The words "backticks" and "time-critical" cannot seriously appear in the same sentence if you"'re talking about CGI. Using backticks will spawn a new process, a costly operation that you want to avoid if you're really concerned with performance.
If you actually have code that runs faster in C than Perl, then write a XS wrapper for it.
Hey, it's even got some things better than SlashDot: from here it's faster. It has no ads. On their FAQ page they tell you to send them an email if you spot a typo (imagine Hemos doing that?).
Soon you'll have to register your domain name in every country in the world, in a dozen languages and in all the TLD's to have a quiet life.
Some companies are already doing just that. Just browse some of the more obscure TLD's and you'll find them. Among the most prominent: critical path, the church of scientology, and our own beloved NSI.
Sending emails to NSI is no use. It never works. The only way to have them fix things is to call them on the phone. You get to stay on hold for a half hour (great for overseas calls), but in the end you get an operator who will fix things. It's happened to me a few times, and phoning them has always resulted in an immediate fix.
Why should we be warned about the author's view on the GPL? This is offtopic IMHO. What's wrong with being against the GPL? What does that have to do with DefCon anyway?
I think Slashdotters' crusade against anti-GPL is also beyond reason.
This is because the only answer to that is that most unix-like OSes are similarly stable. There are lots of high-trafic sites that use *BSD, lots that use Linux, lots that use Solaris. Therefore this stupid religious war will never end, because no way can either followers prove anything against each other.
This is really bullshit. If your IT managers make decisions based solely on SlashDot comments, then they deserve to run NT. I'm not saying Slashdot comments are insightful, but that basing a business decision on a bunch of childish posts is just as stupid as the posts themselves. (hint: download or purchase a distribution of the OS, install it, run some apps, make a judgement for yourself).
Isn't PERL the Practical Extraction and Report Language? Yes... it's also the Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister, now you know why SlashDot is written in Perl:-)
was, I guess: 404 not found
Script kiddies don't find exploits. It just takes one guy to find an exploit, and publish it, for the remaining thousands to use it.
if slashdot was called karma72.com, we'd all be
used to it and it would be just as successfull.
A well-known author of fine Perl books has nothing more insightful to offer than his eternal rant about a stupid spelling issue.
No, the compiler will display his mistakes in a neutral language, not in an agressive arrogant manner like yours.
Just store it someplace, one day your 8 year old son will find it and he'll know what to do with it.
A firewall running sendmail 4.x? Man, you're funny!
That's a pretty stupid way to pick an OS. I use both FreeBSD and Linux, and when I'm sitting at the console I see no bigots, just cool OSes.
Grow up!

Oh, man, this isn't flamebait, it's funny.
Some moderator with a moderate sense of humor please moderate this post up!

That same FAQ page gives credit to SlashDot, BTW.

... and you're a human! Just imagine what the universal translator machine would have made of it!

The previous post is _not_ offtopic! It's just, er, sparse.
Moderators sometimes suck.
Not quite imaginary: you might want to check this article
As much as I like Apache, I doubt their license will be acceptable as "free software" by FSF's definition. 'Tis really a shame, though...
I really don't like to have holes in my nose, I like it the way it is.
Ah, most people have holes in their nose "built-in", that's why they can do coke. What nose distro are you using?
'cause it's an anonymous post that hasn't been moderated. Anonymous posts start at 0, others start at 1
If you use neither BSD nor Linux, then you don't know what you're talking about. You're just spreading the FUD you've read elsewhere.

He even mentioned adding an 'oriental' technician. You do know thats a no-no right? Asian is the appropiate term. Not a good start in PC land.
He he... actually oriental is not necessarily Asian, could be Arabic, Turkish, Kasakh, Kurdish, etc.
I for one am happy if he doesn't go with that PC bullshit.
