  1. Could there be a valid reason? on Man Barred From Being Alone With Daughter After Informing Police of Porn On PC · · Score: 1

Am I the only one that suspects that maybe "I meant to download music" was just a lie he told his wife, and perhaps there was a ton of child porn on there?

  2. My $0.02 on Ask Slashdot: Most Efficient, Worthwhile Charity? · · Score: 1

I used to give to the Salvation Army, but I've been avoiding them this year because I'm not sure how much of my money is going to help people vs proselytize to them, in fact I've decided to no longer donate to religious charities. Toys for Tots is my new favorite. Giving a teddy bear to a poor kid may not make the biggest impact in the world, but it's going to make that kid's Christmas a lot better.

  3. Really? on Have Walled Gardens Killed the Personal Computer? · · Score: 1

I read through the comments here and saw a lot of "Fuck those idiots for wanting a different type of device than me." I'm disappointed in you, Slashdot. It's up to the individual to choose what suits his needs. Maybe it's an ipad, maybe it's a dell, maybe it's a blade server running beos. Either way, it's his purchase and none of your damned business. Grow up.

  4. Another example of people thinking reactively on Worldwide Support For Nuclear Power Drops · · Score: 4, Insightful

There's a problem with a 50 year old nuclear plant built on the coast in an earthquake zone, that means nuclear power is too dangerous for everywhere else! By that logic it's not worth buying a 2011 Mercedes, after all the timing chain broke in my 1961 Dodge that must mean all cars are garbage.

Lets not dignify these idiot kids by calling them hackers. Clicking a button is not hacking.

I think his point was that proves that they're a bunch of cowards, they're afraid to go after anyone who isn't bound by the law. I agree, 'Anonymous' is a joke. It's nothing more than a group of script kiddies who are good at marketing themselves.

  7. Call me stupid, but how is this different? on Antitrust Case Over, Microsoft Ties IE 10 To Win 8 · · Score: 1

A good chunk of the functionality in XP, Vista, and 7 is tied to IE. Try removing Internet Explorer and then using Windows Update (no WSUS server, that's cheating). So it will be tied into more applications, wonderful, I work in IT and thousands of new avenues of attack for malware writers means I get to feed myself by cleaning up the aftermath. Also, considering that we're rapidly approaching the era where OS is irrelevant, and that Apple today is not the Apple of 1997, is Microsoft even a monopoly anymore?

I don't understand why you think I haven't explained this to her, I have, since she first got a computer in 2001. Repeatedly, until I was blue in the face. She doesn't care, she wants things to be 'easy'. I even tried setting her up with Keepass password safe to help keep track of all her web accounts so she wouldn't have to memorize anything. She insisted that I make the master password the dog's name, all lowercase, just like all her other passwords. It's willful ignorance, goes hand in hand with the "I'm not a computer person" mentality.

  11. This will never end on The State of Hacked Accounts · · Score: 4, Insightful

People just don't care enough about it to inconvenience themselves with strong authentication, how many of our mothers use their dog's name, in all lowercase, as their password on every single one of their accounts?

A lot of people seem to forget that Apple was doing this in the mid 90's, they had a PPC Mac that could boot DOS and Windows 3.1 via an x86 daughtercard, you used a key combination to switch between the two.

You're entitled to make a digital copy of a VHS you own so long as you do not distribute it. If you don't care about breaking the law I'm sure you can already find an unaltered VHS rip on your favorite torrent site. E.T.'s message is more of a liberal 'guns are bad' attitude than an attempt at indoctrinating us into a police state. Again, Speilberg owns the movie and can do as he pleases with it, no matter how stupid. What's next, are we entitled to the footage left on the cutting room floor, the stuff that never even made it to the theater?

I don't think he's preventing anyone from seeing anything, he's not dedicating money towards distributing something he considers an inferior product, and as the owner of the IP he's in a position to make those kinds of decisions. If you want the 80's incarnation of star wars buy the VHS on ebay.
