At least I am not the only person with this problem! The IRS and SSA have my birthday wrong as well. They have my SSN listed as the birth year of my sister, with my birth month and day. Once I found that out, it made filing taxes via e-File easy. I just put the information they want with my social sec #, they get their money, and I get left alone.
I just got a letter today telling me that the IRS had informed the state of Georgia about an adjustment made to my taxes, and that I now owe them (GA) an additional $1000+ due to that adjustment. Given that the tax year was 2000-2001, a hefty portion of that sum is penalties and fees.
See that little X in the top right hand corner of the dialog box? That's a close button. Presumably it would cause the dialog to close, and not send the OK event bubbling up the tree.
I do agree with you, I was not making light of someone composting, but rather that this isn't something new, and not really news for nerds. There are a myriad of websites out there that provide information for this sort of thing.
I'll grant that it is nice to see the occasional submission that doesn't relate to computers, but the only correlation I can see between this story and slashdot is that gardeners are frequently referred to as having a "green thumb", and slashdot is occasionally referred to as having an ugly "green theme".:)
I'm certainly not an innocent when it comes to downloading software, but this most certainly doesn't belong on/.
If you want to pirate software, go somewhere else. This shouldn't be a forum for a bunch of links on where to download this pre-release game. Send a damn private message if you have to. It's not like the people with a will can't find it on their own, now that they know it's out there.
Nope, nope, and nope. I haven't been in Bolivia since 98, and was in La Paz, Sorata, Chulumani and many other places, beautiful. Unless the FBI and RIAA are paying big dollars into the coffers of those in power, they'll have a hard time trying to do anything about it. Money changes hands and palms are greased quite frequently. Fuck, you've got to pay a cash fee at the airport just to get on the plane (in addition to any airport taxes you already paid with your ticket). Anyone with the slightest amount of money can do just about anything they want.
And when you put together that page that works only in mozilla and mozilla releases a patch that fixes some bugs and introduces others, are you going to tell your customers that they can't upgrade their browser because your application no longer works with it ?
And how are you going to know ? Do you ask every doctor you've ever seen where they got their doctorate ? I don't know many people that do, or even question their doctor's ability. I've been to a few that I wouldn't go back to, but not because I doubted their ability, rather that I didn't feel they were 'right' for me. if someone is good at bullshitting they'll get their doctorate one way or another. Just because someone went to an online school doesn't make them worse than someone who managed to make their way through med school with their only motivation being financial gain.
I know this was a joke, but surprisingly Chess has been included with every release of MacOS X. The first time I saw it there was in 1998 I believe. Apple had been working on MacOS X Server, and had given CNN (where I worked at the time) a pre-release copy to use for our quicktime streaming servers. Fun stuff, it's come such a long way since then.
I'm looking forward to seeing the shower again, but I wasn't expecting it this soon. My perception of time appears to have changed in the past few years.
Strangely enough though, in the case of LoTR, it really is only a teaser, because the movie itself will be just as amazing. How do I know? Just wait and see;)

Never worked? What are you talking about? Logic has been fantastic at releasing software concurrently with OS's. Their patches were always released for Mac and Wintel at the same time. Logic 5.0 has worked flawlessly on both Mac and PC for me.
This is not only good news, but great news. Pardon me for feeling gleeful that Windows users will now feel the way some of us Mac users have felt in the past. It's about time that the Windows world lost a piece of software which is important to them. Although there are still options for them such as Digidesign'sProTools and Motu's Digital Performer, at least I can bask in the schadenfreude I have knowing they've lost a fantastic application like Logic Audio.
On to something more serious now, will this acquisition be good for Apple ? Certainly they've got the majority of Logic users, but can they improve upon this product to the degree that it will cause the Windows users to switch? I'm not sure whether they can. Getting someone to switch platforms when there are other solutions available is obviously not easy. But some of these audio applications take a lot of experience to master, and it may be cheaper in the long run for someone to buy a PowerMac instead of having to learn one of the other available applications for PC.
I do hope that everyone benefits from this, and that the small audio guy who only has a PC isn't left completely out in the cold, I do realize not everyone can afford a Mac. Hopefully the existing user base will not be immediately left out in the cold when they drop PC support. There should be some modicum of respect for the users who helped make Emagic as popular as it is today.
Until now? RealBasic has been around since 1998!

Happy happy joy joy.
Just when you think you might be getting ahead.
It's always something.

People have been building compost heaps for years and years and years. How exactly is this news? Oh!!! I think I got it! A geek who went outside!

That is not required in every state, nor in every country.

I stand corrected.
How could someone possibly overlook RB? Have you seen the footprint of RB apps ? Blech. Cocoa is the way to go.

News at 10: Two of the billions of people on the planet Earth had very similar ideas.

Maybe we can slip some of these to Michael Jackson, I'm sure his family will love us for restoring him his blackness!
suggest for greping your daughter and having the results put out, erm, output to a hard disk?

Here are some of Apple's other acquisitions this year:
Prismo Graphics
Film Logic
Zayante
Nothing Real

You can get some good info on ARP poisoning/spoofing in this pdf.
And of those 2.7% that OmniWeb doesn't support, I'd be willing to wager that 80% of them are written with non-standard compliant code.
