I can remember when none of this mattered in the old slashdot days, when you said what you wanted when you wanted. Now lawyers are involved and the whole works, it's a lot different.
I am a Linux user. I spend 99.9% of my computing time in the debian distribution of linux. The last.1% of my computing time goes to Windows, for one simple reason. And that is to burn CDs.
Linux does not support my generic SCSI card/CDR, so I am forced to use Windows 95. Windows 98 dosent like my CDR and i'm scared to even know what Windows 2000 will do with it.
Why Windows 95? Because it is fast, small, works with my cdrom and dosent crash toooo often. In my mind, Windows 95 was bascially the last stable version of Windows.. now I may be wrong because I haven't seen Windows 2000 yet, but 98 was just a waste.
I just thought I would share my setup with others.:)
I find this great in that Debian has been active lately, more active than before. Debian now has backing and you can purchase boxed versions, and with this freeze, Debian will continue to be stronger and stronger. I was very suprised by the quantity of bugs squashed in just one day. Great work!
I think once again we owe a big thank you to VA Linux for providing yet another non-commercial site with the hardware they need to successfully provide their service for the number of hits they receive. I can't name how many times we have seen this, and it's just great that it's going on. A true sense of the linux community spirit.:)
I tried switched to mutt a while ago, but I am just so used to pine! I know you can bind the keys in mutt, but for some reason it didn't seem right. Maybe I will try it again sometime, but god I hate it that I am so attached to pine:)
Just downloaded M10, and boy is it looking good. Besides the usual crashes, espically with the bottom toolbar, is there anyway to save the window size when you close mozilla? It always opens as a small window and I'm a 800x600 man. But besides these small things, I love the new moving logo in the corner, and the pages fly when loading now!
What a day to decide to grab the new netscape! I thought everything seemed so slow. But in all seriousness, those must be some big backhoes that cut the connections because I figure those fibers are several feer in diameter.
AOL can really be used in linux? I guess you could dial up and use wine or vmware to run it, but gosh, I thought it was strickly windows. If you go through all that trouble though, just go with a regular isp:)
This _has_ to be a joke, because if it isn't, then thousands of companies are left open to be sued over stuff like this. Nintendo is just doing something to sell their cards, and they are right in doing it.
I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but viewing yankees.com in Netscape 4.61 in linux looks terrible. I think the website probably is really good, and I loved Jon's article, but the fonts on that site are microscopic. I think it needs to be tweaked just a bit more.:)
I think the ISO images Caldera posted is a very smart idea. Not 100% sure on this, but RedHat and debian and the like don't post images? It would be much better if they did so I could dust off that cd burner I have. And if they do, they should really publicise it more.
I don't know how the system is on LinuxToday.. but whenever you post a comment it says to wait for it to be moderated and checked out. Do they do this by person or automatically(which would be impossible). If it is auto.. then maybe slashdot could impliment it?
There are two sides to the story here as I see it. I can completly understand why they want a cut of the profit for software that sells for 500 bucks.. who wouldn't?
But I can agree with how programmers have to get a license from them in order to use their stuff. Just when I thought maybe open-source and it's beliefs would change some stuff, it's just getting weirder and worse in some ways.
My advise to Unisys, end the policy of having to give out licenses for small time programmers to use your work. But, if they finish the program, and it's popularity grows and grows, then be forced to take a cut.

As Linus stated at a LinuxWorld, he actually suggests that if people have 2.0 running nicely, to stay with it. He said 2.2 is not needed to run a nice fast system.
I sincerely hope that the BWP II does not have to be made in some hollywood studio with cheezy effects. While the BWP wasen't exactly the most scary thing on earth, it was a bit tense to watch. And what would they put in the sequel besides?:)
While it's a good idea that the radio recordings were moved to a central place, it's going to be hard to tell when new versions are posted. I am a huge fan of slashdot radio, and I might miss some new versions of it.
My suggestion is to somehow manage to have the radio icon, maybe have a new one just for slashdot radio, and have that button be in the row of icons at the tops of the pages. This way it dosen't take up story room, but for the people who want to make sure they get new versions asap, they will know.

Speaking about the HTML access.. what about people who dont in fact have web access? That limits one of the sources.

That's exactly how I got 144 megs of ram.
As for the old 16MB SIMM, yes, it does slow down the system a tiny bit, but nothing noticeable.

Well, the thing is, I don't think my cheap video card can even run it. I'm going to try, but I'm already convinced that it will flop.
But after all this great information, I am seriously cosidering a high-end video card.

Yeah, I knew that the generic video card would kill me, but I didn't think the processor would matter, as 400 isn't too shabby yet.
:)
I think I am going to spend some cash on a good well-worth it video card. Which one do you suggest out of the ones listed?
Thanks for the help though, and hopefully soon I can be checking out what q3demo is all about.

I was just wondering what kind of system it was that those pictures were taken on?
I have a AMD K6-2 400, with 144 megs ram, but a cheap video card.
The game should look good if I get a good video card, but what does everyone suggest? And is my system fit for running smooth and looking good in q3?

Oh thanks. I'll download it tonight and try it. It's just so annoying to have to resize mozilla everytime you use it. :)

Well, the part about selling the windows version scares me. Why not sell the linux one; the one that is most developed and worked on most often?
