A global organisation controlling the Internet would seem like a good thing, at least better than the current direction of every nation doing its own censorship fracturing the once global net to pieces. The problem is, the UN is the worst organisation for this job. First, it wouldn't solve the fracturing problem, the oppressive regimes are freely ignoring UN concerns about everything else already. And second, the UN is mainly a collective of corrupt first-world politicians and barbaric thirld-world tyrants. It's not a democratic organisation, and not one I would trust with anything. While the US control over the net is also threatening, they at least seem to listen to their people/corporations once in a while.
If a terrorist event is about to happen and they think it's near a bridge, finding "bridge" and "social network" and "ammonium nitrate" might be a good way to identify friends of the perp...
But in that case, a static list of words wouldn't help much as they would have to come up with new search terms for every event.
What's really disgusting are not the misguided kids but the core that promised them anonymity, while knowing very well that it was a lie which have landed many of their members in jail.
Which is why I capitalized it to mean the group and not the adjective, yet many are still keen to misunderstand it, preventing meaningful conversation.
I wouldn't say that rich people are less moral, they just tend to commit different crimes. Mebers of higher classes have subtle sins like theft and cheating. On the other hand, people of lower classes tend to commit more violent crimes, which weren't measured in the test.
Allowing women and married people to be priests would increase the pool of possible recruits significantly, thus the Catholic Church wouldn't have to stick with people who aren't fit to be priests. The problem with pedophilia is that it's just the tip of the iceberg. Priests are supposed to be examples of living a life dedicated to God, but if there are that many who could become priests while capable of doing an evil as great as forcing themselves in an unnatural way on a child who trusted them and whose protection were their duty, then it means that the selection process of priests is deeply flawed. Pedophilia is a fairly rare thing, and for every pedophile priest there are thousands who, while not that bad, commit some lesser sins that makes them incapable of serving as priests. I assume that the reason why those people could be priests is that the Catholic Church is afraid that with stricter rules there wouldn't be enough of them (although in my opinion it would still be the better alternative). Allowing more people to be eligible could solve that problem.
'Anonymous is a handful of geniuses surrounded by a legion of idiots,' says Cole Stryker, an author who has researched the movement. 'You have four or five guys who really know what they're doing and are able to pull off some of the more serious hacks, and then thousands of people spreading the word, or turning their computers over to participate in a DDoS attack.'"
Calling the core trolls geniuses is an overstatement. Most of them are just scriptkiddies whose most sophisticated attacks are correctly guessing when the password is 12345. The strategy of Anonymous is to try hacking against easy targets and DDoS against well-secured ones. And while DDoS is relatively easy to implement, the LOIC those "geniuses" came up with is a crappy tool.
Cooking is cheaper than eating out. The fact that there is a correlation between poor people and obesity it's not because low income causes obesity, but because there is a common cause behind those two things: laziness.
This is an open letter, and its main point is not to convince the opposition but to rally its own supporters. For which purpose chest pounding works very well.
In africa infertility used to be the second most common reason women went to the doctor. AIDS was number one. They will not do to the doctor if they are just old.
The population growth of Africa is the highest of the continents. Africans have many problems but infertility isn't one of them.
Unexplained infertility is a huge medical problem. If you go to the doctor, much of the time the honest answer is that "we just don't know"
And in most of those cases it is possible to use the woman's own eggs. When it's not feasible then there is some problem with the woman's body, which can make pregnancy a risk.
The problem is that it's not a proper DMCA takedown as Youtube cooperates voluntarily, and I'm pretty sure they have written the ToS in a way that you can't sue them for anything.
Being tried twice and being punished twice are different things. Retrial in light of new evidence if in the first trial the defendant was found innocent is a fairly common thing. However, in this case they already got a caution the first time.
I know that the British legal system is somewhat different than the continental one, but I thought that getting punished twice for the same crime was forbidden everywhere in the civilised world. After they got a caution for what they did, on what grounds can they be punished again for it?
True, but unlike a p2p network a botnet has to be directed. If the network were truly decentralized, any machine could command it, thus anyone could steal it. My guess is that in order to prevent hijacking the commands are signed by the C&C, and then distributed through the network. This way, the origin of the commands becomes very hard to trace, but this method also introduces some vulnerabilities. For example, as each infected machine connects to a number of other ones, getting a list of infected machines would be fairly easy. You just need to deliberately infect a honeypot, and you can already detect a lot of infected machines. So it might be more effective to change tactics and try to remove the infection instead of targetting the head.
Gossip and proven fact are very far from each other. Now that there is proof of the wrongdoings it's much harder to label them conspiracy theories.
Brian Aldiss I believe.

When the risk of participating becomes too high, most members will abandon Anonymous.
Because every store is required by law to accept it.
This is not direct democracy but a platform where everyone can propose bills. You can't vote on the Internet as there is no way to verify identity.
But why bother when a ticket is much cheaper than a camera?

we might need to redevelop some of the tools we used to defeat the Soviet Union
Money? Because you will need to somehow develop much more of that if you want to beat China.
I guess they will be manned on nuclear missions.
he only drug that causes more harm to others than to the user
Well, this sentence is true, but not because other drugs cause less harm to society.

It would probably take at least that long to find the next donor anyway.
When there is a donor they usually have four limbs, my guess is that the doctors didn't want the rest of it go to waste.

Most women lose their fertility for a reason. Whether it's menopause or cancer, getting pregnant is not a good idea in either case.
