  1. Creative dxr2 on DVD CCA Emergency Hearing to seal DeCSS · · Score: 2

More companies should take an example from Creative and their drivers for dxr2 (regardless of the fact that they didn't write them themselves, they still provide them on their website and provide information on how to use them) As I'm typing this, I'm watching Pink Floyd's The Wall in a window under Linux, and my roommate is watching it on the TV in the other room through the S-Video out. It works perfectly, except for the fact that menus don't work. I just ran across the link to the drivers last night, downloaded a devel kernel, recompiled, and everything worked perfectly. The image looks better than it does under Windows, as well (why, I don't know, but it does noticeably)

The drivers are even open sourced... the only binary needed is an image of something, I forget what. (I was drunk last night when I set this up :-)

If anybody's wondering, the URL is http://opensource.creative.com. The command line program works decently (but you have to know the number of the .VOB file you want to play.... but once you start it, it plays through the whole movie uninterrupted) There's a GNOME player (gdxr2 or something like that) but it sucks - it's extremely buggy. I may write a GNOME DVD player (as soon as I get bored with working on PowerShell... hehehehe shameless plug :-)

  5. Why they don't give out the instruction set on UPDATED: Transmeta's Crusoe Unveiled · · Score: 1

Jesus people, quit bitching about something that you don't know anything about. Transmeta won't open the instruction set for the Crusoe because they want to have the ability to change it from CPU to CPU. That way they don't end up building up tons of obsolete crap (like Intel from the 8086 days) They can start each processor with a fresh design, and the only software that needs to be ported is the Code Morpher thing. It's not an anti-OSS thing like you people are making it out to be. Hell, if they were doing that, Linus probably wouldn't be working for them.

It's for the same reason that they don't give the information needed for random people to write morphers - they would end up with things like "SPARC morpher, only for the XXYYY version of the Crusoe." It makes sense for them to only let people write software for the other CPUs and have it run emulated (especially since there seems to be such a small loss in speed) They want the freedom to design each new chip as they see fit without building up tons of backwards-compatibility crap, the lack of which is exactly what allows the Crusoe to run so cool and use a such a little amount of power (as well as make the chip cost so little to make)

Sorry if this post doesn't make sense or rambles, I haven't slept in 2 days. But I'm sure you can get the main idea.

I know I'll burn in hell for dissing the Almighty Sony...but I'd rather eat a dog turd than buy another one of their monitors. They seem to be specially designed to die precisely 30 seconds after the warranty has expired (as with three of the four Sony's I've owned...and I've heard of similar experiences from others).

Regarding the short lives of Sony monitors, here's what I've discovered (I have a Sony Trinitron, 17", that's busted) These things fail frequently, but 99% of the time the cause of failure is the little thing inside which checks to see if the current in the monitor is too high (at which point the tube would start emitting dangerous amounts of radiation) This part dies and thinks the current level is ALWAYS too high, so it doesn't let the monitor power on. It's a $30 part and easy enough to replace yourself (although that would void the warranty).

No way, dude... MiniDiscs are the shit. I recently bought one (Sharp's most expensive model sold at Best Buy) and it's great... sounds great, looks cool, and you can name tracks, split tracks, and everything else you'd need. It was only $200 (you couldn't get a portable mp3 player for *too* much less than that, and then only one that has 64mb of RAM [which would hold 1/2 the music that a MiniDisc holds if you used a decent bitrate of mp3]) MiniDiscs themselves are only ~2 bucks a pop if you buy a 10-pack (again, at Best Buy.)

You can record with a standard stereo headphone-plug type input or an optical cable from a digital source. I record using a splitter->RCA from my computer to my stereo, then RCA out from my stereo to a converter to a headphone plug and then into my MD player. I get absolutely no noticeable noise with this setup and the sound is perfect (and I have a pretty good ear for this type of thing) It even sounds damn good from an mp3, the compression in the MiniDisc doesn't fuck with mp3's compression too badly.

Sorry to go off on this rant, but I think that everybody who likes portable music should have one of these babies instead of a portable mp3 player, since they seem so much more practical to me (and to switch songs, you don't have to hook it back up to your computer, just pop in another disc)

The GPL allows forking, but it also implicitly prevents it, because any forks must also be released under the GPL. If the new features in the forked version are better than the original, there's nothing preventing the author of the original version from stealing those changes an integrating them back into his version. Meanwhile, he's been doing development, so now he has his changes PLUS the other guy's changes, and he comes out on top.

To answer your other question about being able to create a commercial, closed source version of the authors need to pay the bills: the GPL allows this as well (as does any other license) The original author of the program retains the copyright to the code and can re-release it at any time under any license he wants. What the GPL prevents is OTHER people stealing GPL'ed code and selling it as a commercial, closed source program.
