get my hands on doing the front seen by others, they aren't responsible for writing the services that get the data, maintain the data, or update it. Perhaps it is different at other places but what I deal with are people are merely presenting data from established systems.
Making more money? If you ask management mainframers and similar large systems only cost money. The problem is that its where the business's data resides and keeping it going and bringing it out to exploit new technologies like web presentation requires a different skill set. This is like dealing with our b2b people who claim they are the profitable side of our computing resources because our vendors pay to use our site. Too bad we buy from the same vendors.
So in a system where the web designer is closer to the data then yeah your justified in your view. However that isn't worth more to me than what the systems programmers I need are doing. Not all businesses are applicable to the web but our A/R and A/P are many times more critical than our web side because we have ways around a failure of the web side... we don't have a way around a failure in the A/P and A/R sides. If they suffer failures we are losing money, possibly facing fines, and the like.
That is mission critical to me. For Amazon their web side is mission critical because that IS their connection. For us its an added benefit it letting our customers interface with us through more automated means. However they are just as likely to call when "its important"
Maybe if your in downtown New York but outside of that, sorry web design is not nearly as difficult as many make it out to be. Some of the cumbersome tools and even client requirements can make it work - but its not like writing the back end that serves these pages or runs the business.
I can lay my hands on four "web desinger professionals" here and frankly I wouldn't let them touch anything but web pages. Web pages are not critical. What does amaze me is how long they can take to deliver certain changes, the only thing slower are C++ programmers on our pc based servers.
60K low? Yeah, if they were a C++ programmer or programmer in a real language on a mini or mainframe.
Iron Butt riders do this during a yearly event. They have a course laid out with many extra stopping points that are worth bonus points. There really isn't anyway to complete the course doing the legal limit let alone getting sufficient rest.
They do coast to coast in 50 hours which still isn't relying on doing the speed limit or getting all that much rest. There are coast to coast times two (going there and coming back)
Sounds more like a problem of over extending a platform than what is stored on there.
Once your storage needs get beyond a certain point PC based storage systems and their attendant OSes don't cut it.
On the retention side, SOX has killed us in disk space. The auditors and such are basically so damn scared or put the fear of jail into executive's heads that we have three plus year retention at moments notice. Then we have it on tape as well.
In this day of oppresive government regulation your just going to have to deal with ridiculous amounts of e-mail and stop worrying about if its all valid. It is not for you to decide, its up to the corporate lawyers and such what has to retained. If your pubically owned your just going to have to buy the storage - and get real systems to manage it with.
If not something I can select then please include that version. For some reason I like the version of the film I saw first, the voice over to me put me in the mood. Very 50s like and that is what I best remember. I actually never liked subsequent releases simply because of that feature being missing. Yes I know the arguments against but we are irrational beings and well...
There are many people more deserving of the award who actually work towards peace, most at the risk of their lives. However I seriously doubt the Nobel committee would dare cross China or even some Islamic factions to award these types of people.
Couldn't this have been rewarded in a science category or were they afraid that that category would get mocked for what the award is about?
and there are many scholars who think the word was murder and not kill. That would make much more sense considering the propensity for putting one's enemies to the sword.
As such Halo would in shape or form be against the 10 commandments
While I think the movies are good I don't think they are exactly Tolkien. Its more like Peter Jackson's LOTR instead of Tolkien. A few liberties were taken but for the most part they didn't damage the story. Sure you will find a few Tolkien fanatics who can recite a dozen if not hundred changes/errors/omissions but these are the same types that would not be please unless even the dialog matched word for word... and still they would find something amiss!
As for the whole part of "between the hobbit and LOTR" - uh... whats he working for? Turbine's LOTRO?
I use it to find out about some fad I didn't know about that my boss has suddenly decided is our next direction. Unfortunately too many of these new fangled business ideas he either finds in magazines or the last consultant to walk in his office rarely have wiki entries, however when they do its usually bad
Before the update process took effect when the user plugged their phone into its cradle was any warning given?
If not then I think this guy may have a case. Combined with some comments from Steve Jobs about not allowing this or that and looking to prevent it he may have enough to get a jury to find against Apple.
I said it before and said it again. The cell phone market isn't the iPod market, its not the Mac market. Its the cell phone market and people have different expectations and Apple is trying to change a system that is well established. The question becomes, who budges? Apple or the cell phone market? Given the court system which corporations are routinely vilified for even normal and legal actions Apple will have to tread carefully
You do realize that there is a lot of money to be made in preventive medicines of which this would be one. I doubt that they could cure it but removing the need for insulin would be a major benefit to both consumer and drug companies. My mom receives her insulin via overnight shipment - the packaging weighs many multiples compared to what was shipped. If its delivered improperly someone else eats the cost... meaning you and me. If the pharms could elminate medicines that require special handling it saves them money too.
Besides, giving a choice between paying for insulin, needles, blood test kits, or just a pill I know which I would take. I'd also be thankful someone is making it then going all tinfoil over their supposed real goals of keeping me sick - sick people die and don't buy more drugs - get over that
Nothing like getting a stupidly high bandwidth bill to find out your hosting server has been hacked. Its even better when you have to fight them to prove its their fault for being hacked and not yours for being cohosted by them!
and yes they are running Linux... they apparently didn't cover all their bases and were caught by more than one known exploit and some default settings.
Just because its Linux does not make it secure, you actually have to use it correctly.
Where I work there are numerous people who work hours from home. There are those who go out of their way to let others know of "all the work they do" beyond what is called for.
There are many reasons for this, right or wrong. 1. Perceived (usually true) method for advancement, management always loves ass kissers and putting in extra hours or staying past five are common ways to show it 2. Don't believe in self. Then there are those who don't believe they do enough because of lacking. To make up for it they put in hours over what others do. For the most part I wish they wouldn't as I usually end up fixing it 3. Did I mention ass kissers? In my industry its a near requirement. Get the title of "Manager" regardless of what you do and its EXPECTED 4. People who cannot manage their time 5. People with no life. Don't under estimate their numbers. With blackberries some feel as if they have to show they are doing something 6. Blackberries. All by themselves, these insidious items and work provide laptops give employers the expectation you will work from home too
Hell, up until this year we were REQUIRED to work 42.5 hours a week. It was written in stone.
People bury themselves under mortgages, hideous monthlies, and cc bills. (monthlies == phone bills, cable, dsl, satellite, lawn care) and waste money on coffee shops, eating lunch out every day (many times with management) and trying to keep up with the Jones. Also factor in the fear of having to change your job. Its a big fear most don't want to go through as many lack the confidence they could get another job that pays well.
So you may see it as pathetic but its part of business that many accept and perpetuate.
To stay on the bleeding edge they need better options, but for many games out there the games will play just fine at 1024x768, some cases higher. Hell, you can run 5 copies of WOW on my 2.16 C2D iMac;)
I think Apple as a whole is too distracted by trying to do too many things at once. You know that the iPhone had to take a lot of focus to pull off. Yes while they talk about increasing Mac marketshare I don't think its their bread and butter anymore and probably no where near the direction they will go and stay. In other words, Macs are here until they become #3 or lower in the revenue chain.
What would I like?
A headless machine which can accept an Apple approved video card in PCI format. Perhaps a slightly thicker iTV with the card mounted horizontally. The problem is, Macs are generally more stable simply because you cannot add any card you want, let alone the horrible drivers some bring.
Be realistic in your game choices and a Mac will do just fine. Yeah they won't run the latest texture hog as 2536x1234 or what not but in many cases they do just fine with 1024x768 or close.
The only thing I could never figure was the choice of cards in the new aluminium iMacs, major step backwards in performance versus the 7600GT option (which is in my iMac)
They are selling an iphone, a way of thinking, an idea. The problem is, the cellphone market really doesn't give a shit. Apple hasn't learned that. The question becomes, who budges first? Apple or the cell phone market?
I use a BT headset for Skype and Vent. I have tried it on both my iMac and my Laptop, the laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite. Simply put, I never use BT on my iMac any more unless I want to be "tethered" to the machine as if with a cord.
Using the mac it got static from as little as 5 feet from the machine and it would go "choppy" on occasion even while sitting at the machine. My laptop meanwhile will let me get nearly across the house to the back patio before it goes to static. My laptop has also not lost communication with the BT headset.
No matter how large they are they are not on the same scale as Philly or SanFran. St. Cloud covers only the 15 square miles of the city. It is on a different scale than what the other two cities proposed, let alone the fact that the archietecture of the buildings is significantly different.
College campuses can also easily curtain competition with their wi-fi where as pointed out in the article competition already exists, let alone good service, or existing offerings in major cities.
I would love a wi-fi style connection where I live, but the types of solutions being proposed don't work well outside of contained areas. Get out into the country and we are reliant on phone companies, cable, and worst case scenario we are on satellite. Now the newer wi-fi technologies look really good.
Work with the private companies that own cell towers and the like, the utilities who own the poles, and it might be feasible to use this to "wire" the country with the government's backing. I certainly don't want the government to manage it, but backing it is great idea. Basically the failed attempts did so because they tried on someone else's dime and that dime wasn't sufficient (let alone why Earthlink? They were struggling before this!)
I am still waiting for the day when the only "cable" coming into my house is for electricity, even that I would love to get rid of if zoning would permit solar panels.
however a local lib trash rag that is freely distributed set out to trash that idea saying that the power that the plant generates should not be created and that conservation should be enforced instead.
While conservation is indeed a nice idea the fact remains that with an ever increasing population our energy needs will go up. Combine expanded nuclear power plants, new energy sources; wind & solar; and conservation, and we should be much better off.
The long term keys also involve have governments pass laws, perhaps on the Federal level, that prevent localities and HOAs from blocking installation of solar panels. Right now I cannot do so because its not permitted - I am not in any mcmansion or such, just a standard subdivision. None of the neighboring ones I know of permit and the one city area clamped down on someone in town from doing so by beating them over the head with zoning and then historical protection crap when the zoning got whacked. This would need to be something similar for what was done for Satellite and also short wave.
We can still do a lot in our own homes to reduce our usage and encourage friends to do the same. From CFLs to better insulation and door and window seals. Plugging external wall sockets with child protection caps also conserves energy from wind leakage. Running your AC no lower tha 78 when home and keeping at 80+ when not. Loads of ways to reduce your needs, while your friends may laugh I figure they will change once you start telling them how little you spend on electricity:)
It was never meant to be a permanent station, let alone a long lived one. One of the primary reasons it has been around so long is because Shuttle accidents prevented it from getting built sooner.
I have to add, I was taught evolution and Darwin's theorey while attending a Catholic school. you missed the primary issue I raised.

I trust paid reviewers as much as I trust a politician... which ain't saying much
