To an already insane situation. You have to admit that the Offspring have either A) a good sense of humor or b) someone really clever (or stupid depending on how you want to look at it working for them to pull off a stunt like that. The problem lies in the fact that while Napster may not be guilty of any wrong doing (echoes of "common carrier" and IANAL go through my head) the Offspring definitely are. Selling unlicensed merchandise is clearly a crime, unfortunately the case is not so clear cut with what Napseter is doing. I wish I had some sort of clear cut answer on the whole Napster good/bad thing. It's clearly illegal under current laws but use of Napster has opened me to worlds of music that I would have never have listened too. I even spent $60 at Amazon (I know, I know) during lunch today on CDs.
Yea, sorry about that. I was trying to link to Stinkymeat but I couldn't remember the address offhand. But you can't dispute that the Stile project is a wonderful example of diversity on the Internet
Everyone is always saying that America is "The King" of the internet (or some words to that effect), maybe if more countries start something like this program that won't be the case anymore. A little more diversity on the Internet wouldn't be a bad thing. Oh yea, stile project doesn't count.
Do I see this happening in more developed Western nations? No, for the same reason that the DMCA and the UTICA bills were passed - the almighty bottom line. There is no way that America or any other country with a signifigantly developed economy would implement something of this scale. But then again do we really need "Internet Welfare"? I don't think so, but that's another story for another day.
Hey man, normally I would agree with you. I mean who really cares about a 4 bit color difference in a product that most of us don't (and will never) own? But hey, Its Sunday night and not much else is happening in the world (Hopefully most everyone here is talking about the good X-Files Ep tonite, but I digress). I'm just glad to have something to read before I go to bed.
Geeze, I tried for like 4 hours to access the MSFT story and all it would do was timeout on me. I assumed that the/. servers could handle a load like that (especially the new ones). Could it have been the ever fearful DDOS? I certainly hope not. Although if one could trace that back to Redmond I truely wouldn't be surprised. Well maybe. They can't be that stupid could they?
Wrong. Pages get paid two ways (probably more but that's another story for another day), through impressions and clickthroughs. Every time you load a Slashdot page they (andover/slashdot) makes money. Not a ton of money mind you but obviously enough to make it worthwile.
If you want clarity you shouldn't get Bose speakers (especially the Sat systems). Here is a link to the Bose FAQ. Sorry about the google cache link but I think the old one is down
Some quick points about the Sat systems: 1) Since the Sats have only one speaker element that is to big to form defined high end sounds and to small to produce any real bass. All you get is a muddled midrange sound. 2) The "Bass box" or whatever the hell they call it is NOT a subwoofer. It contains a couple of 5.5" drivers. Nothing big enough to move any sort of air around.
Again FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT BY BOSE SPEAKERS!

Welcome to a new era of junk mail people. Ultimately that is what this will result in. Okay it might be a little more severe than that, but what I really think will come of this is that a few more of us might be getting doubles of the edmund scientific cataloge.
Okay, bad joke. This is serious. And I really wonder how the opt out link that they provide is used. Do you have to opt out for every IP address that you have? I opted out from my work IP but now I'm at home. Does that mean that evey thing I do from here they can track? What about people with dial-up connections? They don't have a static IP. Does this mean that they can't opt out at all? I'm kinda scared of the implications of this. For me I hope that it just means that I'll get more spam on my hotmail account. But still......
Well that was one of the points that I left out 'cause I had to go back to work (I'm done working for the day now. Still at the office, but done working). Anyway if we are a net importer of oil that is an even bigger reason for the government to suppress CF. What do you think would happen to most of the countries in the middle east if CF replaced the need for oil as a fuel (Still need it for lots of other stuff though)? I don't think they'd be very pleased about that. Add in the unstability of the area + our gvt's past (current) terrorism paranoia and it makes sense that we should continue to import our oil from the OPEC countries no matter what. Additionally even if we are a net importer of oil the expenditure put forth still helps our economy in some way (Any help here? I slept through Macro). I think it's the "velocity of the dollar" or something like that (i.e. the faster the money is spent the better).
Not the best example, but I have to support my paranoid delusions somehow.
Okay this might be a product of me watching to many X-Files and just generally being a skeptical guy, but does anyone else here think that the suppression of cold fusion is some sort of government plot? I know I'm probably rehashing this from somewhere else but think about it. If cold fusion were (allowed) to exist think of the changes that would go on. Power companies wouldn't be needed as much because every house/building would have its own mini-fusion generator to keep the power on. That leads to less oil and coal use. Which leads to trade deficts and all that blah-blah. Not to mention the complete distruction of lots of huge mega-corporations (Mobile-Exxon anyone?). I'm sure there are other reasons but I've got to get to work.
I'm actually surprised that Fleichmann & Pons are still alive and haven't died in some sketchy "Hunting accident" or something
Or is Katz just getting lazy? I'm not ususally one to poo-poo (what am I, twelve?) but it seems that he just threw this up there without any rhyme or reason. Open source reviewing? I believe that is called a "discussion" Mr. Katz. Perhaps you've heard of it.

Didn't the government take away their monopoly power? Didn't they grant other orginazations the right to give out.com,.net & other domains. I thought that I read that somewhere a while ago. What happened?
To everyone that thinks that companys don't look at registration cards, think again. Those cards cost money. The bulk rate postage costs money. Mailroom workers cost money. Why would they spend all this money if they were going to ignore the cards. Sure they use the data you give them for marketing and stuff, but do a couple of pieces of junk mail really matter that much? Just don't give them your phone number (If I ever get my hands on those bastards at Interplay...). Besides, i work in advertising and sometimes I have to deal with the results of these registration cards.
Even if they don't share the info with other companies (which I'm sure they don't) they will still realize that there is a Linux market out there and probably be more supportive in the future. Then other companies will notice that someone is making money off of the Linux market. Then they will start supporting it. It's a nice little circle.
I don't know if I'd go that far. Acutally I think that reasonable QIII performance is within the reach of the average user. One can get a decent Athlon box with a good 3d accelerator for less than $1500 (I should know, just got one last week).
As for the depth of human color perception I have to plead ignorance. But why would everyone be making such a big deal about 32bit color if no one could see the difference? Would the difference between 16bit (normal/decent video card output) vs. 24bit (What you claim as human's color threshold) really be all that great? Hey I don't even enable 32bit color when I play QIII since I'm one of those "go fast and look ugly" type of players. When I'm playing hardcore I'd rather have the framerate than the eye candy. But when it comes time to show what the new machine can do the eye candy can really impress.
Have you seen the game running in its full high res 32bit color glory? It is absoulutely incredible, best looking computer game I've ever seen(agruably better than Soul Caliber on Dreamcast but that is another discussion for another day). Sure you need a pimped out machine to play it like that, but it will also play on lesser machines. I used to play the demo on my P200 with a voodoo1. Sure it didn't look as pretty as with a newer machine, but I could play it and get a decent framerate. That is the beauty of the Quake games - their flexibility when it comes to graphics/system options. It rewards the gamer that just spent $3000 on their Athlon 700 GeForce box, but someone else with a mildly upgraded three year old machine (like me) can still play the game. At least Quake engine games, Unreal engine games are another story.

Anyone knows me personally knows that I really don't like Apple as a company or Steve Jobs. Mainly because of marketing tactics (Yea I know Microsoft's just as bad or even worse. That's not my point) & Job's swarmy used car salesman demeanor. I have no problems with the hardware and even occasionally enjoy fooling around with Macs just to see what else is out there.
