  1. ODE TO AN OOSIK

Strange things have been done in the Midnight Sun,
and the story books are full---
But the strangest tale concerns the male,
    magnificent walrus bull!

I know it's rude, quite common and crude,
    Perhaps it is grossly unkind;
But with first glance at least, this bewhiskered beast,
is as ugly in front as behind.

Look once again, take a second look -- then
you'll see he's not ugly or vile --
There's a hint of a grin, in that blubbery chin --
and the eyes have a shy secret smile.

How can this be, this clandestine glee
that exudes from the walrus like music?
He knows, there inside, beneath blubber and hide
lies a splendid contrivance -- the Oosik!

"Oosik" you say -- and quite well you may,
    I'll explain if you keep it between us;
In the simplest truth, though rather uncouth
"Oosik" is, in fact, his penis!

Now the size alone of this walrus bone,
would indeed arouse envious thinking --
It is also a fact, documented and backed,
There is never a softening or shrinking!

This, then, is why the smile is so sly,
    the walrus is rightfully proud.
Though the climate is frigid, the walrus is rigid,
Pray, why, is not man so endowed?

Added to this, is a smile you might miss ---
Though the bull is entitled to bow --
The one to out-smile our bull by a mile
    is the satisfied walrus cow!

The widespread innumeracy among biomedical scientists is what allowed me to survive in grad school. With a basic knowledge of statistics you can make a small fortune (in grad school terms) crunching other people's data and making pretty charts and graphs. Not that I'm any kind of super math genius, but in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act now requires these sorts of technologies when electronically communicating medical information. So will doctors in these states nolonger be able to access patient, hospital or insurance records from off-site?

It's all a question of priority. Your medical information isn't as important as the latest Britany Spears release.

the big controversy was calculators in the classroom. And sure enough many of my less numerate peers never learned basic math skills. Would they have been forced to learn them if they didn't have the crutch of a calculator? Open question. Now with computers they won't have to learn how to spell either. It's bad enough I have to suffer with the near innumeracy and illiteracy of many otherwise brilliant recent grads. This old fart only sees this making things worse.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that helps out natural disaster victims and so forth, is actually part of a martial law government in waiting. Under Jimmy Carter's 1979 consolidation of various related agencies into FEMA, it acquired the Defense Department's Defense Civil Preparedness Agency. With the end of the Cold War this aspect of its mission has probably taken a back seat to floods, earthquakes and huricanes. But the capability is still there.

Quite possibly. The software in a medical device must be validated in order for it to be licensed. If you changed the code, didn't revalidate the software and put it into medical service, you would be commiting a crime in most states.

  10. Who funds the work? on Intellectual Property Issues In College? · · Score: 1

Just because a student is getting paid makes no difference. If it's related to the thesis project or the mentor's grant funded research then the rights belong to the University. If it's related to a private contract, than there's usually some sort of joint ownership between the sponser, the university and the mentor and/or student. But if you get the key idea at 4AM out of a sound sleep at home and have the presence of mind to jot down a couple of notes, you can sometimes argue the point. At least this is what we learned as grad students in the biomedical sciences.

A law degree with a technical background is a just a better educated lawyer. But a law degree with an advanced degree in a technical discipline can do serious good.
