  4. How different is the UI really.. on Why Valve Wants To Port Games To Linux: Because Windows 8 Is a Catastrophe · · Score: 2

I really wish people would look objectively at windows 8 and stop just repeating the things others have said.

Everyone keeps saying it's enormously different, but here's the truth, other than a ton of reported efficiency improvements under the covers, there's one change that everyone is up in arms about:
The start menu was replaced. Oooo scaarrry... That's the only UI change. Just one, and somehow people act like this OS is so far removed from windows as we know it.

Here's the truth: If you don't think someone is going to have a program out that behaves identical to the current start menu right when windows 8 comes out, you're fooling yourself. It will probably even be better as it will likely be open source and community driven giving even greater customization if you want. Moreover, half of you play around in different window managers whenever you feel like which causes major UI changes. So slashdotters are the last ones that should be griping. Heck, by creating a simple folder menu on your task bar that points to your desktop or wherever else you keep your shortcuts (there's probably still a start menu folder you could just point it at) you can just recreate the same behavior you're used to.

Now the other side of the truth: For non-technical folks like us who aren't extremely tied to their start menu and probably find the menu driven behavior less preferable to their desktop's behavior for choosing items (as icon driven interfaces have by apple been shown to be more usable by the masses), the new start menu is likely quite preferable.

Given that technical folks like us will adjust almost immediately, and chances are the general population will by my wager like the new behavior more (so long as they can avoid their perceptions being tainted by the constant microsoft-is-for-idiots meme), I am going to go out on a limb and say Windows 8 will probably be an extremely successful operating system. There is now one caveat however; there are a fairly significant amount of changes under the covers I am to understand, so as long as they haven't compromised compatibility and stability, I think they'll be in great standing. I suppose only other caveat: The javascript on the desktop as applications approach may result in some horrible programs written for windows 8 that taints people's view of the overall OS.

Now quit spewing what everyone (including me) says, and go read about/try windows 8 yourselves. And longer than just opening the start menu to shout "NO!" and uninstalling it like so many windows->linux converts do. As for the claims of "Shill!", good for you; you are capable of identifying all somewhat positive statements about a thing as being clearly false marketing. Hypocrite, you probably said something good about yourself once. Sucker.

Unless you count hippie communes, the ones that aren't run by some freaky weird leader who takes 6 wives may actually be the closest thing to an implementation of communism from the top down. Problem with implementing it in large scale is it takes a capitalistic cannibalistic competitiveness to become a singular leader of a great many people, so the only way to get in the position to implement large scale communism would be by being a completely self centered sociopathic control freak, which is obviously the antithesis of communism. "the only way to further increase profits"

This is the problem right here- greed. Profit won't do, continuous streams of it even, no no. People need to continuously increase the size of the profit stream.

There are really 2 causes to when businesses do this, A) _GREEDY_ leaders, and I'm not saying this is common, I'm saying this is when you have a leader who is either truly without principles or willing to scrap them for money. I honestly don't think this is the norm in people- most people I meet day to day are actually well intentioned. B) The far more common reason- INVESTORS. Being a public company means you have a fiduciary responsibility to try and continually increase profits to continually increase desirability of your stock and value of it to your end investors.

I am merely bringing this up to state: Your wrong in claiming this is the completely natural course of action that always happens, rather there are a great many private companies who have maintained steady profit streams with leaders not willing to compromise their principles merely to increase the profits which are already more than ample. These many companies just don't make the news, but I'm sure lots of you out there have worked for one before where the idea of exploiting someone would never enter the thought process in day to day business.

So the big networks need to get the effing picture on this one, honestly- hulu/netflix are the new distribution channels. The networks are going to partner up or die. It comes down to one simple motivator: Time. People are too busy to carve out slots in their week dictated by the networks schedules, and netflix/hulu allows them to enjoy the content they want without them having to work their schedules around some national networks designs. Simple as that, hulu/netflix/etc all provide a service network broadcasts will simply never be able to do, and valuable enough to consumers that they will all eventually move on to this. Short of the networks providing the DVRs to everyone's home.

I would even argue that consumers by and large could give 2 shits about commercials, hulu has them and they're rolling in the dough. People are happy to sit through commercials, they get the DVR's to watch when they want, the commercial skipping garb is just bonus.

The cable providers are going about this in completely the wrong way, they think improving their internet infrastructure to allow everyone to be their customers for access to hulu/netflix/etc is so expensive compared to improving their tv infrastructure, so they're actively working to lock people into the tv infrastructure. It's a higher profit margin part of their business, but they're ignorant of the fact that no matter how much they try to lock people in, the majority of people will be using internet streaming services for their entertainment in 10 years time.

They're fighting it because it's not the most profitable portion of their business, they should be actively working to do what they can to make it a higher margin part because they can't stop consumers from choosing the clearly better products hulu/netflix/etc provide. In the same vein the networks need to start making their alliances with streaming providers immediately or else they'll be making crappy shows for pennies in 10 years while someone else will fill the void of producing quality content for the streaming providers.
