Whenever people proclaim that Slashdot is being beat by Digg, they drag out the Alexa pageview stats. However, people forget that Alexa's software only runs on IE. Considering that a large number of Slashdot visitors use browsers other than IE, the Alexa stats don't accurately reflect the number of pageviews that Slashdot gets.
light users out there who would love $8/month tiered service for the 8 megs of transfer
Do you really think that they are going to lower costs for anyone? I am sure that their "silver" plan is going to cost what we already pay and if we want to do something other than check email, we'll pay for it.
The only group that is going to benefit is the internet providers.
This seems less like a move away from books and more like an example of the commercialization of Universities. Most college-bound students these days are going to college to pick up a degree, so they can get a job, and don't really care what field the degree is in. Likewise they care little about the academic qualities of their college choices. Unless a school is ranked highly by Newsweek, students are more concerned about the school's perks.
This is why facilities such as computer labs and fitness gyms recieve equal, or more, attention in Univerisity advertising than statistics on class sizes and professor quality. A large hi-tech computer lounge is a great show on a campus tour. And I am sure that there are plans to build a shop that sells plenty of student "needs" such as school-branded clothing, iPods, cell phones and laptops.
My alma mater gave up on education a long time ago. Now their central show piece is their "Freshman Year Center," a giant computer lab/lounge, and new book store which devotes little floor space to books. They even have a makeup counter!
The next step is replacing those cranky, money-grubbing professors. Some classes are already taught on the internet in major Universities.
There was a guy in our dorm that was the victim of many practical jokes. Two practical jokes involved his computer. In one instance aone of the guys underclocked his CPU so that is ran at around 33MHz. He could understand why it took forever to do anything. Finally someone was nice enought to fix it for him. The other practical joke was pulled on him by his roommate. He put a carton of left over chinese food inside his case and left for a week vacation. After a couple days there a foul smell emanating from his computer. Eventually no one could stand being in his room. When his roommate returned he was forced to fix the problem.
Is this 91% of the supposed 52% that goes to the label and artist? (40% for label and 12% for artist) Or just the 91% of the 12% cut? This is a difference of either 47 cents or 11 cents per song.
I agree that the GOVERNMENT has only our best interest in mind. However the government is not a friendly, father figure like a diety. Many people are under the impression that because of what our country (and government) stands for is good, the government can only do good.
Unfortunately the government is not a friendly, caretaker. The government is composed of people and people can be evil. It is men (and women) that will have access to our information via the PATRIOT act. It is these people that I believe have no right to my private information.
In a perfect world this would not be a problem. However in a perfect world, we would not have terrorists, governmental scandals, or war.
I do not oppose the PATRIOT act because I am a criminal or have something to hide. I oppose the PATRIOT act becuase I am NOT a criminal and have the right to be treated as such.
RH8 does have some beautiful fonts. But are most linux users concerned with fonts. I guess this is where linux is divided among those who like eyecandy and those who don't.
The former probably also thinks OSX is the coolest.
If you have the desk space, there isn't any great advantage to getting an LCD. I admit they are damn cool, but I can't rationalize paying the same price for a 15" (lcd) that I paid for my 21" (crt). And it's a nice Hitachi flat CRT.
If you have the bucks (I don't) then why not get one, or two, or three! (you too can be a hollywood-hacker)
Basically LCDs are for people with too much money. If I had too much money I'd get 40" plasma screen and split it into two frames and use that as my monitor[s].
This is probably why Dell no longer sells consumer computers with CRTs.
I never said anything about them not deserving high salaries. I think they should be paid well. I am just tired of them complaining about not being paid enough.
It was an analogy to the movie producer (who probably nets millions a year) complaining about low movie profits.
- you can see the movie before TV and friends ruin the plot by telling you too much - the sound system is much better (then most of us have) - the screen is much bigger (than most of us have) - the new theaters with big seats with headrests that rock are very comfortable
Who buys popcorn anyway? It's just a ploy to make us buy more drinks. I always sneak in some food I bought at 7-11.
Is that against the DMCA or the implied EULA I agree to when purchasing tickets?:)
This is like when I hear doctors complaining about the state of medicine and how little they are making. I feel really sorry for them. Some doctors are being paid as little as 100k a year! (sarcasm)
This guy is just sad that every movie he makes doesn't have "titanic" box office sales. Hollywood needs to make good films that don't cost hundreds of millions. One example, _K-19: Widiowmaker_ cost over $120 million and only grossed $80 mil. However, producer and star Harrison Ford got paid around $28 mil. On the other hand _Big Fat Greek Wedding_ only cost a little over $10 million, but has grossed over $150 mil so far.
The focus groups probably predicted _K-19_ to be a success. BFGW probably did't even have focus groups.
I would like to posit that Napster actually limits music piracy. I myself can be considered a MP3 pirate. I have downloaded hundreds of gigabytes in the past 4 years. I am unscrupulous about my d/ling. I will not claim to only d/l stuff I own or d/l to just test out an artist before I buy. I d/l to keep. If I like it a lot, I burn the music to CD so I can listen to it in my car, etc.
My favorite thing to d/l is full albums. This is the best. I would go on IRC, chat to some people, find a good site (which are usually themed by musical genre) and d/l until my heart's content. If I wanted to pirate Top40 singles I could tape the radio. The full album is where the best music lies. A full hour of music.
Since the advent of Napster my available resources have decreased dramatically. The majority of Napster's content is singles. Sure this is great if you want to own "Karma Police" or "Hit Me Baby One More Time." But without listening to the full album, one misses out on songs like "Electioneering" and those hidden gems on !N'Sync's album that never made it to TRL. Few people share full albums on Napster. A full album is what one pays for when they buy the music from the retail store.
To make things worse, the largess of ftp sites that existed in the past have almost vanished. Napster has taken all of their business, so to speak. The ones that remain are consumed with making money, and require each to user to apply to various internet pyramid schemes in order to make them money. A greedy pirate is just plain dispicable.
So to sum things up: Napster is actually benefical to the recording industry in some aspects. Listeners still need to pay money if they want to buy the whole album. Due to MP3's inferiority to CDs (by a slight margin), buying a CD is still a better option if one really likes an artist's music. And with Napster's excellent promotional aspects, it is, if anything, a boon to the RIAA.

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...
Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...
Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Finally an alternative to entertaining myself in dentists' offices. No more Kung Fu!
I have a wooden desk AND a leather chair. Where's my startup? I want to get rich quick too!
Maybe I need a Dell with a LCD monitor...hmmm..

I've been looking for a summer home
Someone should trump them and get a patent for the internet. Then they could only make that company pay them royalties until they are out of business.
I never said anything about them not deserving high salaries. I think they should be paid well. I am just tired of them complaining about not being paid enough.

Go to the movies still has its merits.

Well it is no longer on Slashdot's front page.
Microsoft is getting into the heavy metals industry now? They have their hands in everything!
You could try Alexandrite. It is one of the most truly rare gems. (maybe THE most rare) And it changes colors, supposedly.
you obviously missed the sarcasm.
