Since it is only Starbcuks coffee that remains a problem, then, I would have thought the solution simple: Ban employees from buying their coffee at Starbucks. If its Starbucks coffee spills that are likely to wipe the records out, Just Say No! Install a Nestle coffee machine and all will be well...
They are usually strong enough to put the government off indefinitely or are willing to pay a small fine to make a large profit.
... or strong to enough to simply fuck off to another country with (*cough*) friendlier laws.
I worked for several months in the Swiss canton of Zug. Very interesting place! Just wandering around the streets and looking at the discreet brass nameplates beside the doors of so many office buildings... "World Headquarters of XYZ Corp.", "World Headquarter of ABC Inc.", etc., etc. Those offices all contain exactly 3 people - an office manager, a secretary and a cleaning lady: because Swiss federal law requires that they employ at least 3 Swiss citizens. And that's it!
Let's not get into the Extremely Senior Apartheid Sanctions Busters, the Oil Brokers, Arms Brokers and Zimbabwean Dictators's Benevolent Funds get located in Zug Canton. Can't think why...
Actually, no! It's not god's (or God's) name. The Judeo-Islamo-Christian god's name is JHVH -- however you want to pronounce that. The noun "god" is just a reference to the claimed-to-be one-and-only God And Creator Of All The Universe. (Please note that preceding capitalisation is purely in the interests of keeping the Grammar Nazis happy.) Some other god might have a different name. "Tyr", say, "Freia". And then they certainly should be capitalised, but the term "god"... no.
That's if you believe any of that crap, anyway.
OT: Has the FSM made claim to any name (or Name) as far as anyone knows?
Hopefully this bill makes it through NZ's legislature reasonably intact. Be very sure that a huge amount of pressure will be brought to bear on legislators in the meantime.
But... if it finally does pass, Welcome To The Club, NZ!
South Africa's IP law explicitly states that software is unpatentable. Not that this stops the like of MS trying anyway... This leads to some bizarre circumstances... about 10 years ago I spent several months doing development work in Switzerland for a South African client, all because the Swiss Canton I was required to work in has (had?) particular laws around software patents that were evidently favourable to the legal prick running the company. And I was not permitted to do any of the work anywhere else. In fact I was not allowed to carry any of the laptops outside the jursidiction of this one particular Canton, and specifically forbidden from carrying any of the code, documentation or anything back home to South Africa with me. Weird shit!
And you'll find yourself with a shitload of newly free hours in the day in which you can do all sorts of stuff. Write a book. Write some free software. Learn a new language. You'll amaze yourself with just how much you can achieve in just one hour extra a day.
What's with calling it "the bottom of the world"? In space there is no "up".
Arrogant Southist assholes. Allow me to refer you to a more correct map of the planet (though I'd still prefer to see an equal-area projection used instead of Mercator's abomination.)
Yup. Did that. Only problem was that the band that caught my attention is on a label that has never been heard of by stores where I live, so the only realistic way to get hold of their music was... BitTorrent. S'ok - the band puts all their releases on the 'net anyway, generally several weeks before the official release. As a direct consequence, I now own CD copies of every album they've ever done. (Well except the latest one which hasn't been officially released yet.)
The invisible recommendation hand that worked for me was last.fm...
As someone who has been hosting with VAServ for years, now, I was one of the lucky ones! Not a scratch nor a dent... uptime still ticking along at 346 days.
VAServ have indicated their intention to move to a different v12n platform asap. No real surprise, there. It also looks like BlueSquare Data (the DC's operations arm) will be taking over at least some of the VAServ operations.
Say what you like about the choice of v12n, security, lack of defense-in-depth, etc., VAServ have kept customers fully informed, blow by blow, server by server, and kudos, too, to BlueSquare for committing significant resources to helping sort out the mess.
It's already been noted above, somewhere, but mystified me, too: Why the hell did the perpetrator just wipe out servers and not subvert them to some other, more more profitable/odious purpose? The whole attack makes very little sense, unless you assume that the attacker has the mentality of a spotty 13-year-old.
OK, so a whole bunch of stuff is funded/supported by ad-based revenue. Let's assume that enough of the rest of you start using Adblock+ and its relatives, and they all go under. (I've been using it as long as I can remember. It's occasionally a shock to use someone else's browser and realise what they have to put up with!)
So a bunch of big-ish website vanish. the real question is: who cares? Will we really, truly miss them? Or will Mom and Pop Sixpak get off their butts and start contributing content. Or will they simply ditch The IntarWeb and go back to watching TV.
You'd be insane to do a project like this with a SQL backend. Look into using a decent object database (OODBMS).

Anyone know if there's (going to be) a documentary movie of some sort? I'd call it "The Little Engine that Could". Oh wait...
rule number 1 of slashdot: ANY thread can be twisted into a bash of microsoft. no exceptions.
...and should be. no exceptions.

That's OK... whenever I read of a version control system with the command "bzr" I read it as "boozer". Dunno why...
XML. Need I say more?
My guess is they were trying to use Slashdot's submission system...
Avast! Ye Crimson Permanent swab....
Free hand job? Want my address? :-)
Naah... but send me your bank details.
Actually that's 240V 50Hz...
Why not? It works for Microsoft!

No! You're being unimaginative with your assumptions.

Win, win, either way!
Playing too much Nethack, are we?
Yes, I did.
Not only that, but
he will need to confront a culture of political infighting and leadership failures
made me think, "He should be totally at home with that, then."

Seriously!
Install the camera, but switch off its power-supply, or spray-paint the lense, or...
You get the idea. As long as their wording is so vague as to simply stipulate "install... a camera" it seems pretty simple to me.
'Course its trickier if they're more specific about the camera's operation, data connections, power-supply, etc.
