I use RH's printconf. It prints just fine to SMB shared printer I have at my Debian file/printer server. All the other computers at the house (running win2k) prints just fine to the printer as well. Get a real distro.
I'm from Korea. I know this first hand. Sorry to break it to ya, but the parent post is right. Everybody in Korea (except few who are geeky enough) use Windows, Korean version no less. There are actually korean linux distros out there, based on red hat. It just doesn't compare. The facts are facts, and you lost. MS has the same, if not bigger, monopoly in Korea. Even more in china, naturally. It doesn't matter what your reasoning is. The facts are just indisputable. So if you don't know the facts, just shut up and don't speculate. God damn couch scholars.
CLI is faster. There are just things that can not even be expressed in GUI. I've read that report and I said "BS." You really gotta stop believing everything you read. That study focused on idiots who obviously weren't geeky enough. Sure, if you don't know what you are doing and have to read the man pages, that's gonna be slow. But your average day CLI users are gonna have IQ higher than yours and can actually work CLI at a tremendous rate. It's called steeper learning curve, it's what Linux is all about. It's got higher learning curve, but, boy, when you get there, you are up there.
I've got pentium II 233 Mhz on W2k that cuts the job very nicely. According to MS, the machine is barely supposed to run W2k. Disable all the flashy crap, and it's very very usuable. It's not a linux thing.
Anything below that system, even in linux, would be very flakey in GUI. I have pentium 166 on Linux, and even in windows maker, GUI won't work well. Of course, it's a closet server.
Same here. I've got pentium 3 450Mhz (the slowest PIII ever manufactured) here and I even play a kickass games of quake 3 on radeon on linux.
But really. My brother's using 4~5 years old Pentium 2 233Mhz on W2k. He tried XP, but he hated it. W2k isn't bad, and I presume the computer will last quite a while.
You are a fucking idiot. Only idiot would design website for a living. Your PHB is a bigger idiot than you for paying you. If you think work isn't supposed to be fun, you are definitely an idiot. You choose a career that you like and find challenging. For example, stuff like, quantom physics, or computer science, or a writing. You ain't nothing but a skilled laborer, at least a step from _un_skilled laborer, but you are a long way from being a thinker.
Since when did slashdot started announcing the DEVELOPEMENT kernel releases?! Go read LKM if you want this!

Hey, smart one, it's called a _firewall_. You can actually disable any incoming connections (except the ones you made). It's called a stateful filtering and it effectively blocks just about everything from outside. Geez, two in a home server really is an overkill. Flex your power, man. (The power-saving slogan in California)
yes, Opera 6 (recently released) has ads. But for windows, you can get serial number for almost anywhere. And Opera 6 kicks some serious ass. Also make sure to try Opera 6 tp2 for linux. It's pretty damn awesome. I don't know aobut konqueror, I don't have KDE. I know Opera is at least better than any Mozilla/Netscape type thing.
I am sick and tired of these fanatical Linux zealots who think they are the savior of the world and that they need to somehow convert everyone into using it.
Linux isn't for everyone, duh. In fact, Linux is only for someone who really really wants to learn linux. There isn't any attractive advantages of Linux over win2k (cus XP sucks). Win2k is very stable and pretty damn cool.
God knows _the only_ reason I switched to Linux is because I like computers. I really really like computers. I want to be a computer scientists (being in high school). And I switched to Linux, because I can really learn about OS, programming and shitload of other stuff. I don't want some GUI shit to help me out! I don't even want any Linux specific stuff. If BSD had lot more documents available, and Linux didn't have crazy amount of support, I would be using OpenBSD now! (and will be as soon as I get the hang of it all.)
We really gotta _stop_ this evangelist crap. It only makes you people like no-life loser/freak.
Linux isn't exactly a desktop OS. It shouldn't be. Linux wasn't meant to be a "desktop" OS, it's supposed to be a free UNIX alternative. You don't see any other "UNIX" dominating the desktop, do you? (OSX doesn't count.) It's supposed to replace what UNIX did and does. That's high end server and rendering farm and all that enterprise computing stuff. And well, looks like Linux is catching on. That's good. It's doing what it was made to do.
Do you see anybody trying to use Solaris/IRIX/HPUX as an desktop alternative, do you?? Are you complaining because there aren't too many desktop initiative in those area? C'mone, man. If you can figure out how to do all that shit on your Linux, that's cool. If you don't like the crappy quality, well it was never meant to be. Go use Win2k. I tried it. It's plenty good.
if, by some freak incident, all DNS entries pointed to one (or a very small group of selected) IP? All requests would be directed to a concentrated number of IP. That's a mass DDoS for ya!
Well, I'm with San Diego Time Warner Cable/ Road Runner, and I'm in heaven. I can get around 250KB/s from kernel.org. But I also have 5 other computers sharing the same IP with masquerading using an old Pentium. (Which is a perfectly acceptable solution.)
But if you are saying you can get 5 static IP's for 70 bucks a month, that's pretty awesome. If I want _one_ static IP, I would have to pay for "business class" service at 150 bucks a month. Man, for 7 static IP's you can do a full NAT. Or even better, you can have your own subdomain! (www.dhs.org) That sounds pretty good to me.
You... are an idiot. HD is _not_ a limiting factor in file transfer. I dunno what kind of HD you use, but my old 4GB 5400 RPM can write faster than anything that comes through 100Mbps (full duplex). HD's average around 33MB per sec. that's 264Mbps. Unless you have a gbps lan, HD is still very fast.
I got my generic speedstep thing from an oem laptop manufacturer. I bought Presario from compaq, installed win2k. Then I found the driver from apparently a local laptop maker in chicago.
I will put it on my server here, but it will be gone soon. Grab it here.
It's been done before
Apparently, this isn't news at all.
Hear, hear. XP is a piece of shit. Win2k beat xp senseless in all aspects.
WTF?? Systeme International is obscure?? Do you goto community college?
This is the best idea I've heard so far.
Damn, that's crazy... :D
Cus it's KDE, that's why.
Some of us want choices.
Yes, I realize I can just use CUPS. I just don't like KDE, that's all. For that matter, GNOME isn't too cool either. I use wmaker.
I use RH's printconf. It prints just fine to SMB shared printer I have at my Debian file/printer server. All the other computers at the house (running win2k) prints just fine to the printer as well. Get a real distro.
funny as hell

Damn, already three freakin' stories on MS. All of them with insane amount of posts. Get some life, slashdot.

It's fake. Most obviously. It's still up. It's responsive. It's fake.
