Am I the only one who is tempted to put duct tape on everything with a camera on it? We have curtains to keep people from peeking in. Why do we accept total strangers to watch us, analyze us and 'target' us with advertizing crap?!?
Perhaps the article is right that more than half of IT is going into a cloud. That means that almost half will still be in-house, and it is usually that half which requires the IT support staff. It is local, customized applications that need attention. Sure, a word processor can be ran anywhere. But your CRM system will not be so easy to move into the cloud, Regardless of what cloud vendors are trying to tell you.
No, the second biggest challenge is to come up with a viable exit strategy. Once you have several TB at this service provider, how will you move it out of there when the next provider has a better deal? That was one of the major big points for having a cloud in the first place, to have the freedom to move your compute requirements to a better, cheaper, faster (pick two) provider.
Even if you moved it in with a station wagon full of tapes or disks and your provider let you import it, I'm sure your provider will not be so helpful when you need to move it back out.
Blatant plug: Perhaps Actifio (www.actifio.com) can fix this for you, by replicating your data in, and also back out of production systems in deduped and compressed format.
And make sure patents are lifted as soon as ownership transfers to some other company or entity. Patents are meant to protect YOUR work, they are not meant as an object of trade or to be collected by Mafia-like organizations to be used as ammunition.
If shops would be as well presented with lobby groups as the entertainment industry by the **AA, then they would argue that shoplifting should be stopped by installing TSA scanners at each shop, and every potential customer sign a waiver that allows the shop owner full cavity search.
The point is not that something was taken/stolen/pirated. There are laws for that and the owner can act on it.
The point of all this is that people's freedom and privacy is taken away with censorship, ever growing monitoring and threats to sue, because of 'commercial losses' that clearly do not exist. The **AA is allowed to shoot with cruise missiles to swat a couple of flies. The fact that millions of other people are impacted is taken for granted. And that is wrong. Very wrong.
Impossible. That would mean they would have to get rid of some *managers* too! Sorry, that ain't gonna happen. People with actual knowledge, sure. R&D, perhaps. But firing MANAGERS?? No way! Someone has to fill all the procedures and spreadsheet targets, ya know..
Yes, this is censorship. But think before you judge.
Just like there is a ban on sending information about nuclear systems around, the Dutch government wants to prevent him from sending information that can be used to threaten humanity itself. If there is an easy way to modify bird flu virus so it will become lethal to humans, then it is important to keep that information away from idiots who will abuse that knowledge to push a political or religious agenda. Let alone someone actually releasing such a virus in your country "to show the power of God/Allah/(your favorite fairytail here)"...
I own an Opel Astra. It is about 9 years old. Opel has released several new models and types, all better than mine, probably safer and with more features. So in your view, Opel can now tell me that they will not fix my car anymore if something breaks? And if a fatal design flaw is found (eg. all brakes stop working after 10 years), they don't have to act with a recall? Hmmm.
Set aside for a moment that XP is pretty old. I bought a legal copy of it. It does not have an expiration date on it, I am entitled to run it as long as I wish. My license appears to allow me to replace my hardware if it fails. But at some point XP may find that the changes are 'suspect' and require me to re-activate my legally bought copy. Will Microsoft continue to run their activation servers?
If not, will Microsoft provide a 'Golden Key' to activate without their Genuine Advantage Farm??
Yeah, you are right about us having to develop alternative energy sources because we run out of current ones.
One could also try approach things from the opposite end. Stop using so much energy! Why are you typing your comments on an octa-core i7 system when a lowly ARM-based system will do just fine. Why are we running mega server farms and wasting huge amounts of energy and resources in high-end super-game-monster-machines to play games? Why do you take your car to go two blocks when there's sidewalks? Why are all the lights on in your house when you are home alone?
So BREIN are clearly barking up the wrong tree. The verdict was handed to Ziggo and XS4ALL, not the Piratenpartij. If anyone has to block anything, it will be Ziggo and XS4ALL, when BREIN hands them the URL and/or IP address of that particular proxy. Nowhere in the verdict does BREIN get the right to push arbitrary sites around, or to hand out orders of any kind.
Oh, by the way, if BREIN does have that IP address blocked, they automatically commit political censorship, which by itself is enough to drag BREIN into court.
I think you are wrong here. Check out the Odyssey batteries. A PC680 delivers over 500A for 20 seconds and weighs just over 7kg. 150A for 60 seconds should be no problem. I have one of these to start my Jabiru 3300 aircraft engine and it never fails me.
The very worst thing I see when someone opens a presentation is "Slide 1 of 50+". If you do want to use slides, use them as a guide only. A single picture is lots better than 20 bullet points. And for heavens sake, Do Not Read The Text To Us!!!
Make sure you know your subject, prepare 4 slides max and talk about your subject. Start with a question or quiz to engage your audience. Trick them into a 'Duh...' moment. Get interactive and don't be afraid to say "I don't know"...
So you have a team of engineers working on a design for weeks or even months. It's finally done, and now you are arguing that the CPU to translate to G-code takes an hour extra? Rrright...
I think all we need to do is sit back and let them fight. Let the big corporations fight over stupid patents. Yes, it will hurt innovation now, and it will hurt consumer interest in the short term. But by having them fight over hundreds, if not thousands of trivial patents, the system will implode. Companies will have to conclude that patents are starting to become more of a burden than they are worth.
Why not implement the next step right away? Just attach a collar to every world citizen and track them. Add remote control by giving electrical shocks to the left and right, and you have 6 billion living drones. If one steps out of bound, declare them 'defective' and kill on the spot.
I am changing jobs to work for a new US startup. I am very excited about the job, except for having to travel to the US for training and business meetings. The thought of having to deal with constant surveillance as well as the 'security' theater makes me very uncomfortable.
Before 9/11 I enjoyed traveling to the US very much. This all changed when I saw the sheer over-reaction when I took my kids (4 and 6 at the time) to Orlando. Being Dutch, they did not speak a word of English at that age. On arrival of the flight, groggy after nine hours in a plane, they were shouted at to take off their shoes. My youngest almost fell over while taking his shoes off and leaned against the post of the scanner. 4 years old... The security goons went crazy, how dare you touch their scanner! The yelling and screaming really made for a great start of our vacation.. This incident has changed my mind about the US forever.
The definition of terrorism is trying to change society by inflicting fear. The muslims on 9/11 did this on one horrible day. The US government is doing it every day, ever since.
You actually run the risk, even asking the question, of implying you have an idea for a product on your current companies time, that you may be thinking about (even if not implementing), so if you leave they may claim that work was done on this project on their time, and you're in violation of their agreement, and they have ownership of some of your work. The question posed could be phrased as 'i have this great idea for a product, how do I get out of having to give my employer any money for it'.
You can get around this by posing the question differently. Simply suggest that you do not have that idea, instead one of your friends does. And your friend has asked if you could help out on the side. You are now doing the prudent thing by asking your employers legal department if they have anything against that.
It really makes me wonder. New laws are being proposed in rapid succession to give organizations more and more power over individuals. What laws are being proposed to save us all from this?
Did you migrate any of these to a cheaper/better provider lately?
Getting in is one thing. Getting out is something entirely different.
Am I the only one who is tempted to put duct tape on everything with a camera on it? We have curtains to keep people from peeking in. Why do we accept total strangers to watch us, analyze us and 'target' us with advertizing crap?!?

The IT staff is here to stay.

Linux kernel 2.4.0 was released in 2001. Until very recently there was still active development on it.

Indeed. "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"...

This has been used for ages by HAM radio operators. Horizontal and vertical polarization antenna's can be used independently, or even together to create circular polarization. See: http://www.astronwireless.com/topic-archives-antennas-polarization.asp and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_(radio)

Wait five years, this will be solved.
Why not implement the next step right away? Just attach a collar to every world citizen and track them. Add remote control by giving electrical shocks to the left and right, and you have 6 billion living drones. If one steps out of bound, declare them 'defective' and kill on the spot.
