What exactly do you think is legal?

I for one will never acknowledge any law that says I can't do whatever I want with my possesions in the privacy of my own home NOT hurting myself OR others directly with said item. Forget legality; think ethically.

  2. Akk dangers of Ionizers on An Affordable Air Purifier For Dusty Computer Labs? · · Score: 1

Most people don't realize that all ionized air filtration systems produce o3. o3 is not safe for humans, the government regulates how much o3 a device can emit (and they base this off of how humans react to a certain dose of o3 during the course of 24 hours) they don't look into long term health side from prolonged exposure nor do they look at the fact that a product that emits o3 has the ability to create o3 that will build up in the closed room or house. o3 is commonly referred to as ozone which can kill just about any living cells (it's like a organic cleanser).

Most people think Ozone is a good thing, well and in a case that is true: Ozone up in the atmosphere is a good thing down here on the ground though it's considered pollution.

Generally ionizers are used in areas like hospitals to disinfect the air, I think living in a closed environment with one of these things is barbaric.

2-3 hours is a good chunk of time the 5 hours she spends at preschool is an even bigger chunk. I was actually worried that she would not take to the machine and just want to watch movies for this portion of her day. I'm ecstatic she would rather interact and use her brain than sit and watch. She's in no danger of not learning her social skills, for as much as she likes her computer she LOVES to interact with other kids.

I also limit the time my daughter uses her computer as mentioned before (2-3 hours tops), she would if I let her use it for most of the day. She now only occasionally watches the movies she did as a toddler (and has seen over and over by the way) and is always jumping up and down to get to use her computer.

My opinion is I'd rather her play "Blues Clues" on her computer than to watch an episode on Television but I don't make her do either I only encourage her to do what she enjoys unless I think there is a factor of damage to consider.

The more rules you impose on your children the less creative and curious they will become. So I'd warn that not thinking through how any given 'rule' will impact on a child is negligent.

If you say to your kids you can only play reader rabbit for 1/2 an hour a day what are you saying to them? At this age they are learning about everything around them (though by seven they have a pretty good grasp on their world), almost every activity is learning to them even if they don't realize it and they don't see the line between playing and learning, but they do recognize doing what they want to and what you want them to do, and if what you want them to do is learn and that is not what they want to do they will end up resenting learning type behaviors and seek play instead. Showing encouragement is better than showing ultimate authority.

  4. My kid loves her computer on Alan Kay Interview: Computing Past and Future · · Score: 5, Insightful

My child loves her computer; she is 3 1/2 and uses it for 2-3 hours everyday. It has replaced the time in her day where she would usually sit and watch a Disney movie or some other such, now she is challenging her mind instead of taking backseat. Kids and computers do mix.

On the plus side at preschool there are two computers that the kids use/watch other kids use, exposure seems to be key.

"My pet peeve is when sites hype and announce new-and-improved sites, and then they come out and they are simply a gigantic flash application."

Flash designers pushed web desgn into the 21st century. Html was not originally designed to handle the kinds of things many people want to do with their site.

I'm a professional web developer, I am not aligned with any particular technology choice Microsoft or other. I use what works, Netscape contains far more buggy behaviors than IE, specifically in the era of 4.0 browsers. The developers noticed this and in turn stopped suggesting Netscape, which in turn helped wane the user base I will agree that Microsoft had a hand in this as well but the people ultimately still choose their browser. Just because someone serves you goat testicles doesn't mean you have to eat it. They choose of their own free will not to support a different technology.

I started an avid supporter of Netscape and hating IE, after developing for a couple of years I changed my opinion based on learned behavior. Sorry if this is unsavory to you but if your hammer was so awkward to wield that it hurt you every time you used it you'd get tired of it and find a new one, the same is true of browsers. Don't forget it is just a tool.

The moment something works better for the developers is the moment the microsoft browser monopoly ends.

But flash will still be there :P It behaves correctly under NS and IE. If you think about it that's one more reason it has support from developers, oh and it is capable of some pretty snazzy stuff.

Just my opinion you don't have to like it.
