    I have never met a scientologist in person (or been made aware, if I did), but I am curious about how to convince someone that their religion is taking advantage of them, without making it sound like prejudice, or a personal attack against them. So, what was it that got you started asking questions? (I know about clambake, but I suspect that if you give a scientologist a URL, he will not use it, or will believe it is just bigoted anti-CoS propaganda).

    It's still a click away in the package manager.

    One click and five hours of waiting for people stuck in a country that doesn't recognize a "right to broadband". And is GIMP still in main (stuff for which Canonical sells support), or has it been moved to universe (free software ported to Ubuntu for which Canonical does not sell support)?

    Am I missing something? It still takes up just as much space on an ISO as it does on the internet. Keeping it on an ISO just means that everybody has to sit through "five hours" or how ever long it takes to download GIMP in your part of the world, regardless of whether you use it.

    Lesson learned: When making anonymous posts, use either a proxy, an anonymous posting service (COTSE.NET), someone's open WiFi connection, or a friend's computer.

    Alternate lesson: Find better things to do with your time.

    Thank you. I have some trashy people in my family who never pay any bill until the company is getting ready to disconnect service. (Not very bright, I know).

    So, I was curious what would keep such a person from doing that in the Netherlands.

    Actually, it is. I did assume that precedent is as big an issue in Swedish Law as it is in US law. I think I may have been wrong there.

    I think the problem is that R&D is good for long-term stimulus. By maintaining human progress, we are attempting to stock tomorrows shelves, and to provide our children with a few less broken windows. Unfortunately, it does not fit into an ROI equation, so it is hard to justify.

    Is it dishonest to try to pass off a long term strategy as a "holy hell, the apocalypse is nie!" reaction? Yes. But, doing so helps get an effective strategy off the ground. I won't lose any sleep over it.

    No, I didn't miss it. I disagree. In theory, that is how it should work, but I suspect that many of the precedents to be set will reach beyond just those cases in which the site brazenly promotes piracy.

    All this is academic in the case of TPB, because of the "in your face" way they reacted to takedown requests. Nothing will save them.

    It is unfortunate, then, that TPB will be setting the precedent for every other site.

    Not satisfied with killing software competitors by the Embrace, Extend and Extinguish methodology, now they are doing it to licenses. Pretty soon Apache license will be incompatible with everything non Microsoft, inlcuding Apache Web Server. Run, Run away when you still can!

    Compatibility rules don't work the same with licenses...could you imaging a judge saying:

    "hmmm...these two licenses are identical, but the one by Microsoft works differently. Microsoft is the bigger company, so I guess their version is right!"

    Oh, wait...

    You don't need SourceSafe at all to do any sort of .NET development. Subversion, git, CVS, etc. all work fine for .NET development.

    SourceSafe would be better off forgotten entirely.

    Agreed. It may mean there's nothing creative about it. Maybe this guy should lose his Christmas bonus, because he didn't "think outside the box".

    I suggest that, next time, he vote for the Senators. He should got to Halloween Express, buy some politically themed masks, and literally VOTE FOR the candidates. He can even put on an Obama mask and sign the bill after the vote. Now, that's thinking outside the box.

    ..no longer own our government. Time for that city's citizens to fire all the politicians (hopefully peacefully not by force), and rebuild the government from scratch

    I don't know if anything so big as the government should be rebuilt by _WE_ the people....Maybe we can find some other people who are little bit smarter than us...Maybe, _THEY_, the dutch, would do a better job. But, I'm a little bit worried about what the constitution would look like if it were rewritten today.

    Not only is that not geeky, it also adds an accomplice to the mix who you'll have to trust and hope they don't squeal. VPN FTW!

    I phones have GPS which could be tracked in a murder investigation. I don't know if they would, but if they thought to check that, you would be completely utterly screwed.

    Agreed. I think that some (if not most) major news channels should also have a history channel aspect to them. My favorite example was how after 911, people were saying "WTF is Afghanistan, and why are they attacking us?" Most news channels were simply parroting the political spin of the day ("Because they're evil and Islam is an evil religion full of smelly people")...

    It would have been nice if the news networks were doing documentaries on the creation of Isreal, the Palestinian conflicts, the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, and our subsequent alliance with Taliban insurgents (and any other relevant details that I may have left out). That information would have been less profitable (and would have led to inevitable accusations of bias and America-hating), but would gone a long way toward helping the public understand what is happening around us (which is supposed to be the point of watching the news).

    Ok...So, the government agency in charge of telling us how much oil is remaining lied to us about how much oil is remaining, because they were worried that it would start a panic. but we should believe there is plenty of oil remaining, because the businessmen who listened to this agency are placing low estimates on the value of oil, based partly on the information gathered from that agency.

    Furthermore, those who believe we should be looking for a way to become less dependent on oil should be investing in oil, under the assumption that we will always be dependent on the stuff... That's why I never vote for the same guy you're voting for.

    Absolutely. All death certificates now have a "Raped by Glenn Beck (Yes/No)" entry. Any entry marked "No" is taken to be a denial, which will be thoroughly investigated. Any entry marked "Yes" will be taken as evidence of guilt. Any invalid entry, such as illegible writing, invalid abbreviations, such as "N", entries left blank, or death certificates lacking this field will be interpreted as "Yes".

    Aaaaaaaand there's always someone who kills a joke by going too far. Congrats!
