Yes, that's possible. But 10,000 monkeys banging on typewrites *could* have come up with Shakespear, and it didn't happen.

I could see it being feasible if the code was simply a couple of lines wrong, but writing entire device drivers that look that much alike is going to be too far against odds.

Let's have a little perspective check here. If using solid, uncompromised encryption becomes illegal, how does this stop terrorists from using it? Gee, I guess terrorists best upgrade so the government has a backdoor to their communication. They wouldn't want to do anything illegal, now would they?

  5. XP effects? on Java To Overtake C/C++ in 2002 · · Score: 2, Redundant

There was news that Windows XP will not ship with any native support for Java. Certainly, a user could add Java support him/herself, but how many users are going to take initiative to do so?

With hundreds of thousands of copies of an OS that won't do Java, that will have a very deep impact on developers. It doesn't do much good to make software that nobody can run.

Granted, many a Java developer's projects are meant for *nix environments, which is just one more pro for the side of good. But I wonder how XPs lack of Java support will affect the number of Java developers.

Or all the homosexuals, who somehow find straight, toothless, fat midwesterners strangely attractive?
Now this comment is truly disturbing. For a reason I don't suppose I'll ever comprehend, you assume that since I'm from Indiana, you can put down homosexuality in an attempt to get a rise from me. If you'd really done your homework, you'd find the city I am from boasts the highest percentage of GLBTs in this part of the country, second only to a California city. Frankly, I'm apauled you'd have the indecency to degrade people for the sake of rebutting a simple joke. Shame.

I think it's more a question of sysadmin ethics. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Sure, root can rea d your e-mail, but what purpose does it serve?

Consider this. The only initiative that a hosting company could have to remove someone else's content would be to protect the integrity of the system. A virus could be removed if it could spread to the system. Spam accounts can be removed because it could cause them to be blacklisted which would interupt normal e-mail flow. Can someone provide a case for mp3's? Even more specifically, legal mp3's? What if mp3's weren't even the target; if a web company is removing anything ending in .zip because it could contain pirated software, would that cause the same reaction? I doubt it; everyone would be on the side of the user.
