Political??
The only political class most MP3 sharers belong to is the lumpen-proletariat. There are very few exceptions.
[flame][sarcasm]...and the less of those scummy poor people we have, the better!!![/sarcasm]
Zappa's "we're only in it for the money" is written about and from the POV of the lumpen proletariat (who happened to be the members of the creative and political 'freak' movement--which the media later morphed into 'hippies'); Old punk (dead kennedys, mc5) were lumpen proletariat...and highly political as well.
The reason that liberalism lost it's relevency [sp?] is because the liberals became too academic and pendantic...allowing the christian right to come in and take over as the voice of the 'lumpen proletariat'.
So now, we have DRM, the DMCA and John Ashcroft using the constitution as his own personal toilet paper...yay yay yay![/flame]
1)Sell pre-packaged 'libre' software that anyone can download for free off the internet 2)??? 3)Profit! 4)SCO sues everyone in sight for dubious 'IP violations' 5)??? 6)Bankruptcy!!!...only in america....
Profit can be measured any number of ways. I think that the biggest incentive for most OSS projects is some form of "my name in lights" recognition factor.
For instance; OpenBSD Leader Theo De Raadt has to sell tee-shirts and cds in order to pay his developers. You could say that the OpenBSD project is a failure as it does not generate revenue. However, this is misleading as OpenBSD is the premiere free unix in terms of stability, reliability and having "no remote holes in the default install".
So, while Theo will never need to worry about finding a tax shelter, he does get to bask in the fact he is widely acknowledged [sp?] as being the 3l33+ of the 3l33+...and by that measure, OpenBSD is an unparrelled [sp?] success!
Had Nader not been an option, most would have
voted Democrats
or abstained.
You're forgetting option C of course (voting socialist or other left-wing party. Have you ever taken a CLOSE look at all the available canidates you have to choose from?). We'll ignore "C", though, for the sake of argument. Which leaves us with both of the options you have already listed.
Ergo, Nader drew votes away from the Democrats.
Except for those votes which-as you just pointed out- he drew into the election (because they would have otherwise sat that one out).
Now, I'm bowing out unless you want to continue this using your logged-in account.;)
...watching the musical! Seriously, doesn't this seem a little like 'great expectations' or something (only problem being I'm not sure if GE got made into an musical or if I'm getting it confused with something else.:-/)
And, as a result, I'm curious as to wether or not we'll ever see said mp3 player [and if so, in what way will it be crippled?]
Btw -- How on earth can someone have 2 terabyte[s] of non-pirated music files? "Fair Use"? [at that point, why not get a cd player?] Concerts? Where, exactly, do these come from?
It doesn't matter wether the votes are tallied electronically, manually or telepathically; if we have no [realistic] way to make the vote counters accountable, then it's all for nothing.
In other words, the problem isn't the mechanism, it's the implementers.

He was just before my time, but that has always been my impression too. Also that he was too much "mister smith goes to washington" (if I'm remembering the name of the James Stewart movie correctly). Basically, the presidency was too complex for him and politics too corrupt.
That's all impressions, however, he was before my time.
But his administration wasn't totally scandal free.
That I didn't know about...outside of the iran hostage crisis, which the republicans had their hands in and used [far too effectively] to make Carter look bad.
Correction; a vote for Nader was a vote for... (wait for it)...Nader.
No-one is guarenteed votes, no one is owed votes and the perception that votes "rightfully" only belong to one of two parties is a reflection of deeply rooted problems within our system of government.
The U.S. "Founding Fathers" seem to have put a lot of thought and effort to the task of offering protection to the sovereign Individual against the overwealming power of the state, an instutional entity. Now the (Large) corporation seems to have taken the place of the state or at least assumed a status co-equal with the state as a peril to the natural rights and perogatives of the Individual. It seems that the Corporation may in the end be the more dangerous threat. The worst excesses of the State are, at least in theory, held in check by Constitution, Custom, and Law. The excesses of the corporation seem to be subject relatively little control in theory, and almost none in practice.
That is because corporations are viewed as legal individual enities; with the rights of a person. Which is a situaion I don't believe the founding fathers had any way to predict or develop contingency plans for.
So someone modded you down a few times... I have had that happen to myself more than once - and the reason I'm posting this AC is to avoid getting a -1 Offtopic to my name.
I've got off-topic "to my name", as well as a couple of '-1 trolls'. They hang on the wall right along with the '+5 funny' and the '+3 insightful'... at the end of the day, i have fun, and still have "excellent" karma.
I agree that the grandparent post was flame-baiting, but hiding behind AC just for the sake of not getting a certain mod by your name is...well, it's crap, imho. At least it is if you're stating your honest opinion and not just stirring up shit.

You know, UFS may not be dying, but any compatability with Linux (mount -o ufstype=wtfthisweek?!?!?) is out the window.

in other words...SUCK IT UP.
There is no problem. All reports of problems are rumors spread by the coalition forces of trolls. I am not afraid to post and neither should you be!
I've no clue how they felt reading the headline, however.
I think it's likely that most /.ers had that exact reaction on reading the headling.
