Lobbying can be a legitimate part of the public debate. Unfortunately most "lobbyist" are in fact bribing representatives instead of just trying to make their point.
Yeah but if the Earth is only destroyed 10000 years from now than I don't really care. Also, it's impossible to move any significant portion of humanity out of Earth, a human just can't produce enough in their lifetime to get them a ticket out of here.
If we want to avoid collisions like that the most important thing to work on would be the detection of potentially dangerous objects and the accurate prediction of their trajectories. Deflection techniques won't receive funding until we have proof that the danger is real, now if we know it 20-30 years in advance that will be enough time to develop and deploy some kind of deflection. Also, if we want these to work we need a lot of very accurate information of the target object. So while these plans are certainly interesting I believe expanding our knowledge of asteroids is helping much more in avoiding such a catastrophe in the future.
The batteries are themselves a spark source which means that if they are damaged they are much more likely to catch fire. Gasoline tanks in most cars are on the opposite side than the engine and all the electrical parts, so even if they leak the chance of catching fire is small.
Alternative media and distribution already exists, and the main goal of the legislations Hollywood is lobbying for is exactly to stop them. It wil be hard to kill Hollywood using technology when they can outlaw any technology that competes with them.
Not trying to defend Anonymous here, but standing up for free speech means standing up for the free speech you don't agree with. Also, Megaupload was a file storage provider, not a piracy site. Granted, it was shitty service even for that, but it was easy enough to use for a layman, hence its popularity. Using it for piracy would be very uncomfortable, I don't think many people did that.
Risking damage to an engine when you shoot [at] a hijacker is better than letting the plane get turned into a giant cruise missile with the target of their choosing.
9/11 was the only such event. Most hijackers just want to negotiate and definitely don't want to kill themselves.
The article seems to suggest that it is a passive infrared device, so it doesn't emit any radiation by itself. Also, who they use it on depends on the laws.
As an example, many burglars get caught after the act, with incriminating evidence in their posession. Police are good at spotting people who try to escape with stolen goods, but of course they are not perfect. As a result, sometimes innocent people get questioned too. But it's still pretty far from "doing whatever they want" if you are not guilty the most you will lose are a few minutes.
Or offer him a deal to rat out everyone else instead of going down.
If it was hacked than the self-destruction wouldn't work.

The point of biofuel is not that it's ecological but that is, unlike fossil fuel, renewable.
These are relatively new cars and not really popular. The number of crashes they have sustained so far is too low to be representative.

That's like saying that antivirus developers are responsible for viruses because they profit from their existence.

You could build the ship in orbit thus circumventing those problems.

If you DoS from your own machine, you don't know what you are doing.
He wasn't modded down, he was modded to 1. Like the FAQ says, having good karma also means bigger responsibility.
He would already be fined. When there is no freedom of speech in traditional media, why do you expect it to exist elsewhere?
Yeah when you are shooting at everyone you ought to hit the right targets sooner or later...
It might be just a nickname.
Which is exactly my point, I don't think there is a reliable test measuring intelligence.
It is a very good argument why people outside the US should still care about SOPA/PIPA.

Because the IQ tests I have seen are all very bad measurements of intelligence.

Radiation is a valid concern but has nothing to do with privacy.
