Look at the prices these guys are charging, you're being treated like a dialup customer cuz thats what yer paying for. they have 1 meg sdsl for 100/month. I havent seen that for less than 225 in cali. Bottom line, they want Uncle Bill's dough. There are some business class customers that apparently will not be transitioned.
why is it cheaper to build overseas and ship here?

Dial U for Union

Unions thats why, they artificially inflate labor costs, resulting in people earning way more than they should for their skill set. They have seriously eroded the american job situation, and are in my opinion a reason for the gap between haves and have nots.
If there really is only one competitor and they suck, it should be easy for you. You'll need to have some idea of what kind of capacity to start with. Depending on whether e1 or t1 is the norm there, you could run several of those into something cheap like a Livingston pm3, 2 circuits per box. Each t1 ckt would give you 23 usable dialup lines, you could use multichassis ppp to span the same access number across all of em.
Have you thought at all about other access methods, or just dialup? Also Cisco access servers, like the 5300 could probably do this. You could use linux for radius, mail, web, and whatever other servers, perhaps offer a dialup acct + small web page as a package.
The ideal situation here is a mixed bag. Since being on call requires you to give up some personal freedom, a flat rate per day/week/month is approipriate. Then above that a per incident rate for each time, outside normal business hours, that you have to leave wherever you are at to tend to work matters.
This is not surprising to me at all, I have spent the last 6 years working for isp type companies, and their numbers have dwindled massively. Currently, the number of ISPs has dwindled massively. I really don't want telcos to be the best option for this.
Yeah, it is important to not have the Linux is the only option microsoft burn in hell blinders on. Use the best app to solve your problem(s), and let the chios fall where they may. If Microsoft's software turns out to be inferior, and another easy to use for the typical consumer option comes along, they will fade.
There is some truth to what is being said here. Though there are folks willing to write software for the thrill of completing the task, if that is a no charge item, then you still need a day job to pay the bills. As a result, focusing on development will be a larger chore.
These companies had many clients who, mostly as isps, couldn't wouldn't pay their bills. My take is that although I vastly prefer dsl to cable, its distance dependencies and the cash reserves of cable companies are problems that are difficult to overcome.
Soundblaster connected cd, u mean that ancient prehistoric relic isa wannabe sound card with a scsi connector on it? Those were ancient three years ago. Sound processing has improved just a bit, or do you not want to spend a little dough on a scsi card?
I couldn't agree more, use the best tool for the job. Solaris lets yo uuse up to 8 processors with the 75 buck version, wasily enough to develop on a decent Ultra or Enterprise.
I agree mostly with this, but most Linuxites also want software for dirt or no cost. so i am not surprised. An alternative would be to develop it for 1 distribution and support only that one.
dhcp as a defense is lame. If the ip of a computer changes, which is not that often on this network from what I hear, that is little defense. You come on the net, people will probe you. Once they get in with a trojan horse or sumthing, the numerical value of your ip doesn't mean squat.
which means if u want a static, pacbell is driving you to their service..

Hey if someone laid somethin on my property without my permission, that's serious invasion.

Competition; I see none in the consumer desktop area.

Not sure what else to say about this, hope their stock implodes like a lot of other tech companies. P/E ratio is rather healthy unfortunately.
This is fabulous news, my grin for the day definitely.

Setup a caching name server on your lan, which will improve performance anyway. Then just use dns magic to make doubleclick sites not work.
This is probably doable with a programmable chip, i remember studying programmable logic arrays in ee a few years. Its a simple start, but a start..

Nationwide unemployment is at a 30 year low, you don't like it, leave..
http://www.mysimon.com has it as cheap as $41.50 or so..

stuff happens when u share your whole drive and not the mp3 folder..
If you vote for Nader, companies may not control america, but be assured you will not gain freedom. His stances border on socialism.
