The problem is that most states and the federal govt do not get enough money from gas taxes to fund roads, bridges and other transport infrastructure. Apparantly just increasing the gas tax (while gas prices are low) is not politically possible.
"It's like how a light beam can have an edge, but it doesn't mean there isn't anything in the shadow."
In this case the shadow is in front of the pulse of light that was the big bang. We will never be able to see further than that since it is moving away at the speed of light. Unless we can invent a (much) faster than light drive, and go chase it down.
will a 3d printed (presumably plastic) jet engine last?
Wake me when they have 3d printers that print in Titanium
I'm guessing they will have 3d printers that work in soft metals like gold and silver before too long of course the cartidges will cost both arms and both legs...
CO2 levels started increasing during the industrial revolution when we started burning coal for fuel instead of wood. This was long before the UN or even the League of Nations
Nut an increase in greenhouse gas is a problem which you msy hsve noticed if you live in the west (drought)
"every time you exhale, you're polluting the air."
The amount is way less howevere.
Also cars mostly run on fossil fuel that has been in the ground for millions of years. Humans are fueled by plants or animal protein that has recently been carbon in the atmosphere. Its not an addition to the amount of carbon that is around.

I think Redbull know something about sport, they have a Formula 1 team that used to be the champion (although now they get beaten by their junior team *Toro Rosso')
"Verifying phenomena like volcanism on an exoplanet is the kind of thing we would be able to do if astronomers only had larger telescopes. "
Speaking of large volcanoes, that would be a good place to put a large telescope, but I guess the people that live there don't want us looking for other volcanoes and stuff

this is obviously some strange usage of the word "stable" that I wasn't previously aware of.

"To make supersonic flight possible over sea or over land, the cost must come down"
I think you are missing the word 'commercial' in that statement.
For military flight, cost isn't such a big issue.

I am not sure what is 'newsworthy' about this.
What about battery failure? I have only had my Galaxy Note 3 for two and a half years so it hasn't happened yet

"A little over 300 years ago, a supernova ...exploded."
If it exploded 300 years ago or so then for us to know about it, it must have been within 300 light years of us, thtats a bit close for my liking
