Imagine, my ISP (not a big one) has NO tech support during the night ! It happened to me a few times that calling back severall times to get them to solve something involved speaking with a different person, telling a completely different story.. to the point that I once had to threaten them to sue for incompetence to get my line back up.
Oh yeah, and they also mailed a word macro virus to all their customers a year ago, and I had to call them to explain the problem.
On the other hand uber large companies are not much better at handling tech issues, I'm still trying to figure out how to get that RMA number from IBM europe for this clicking 46gb drive, and everytime I get to speak to someone they want some obscure system part which my drive hasn't..
What also pisses me up is when email to tech support goes ignored. They apparently feel like it's ok to delete the few requests they cant/dont want to handle, seriously damaging the whole company's image. I've sent unanswered mails to many helpdesks, and I know prefer to call (from work of course:) at least you sometimes get a chance to tell them how much their support sucks.
I cannot even start to imagine how I would have felt If I've had to listen to 45 minutes of 'we value your call, please hold' bullshit from network solutions on an international call from home.
Tech support can be fun tho (well, sometimes), provided you're getting paid correctly and you're free to investigate the issues yourself. You can learn a lot from finding a way to fix the thousands of issues that come up, not from blindly following braindead scripts. I'm currently working as an operator for a large company's datacenter and do some tech support on a few applications we host, and beeing good at helping people out is quite rewarding. Granted, that's very different from large call centers work.
this must be some kind of a joke..
I wonder how it made it to a/. story. How can you pretend to be a serious 'hacking school' when your homepage uses l33t sp34k and states that the 'school' itself has a black pirate flag pirate flag on the front and graffiti inside ?
it all becomes clear when you look at the intended audience : http://www.dmpfrance.com/zh05.JPG 31337 isn't it:)
nah, a firewall will do no good here, unless the trojan horse is really, really lame (and they have plenty of money to build a bleeding edge virus, I guess).
It could either disable the personnal firewall directly, or make sure the communications wont trigger an alarm on 95% of the systems (ie. talk to a commonly used port, send data encapsulated in icmp packets, loads of possibilities).
I do beleive my systems are secure. However, I _know_ it's not impossible for me to get fucked a way or another, and you should be aware of that as well.
so why wont they release a mouse for the console ? it's basically a PC inside, hooking up a mouse to a gameport should'nt be such a problem.. ok it means you have to play on a table or something, but i'd still prefer that to aiming with the paddle..
This is really a great system ! of course it's a bit expensive but still, having two more linux boxes inside your system to play around with, without the extra cases/cables/noise sounds awesome. it would also rock to host several small servers.. I'll definitely try to get some.
do you think this is even possible considering the rights management and the ATRAC audio encoding and such ? a MD based storage solution would be great but I wonder if the MD's file system would permit that.. anyone having some info on that ?
I'll take a slower but more standard format anyday for a mobile device.. I'd hate having firewire only and not beeing able to use it AT ALL when I need it because the box doesn't support it.
well, AFAIK MD devices only play back ATRAC encoded music, if someone comes up with a tiny MD player that plays 300 mb of mp3 it would be a success, but I doubt this is even possible considering how cripled the MD storage system is..
you're absolutely right ! homework was an awesome album. discovery is not that bad but it sounds like media whoring radio tunes ! it used to be all about killer electronic beats that really rocked.. I will not buy this new album.
of course people did that, a lot of the technology you see on cars today comes from the last years of experience in car racing, such as formula 1 wich are pretty much computer controlled and have a lot of features.. now using a PC to do so does sound a bit stupid (would still be a great hack but pc hardware would really suck for that kind of system)
well most people pickup cds easily thanks to the hole in the middle.. I'm not sure if a quarter sized cd can afford a large and handy hole:p
removing it from a case could be easy if you build a well designed holder (just like you can press the plastic parts that show up in the CD's hole) but moving it from the case to the device is still going to be a pain in the ass. I'd definitely prefer having a caddy around it.
how the hell would you pickup a quarter-sized CD without caddy ? by pressing your finger on it so the disk sticks to it when you lift your hand up ?
such a small disk needs a protective caddy..
besides, MD have a caddy and this makes them much better at surviving handling and such, the disk inside never actually touches anything.
you're right ! MD is actually not bad at all, it rocks for walkmans ! in europe you can see them everywhere, and while there aren't many prerecorded MDs in the stores, no one gives a fuck ! it's an excellent format for carrying your music around, and the copy protection is not such a big issue for most users.
I'm certainly no thermo guru but there is no such thing as coolness conduction, it's just the heat that moves away, coolness beeing the absence of heat I guess. the benchmarks show you can expect at most a few degrees difference with the usual steel case, thus certainly not worth the price if heat conduction is your main issue (get some extra fans for the same price, or a water cooling system).
actually, you'd better not be too rough with them.. A coworker of mine sells them (has a small online shop) and while the lian li cases are SO FUCKN NICE to look at, they do scratch much easier than a conventional case. while aluminium with a few brushes/scratches still looks better than the usual cheap case, I wouldnt want to scratch such an expensive case..

Bill Gates is believed to have told a gathering of his highest ranking officers, "Well, boys, I am really, really rich. This is your problem. Bye."
:)
how many more april fool's will we have to endure ?
yeah, but he probably copied it all from the last kernel release's 'five standard replies' rant :)
jk.
undernet does, try the /silence command

quite something else :)
the evil of harry potter (adequacy.org) paper
you must be kidding - how can you even TRY to compare the crappy resolution output of the PS2 with a geforce3 hooked to a computer monitor ?
..
I'd say PS2 games on a good tv look as nice as 3+ years old pc games *at best*
of course the visual aspect is just one thing, playability is another
I agree 100%.

real mainframes have always been able to run severall OSes and to divide hardware ressources I think.

AMD needs to quit playing the marketing games and get their clock speeds up.
isn't that exactly what the marketting bs is all about ?!

yeah, especially considering the fact that it was NOT a typo .. aluminium would be the correct term.

i'd say if cpu stays under 60 degrees celsius at all time, your really fine.
