Is it just me, or does the Opaque/Transparent distinction seem too vague to be enforcable? The portion indicating that HTML is sometimes but not always opaque seems the best example of this, but overall the distinction seems to be problematic.
I disagree entirely. Patents, Trade Secrets, Copyright, they all need to go. Trademark should be weakened to just the product name. The idea of owning ideas is just stupid.
After having read the update, and recognizing the name of Theo der Raadt as being one of the more problematic people in the BSD movement, it seems likely that Joode is entirely in the right. In fact, if I were Joode at this point, I would keep openssh.org as it is currently, not turn it over to anyone, and write some nice essays that make it clear how much of a loony Theo is. It's clear that Theo is doing his best to smear Joode...
Xenix may have been popular, but it was widely regarded as being very very outdated...
SCO bought Xenix from Microsoft, and then later renamed it.
WRT all the services you mention, many of them already have parallels or implementations on Unix. XPCOM is proably a suitable replacement for COM.. unless they get a clue and go CORBA, in which case there are lots of choices... Unicode is already pretty much there.
There are plenty of database libraries you can use ... I don't really see how ODBC is really an interesting technology...
It seems that most of the things you want to talk about are OLE and friends....
While I wouldn't claim that it'd be an easy port, I doubt it'd take nearly as much reinenting the wheel as you describe.
OTOH, perhaps it's a good thing that there isn't Office on Linux -- if staroffice becomes enough of a standard, then when Linux crushes windows, no parts of microsoft will manage to ride the tide...
Most of us don't fly every day of our life. What might be a negligable risk for an occasional traveler could add up to being a sizable risk for someone who is exposed every day. Ever gotten a little dizzy from the gasoline fumes while filling your car? Me too, and although I doubt it's had any long term effects because I don't need to fill the tank very often, if it happened multiple times every day, I'd probably try harder to avoid it (hold my breath?)

Atheism doesn't really free you from morality

After all, many different religions advocate different moral systems, and some don't advocate a moral system at all. If you have a given set of morals, you can probably find a religion that's ok with them, making you no less free than if you were an atheist. Atheism, like theism, is a broad category of beliefs, and it's difficult to generalize about either. Mysticism, materialists, some forms of humanism, and various other philosophies all fit under the broad banner of atheism, just as christians, hindus, believers in the greek gods, and many others fit under the broad banner of theism.
To directly respond to your paragraph arguing "How is atheism responsible...", if you're religious, there's little difference. You find the moral framework you like, then find the religion that can justify it. Accept god? Which one? It doesn't seem clear why jehovah is really much of a better candicate than zeus, krishna, or various other supposed deities for worship -- there's no evidence for any of them existing, there's a good reason to believe that they all were made up in order to secure social order, and they're all described in fanciful texts with plenty of things that we now can scientifically verify as error.
