    I can use NetBSD, FreeBSD or Linux -- all of which have SMP capabilities to varying degrees ... so, why do I want to give Theo $ for something he could probably port --instead of hiring a programmer to putz around with reinventing the wheel?

    However, megacorporations -by nature of their international status- do not feel any moral obligation.

    Also, given the hefty $ handouts to the corporations from the government, it's not likely that any of them are giong to stand up for the little guy, either.

    What's good for the government, is good for the coporations, what's good for the corporations, is good for the government. We do not figure into it. At all.

    I haven't seen it since 79 (so take this with a grain of salt) but the original movie was good enough that I'd consider ordering it online, if need be. If you love the book, you'll like the movie.

    If you mean the second movie, with Lisa Bonet...stay far, far, faaaaaarr away from it. It's total dogshit.

    Great, I did not realise the extent of this problem, thank you for pointing it out to us.

    Now, what do you suggest? Writing letters to politicians who are funded by some sort of Special Interest of one sort or another? ("please, kind senator, vote against the people who are funding your campaign. pleeeeeeze..."). Vote The Bastards out ("Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!")? Start an petition online (snicker)? Violent revolution (Tianamen square, USA!)?

    In short, give with the workable -Viable answers, or just admit that we are, in fact, hopelessly fucked...

    Dragonfly BSD seems to be chugging along quite nicely.

    The further away they get from their 4.x FreeBSD roots, though, the more I wish they'd release an ISO. Particularly since the last ISOs for the 4 series of FreeBSD are probably going to be totally gone in a few months.

    Even in the realm of open-source databases, there are better choices. ... Anything that can be done with MySQL could be done as well or better with MS-Access.


    Since the first example you reached for was Microsoft that makes me wonder if there really are better choices in the OSS/database world.

    I had meant software cds, actually. As far as music goes, if you care and look hard enough, you can usually find and learn about indy labels -though at this point I really have all the music I'm interested in.

    Probably for the same reason that they don't switch to PostSQL -- massive investment of time in learning MySQL (we're talking years, here) which makes them hesitent to switch to an incompatible technology, and unable to do the heavy programming required to create a new branch from old MySQL code.

    If your intent is to foster contributions to your project, then aren't you in danger of losing that by allowing more liberal (and potentially, more closed) licenses to be used with your project?

    MySQL seems to be working well with perl, I don't see why they should encourage PHP (unless the developers of PHP want to play source with us in OSS land)

    Seriously. It's nice (esp since I just got cable), but once it becomes Yet Another Intrusive Tool, I -for one- will go back to reading and ordering cds through catalogs or buying them in person.

    The internet isn't a necessity, particularly if survellience becomes unavoidable.
