I would think this will do wonders for gene therapies. This could possibly open up a bunch of treatments for various diseases if we understand the way the brain works better.
Good news!
Would this not be the equivalent of hiring a pentesting firm on an x basis to give you a detailed report of your security flaws?
This would give you your "root cause" I suppose -- and give management something else to berate their IT department over.
You know what, you're right. I'm in IT as well, (thankfully in a small business)
However, I'm sure in an enterprise "IIS failed because windows updates suck" wouldn't quite cut it.
Perhaps not, but even so much as having a defined procedure, and a thorough testing of IDS and perimeter firewalls should be a must. I agree, detective work is for someone else. Nothing wrong with being meticulously prepared =]
So, will we see another round of "The authorizing committees are free to set their agency budgets, and that includes NASA." - while attempting to get NASA heavily defunded?
This is somewhat scary, and makes little sense to me. I suppose that's the point? I'm Canadian, so not trying to pick a side of the road here, but it seems somewhat awkward that a person with an accomplished history of hating science is put into a science chair.
Is this strategy to make Obama look bad, so when they hopefully get a republican president they can swoop in and fix things?
(looking for education here -- just speculating as I am not well versed in the US political system)
You are self taught, to me this means you have a greater confidence in your own skills than someone who edged their way through school.
I come from a similar situation. I am a computer technician whom is self taught. At first, places were shooting me down left and right, what I did was asked for a skills-based interview; I proved my skills to them.
Anyone can get a piece of paper, but the skills you learned are invaluable. In your situation, build up a portfolio, and go into a workplace with confidence. Ask to speak to the manager, and pitch yourself to them, don't just submit a resume.
Hope this helps you.
I have tried a myriad of different things. Under the pillow, strapped to my leg, it just doesn't work for me. On the nights I am on call, I sleep on the couch. I would be interested to see different approaches.

Agent Smith: We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start. All that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known terrorist to justice.

You are evil. I like you.
Something new to blame my lack of endowment on! Thank you!
In a nutshell, pentesting.

I see no issue with being proactive, vs. Reactive. No sense in shutting the barn door after all the horses have ran out?

Wal-Mart could be 100% green, and it still will be just as aggrivating to be constantly asked if we want to get their damn rewards mastercard. -_-
