Yeah the alpha's great, I use one as well.
The FOP38 is actually even better, but completely unusable as you prolly wouldn't hear a vacuum cleaner while your box is running.
The Alpha is relatively quiet when you compare it to other good coolers.
how can there be a way to "copy protect" an audio cd, when all you have to do is play it on your home cd player and pipe the sound to your box thru the optical link ? as long as I'll be able to do that I wont feel concerned by this stuff at least..
Actually telemarketers can be quite funny, you can have a lot of fun when they call:)
but fax spamming is really a pain, companies send more and more useles spam, and the thermal paper used in my device is actually pretty expensive.. besides, you have to call them back to have them stop (another thing you pay in europe..) and you cannot easily make sure the fax isn't going to be something usefull before part of it is thru.
A great trick I did a few times is to locate a fax number at the spammer's company, take a blank sheet of paper and write STOP SPAMMING ME on it. Fax it out to them, but while the top of the sheet is coming out, bind it to the end of the sheet with some tape in order to form a roll that keeps going thru the fax:) do this at night, so no one notices and in the morning they get a 100 pages long flame:)
speaking of oldies clusters, I was wondering about how many 486 it takes in a cluster to outperfom a single recent box, an athlon 1GHz for example ?
of course this is not possible because of space/electricty/noise/.. but I still like the idea of building an almost free cluster out of old junk just for fun:)
I agree with you on all points except maybe noise, I guess brand new large scsi drives are much better at that now (bit too expensive for me to try out) but most "older" scsi drives I ve seen - more in the 2-10 gb range - were all much more noisy than the IDE equivalent. A noisy box is always a pain, so think about that and try it out before you buy.

you can check your RAM chips using memtest86 ( http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/ ). Using this program I could detect a very tiny problem in one chip that had caused one box to panic after over 20 days of uptime (also had an allocation problem message running 2.4.9 but linux wasn't the culprit). This is a good tool to have, specially now that we have these huge and cheap RAM chips.. a tiny bit that's fscked up in there can be a real mess. The only thing is this testing can take ages on older CPUs, altho major problems show up almost immediately.
might not have worked for your equipment, but it sure did for me..
the actual device I used was the garmin etrex (link : http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexsummit/ ). I wasnt sure if it could be used onboard, but the crew said it was ok. The device worked properly during the whole flight, showing correct measures according to screen displays on the plane. this GPS receiver has an air pressure device built in for better altitude sensing, but I guess that doesn't make a big difference in a pressurised airplane..
that's bullshit. all recent GPS receivers work fine in airplanes. it's actually pretty cool to watch while flying:)
some airline companies even display a map on the monitors with the GPS position of the plane during the fligh, as well as speed and height info, which were very close to those shown on the little hand carried device.
oh well... I guess If you only listen to the crappy country music you get on radio, that's normal. I usually get sick after about 10 minutes of listening to any radio station. And I've been in the US, and it's MUCH MUCH worse there.

couldn't have found better words.. while I have several linux boxes at home, I still use win2k for desktop stuff and a few games.
I guess there's no way around it anyway, as long as so much hardware needs m$ and no good games are available..
chello is also still active in belgium, where they offer a correct service. It keeps disconnecting too often but it's bearable.
chello and brutele are two cable ISPs here in Brussels and they both offer unlimited bandwith usage. Of course we only get about 1Mbps down, but I'd wouldnt trade that for a much faster limited bandwith account anyway.
Just stop using the service if it appends adds to your incoming emails.
Just put up a filter that mails back some kind of "sorry I did _NOT_ receive your email because you are using an evil spamming mail service. Consider changing your service provider" to people who use those services who append BS to their mails.
Of course appending one single line to outgoing emails on free accounts is pretty much ok, as you're not paying anything and agreed to it anyway.. but I'd definitely put up some filter if those bastards start sending out html mails with banners attached and such.
Well, having a voting system is certainly a good thing, but the only solution of this kind that will actually work against the worst k1dd1es is having a lot of trusted admins on the server playing the game.
I played some CS on servers with a mod installed allowing people to vote to change maps, kick users off etc, but as at least 70% of the people need to agree and actually vote against someone, it didn't happen too often.. besides, imagine having 4 or 5 lamers (possibly even clones/bots) join the game you were playing with a few friends, no way you can vote them off because they represent a good percentage of the number of players... actually they might even manage to kick you off. letting only users who come often vote for kicks might be a good idea.
Now this I would _REALLY_ hate to see happen if I had bought a P4 system already (wich i would of course never have done, just love my thunderbird).
I realise that doing such a thing might be necessary for Intel and cannot be planned in advance, but still, it sounds to me like:
1) people who already bought a P4 system were screwed by the company,
2) sounds like a poor marketing move, to the eyes of the public when a brand new system gets his price cutted in half, it means there must be a catch (if it's as great as they keep telleing you, why dont they sell them at full price ?).
yeah I realise that's a Joe Average thought, but hey, he's the one who is supposed to buy it, right ?
The game is really impressive graphically, and thus it _does_ require killer hardware. I'm sure you could play it fine on the K6 but that's not exactly how it was meant to feel.
Running the game on a 1Ghz athlon 256 ram geforce2 GTS, you still experience slight ocasional slowdowns.
my point is, yes it does require top hardware, but it's worth it to many people, because the game kicks ass.
and you're 100% right here, DSL is technically limited to a much lower speed than cable is.
My cable modem for example can theoritically download at the maximum speed of 20 MBps. Most ISPs cap the speed so low that in most cases, a DSL acces _is_ faster tho.
except other suid files might be exploited, and newgrp doesn't add any groups, it allows you to run stuff under anoter GID.

phew :) if anyone has that kind of monster running I want to see it !

offtopic, but might help with memory issues ..

I totally agree with you. Slackware rocks ! ..
small, clean, fast, stable, easy to tweak,
definitely a lot more interesting than most bloated distros !
I think you're right. alltho I guess using three words would be pretty much ok also.

you can certainly be proud of your grandfather.
ham radio is just another way to communicate, people who think that only fat bald guys use it should really get a clue btw.
