  1. It's all about power on The Case for Free WiFi? · · Score: 1

The way to keep people with laptops moving is to limit the number of power outlets available. Eventually, laptops will run out of juice, and, if the place is packed, the freeloader will have to move on.

Of course, somebody could bring a power strip (or an extra battery)... but I've yet to see someone go to that extreme.

  2. Incorrect info regarding U. of MI on America's Most Connected Campuses · · Score: 1

Forbes listing for the University of Michigan has a couple of incorrect items.

We do have a wireless network on 'some portions' of campus (and it's growing).

We have provided space for web pages for quite some time. In fact, we just upgraded the standard amount of space available to 1GB per person.

Their methodology is weak. Users don't care about technology, they care about how easy and seamless it is to use.

Sorry, Tony Hawk 3 for PS2 gets the honor of "first online game of the three systems." You can hook up a USB modem or ethernet adapter and do some hot online gaming action.

How many lives could have been saved had this technology been put in place?

Not very many. My friend who worked at the NSA for four years says he would "not be surprised" if there were trainloads of tapes not yet scanned for information. His point, what good is the information we currently have if we get to it 6 months later? It is mostly a manpower issue, and an issue of updating technology to sift through all the info we already have and receive legally. (BTW, despite FUD and fear-mongers, the NSA does not snoop on U.S. citizens, even when they are abroad. There are laws in place to preserve our privacy. It's the FBI you have to worry about :)

Also, as has been pointed out, these guys used the same name, used the name of dead people, used their own names even though they were wanted by the FBI, yet there is no computer system in place to check these things. There's plenty that can be done to keep us more secure without giving up any liberties. I hope the politicians are listening.

Also, your premise that freedom is a "privilege" is complete horse manure. I hope by the time America is done kicking ass and making the world safe for our rights again, you and your philosophical ilk fall to the wayside.

IMHO, the reason why people complain about lame content in Ep. 1 is because they ... grew up.

Yeah, but after 20 years of filmmaking, why didn't George Lucas grow up, too? You'd think from 20 extra years of experience between Star Wars films Lucas would have some idea of his own limits as a writer, director, and vision/idea man/producer for movies. He's got the last part down, and I suppose he's a decent director, but, man, the lines he gives his actors in Ep. I and IV are pretty weak. "Yippee!" "Midichlorians!" "I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board!"

What amazes me is how, despite all those extra years of experience, similar Ep. 1 and 4 are: both written and directed by Lucas himself. The lines are equally horrible (though I would say that Ep. 4 has better moments with R2 and 3PO than Ep. 1 with Jar Jar), but Ep. 1 just has the bigger budget. It's a shame Lucas didn't spend any of it on a decent writer. I don't have any problem forgiving Ep. 4's shortcomings since it had a small budget, time restraints, and was the first go at the saga. But Ep. 1's style over substance, weak plot, hackneyed slapstick antics, and lame lines are unforgivable - especially considering Lucas had all that time to "grow up" with us.

In the end, I just hope Lucas is so overwhelmingly confident with Ep. 2 that he can afford to give it this, well, just f'in stupid title.
