I think there is some truth in it. In societies with a high gender gap, women are typically taught to be good mothers when men are more career-oriented. This not only make good mothers but also keep couples together because there is a real necessity since they have different roles. In societies with a low gender gap both women and men do the same thing. And in western societies where career is often more highly regarded than families values, there will be more and more career women and less and less good mothers. Problem is, the reverse is not true for men : they are still expected to be career oriented rather than become good fathers. And because both parents can function independently, there is less insensitive for them to stay together. Just look at what kind of example we give for "progressive" societies : almost always career women, almost never stay-at-home fathers. This is not a progressive society, this is a productivity oriented society with little regard for the family.
No but they lead the world in perfectionism. They tend not to be very creative, however, they are very good at making small improvements and fixing defects. So even if they don't create many breakthroughs, they are more than able to stay ahead in already existing technologies.
The fucking ATM's shut down every night.
You can now find ATMs in combinis open 24/7. Only traditional Japanese banks still do this, and I am not even sure. The Japanese banking system was broken, that's true, but since the arrival of foreign banks, things have improved a bit. One must keep in mind that Japan is a cash based society, and thanks to the low criminality, people can travel with large amount of it with little worries.
Japan is so advanced that fax machines still dominate the business world because they don't 'trust' email.
It is not about trusting e-mail. It is simply habit. Fax machines were and still are a lot more common than in the west and they just keep using them because it works. For personal communication, they use e-mail a lot more than we do because cell phones supported it since well before the smartphone era.
Japan is a backwards society that rivals China for how inefficient and anti-technology business can be.
Japan is not backwards and not anti-technology. They simply advanced in different fields because they have different needs and a different culture. As for inefficiency, I have to agree with you, and it is driving a lot of "gaijin" mad. They make it up with hard work (at least when the boss is looking) and a sense of duty unheard of in the western culture.
Well Japan is changing now, they seem to lose a bit of their identity, for the better or for the worse. For the economy, it is mostly a bad thing I think.
Drunk people can also overestimate their impairment, in fact we are terrible at estimating how impaired we are in any case, can be alcohol, drugs, fatigue or distractions. I think the underestimation bias comes from the experimental conditions. For example, if you are pulled over by the cops and they ask you, you won't tell them you are impaired, no matter how you really feel. And if you really want to drive, it is easy to persuade yourself that you can do it, even if it is unsafe, no matter what causes your impairment.
As for psychoactive drugs, they are all different but most of them are bad. Alcohol is terrible of course but most other GABAergic drugs (GHB, benzos,...) are likely to have very similar effects. Stimulants like amphetamines, cocaine and even caffeine may have a slight positive effect on motor skills and attention, however it is very likely to be illusory and make you overconfident. Hallucinogens are not a good idea, for obvious reasons. I don't know how Marijuana affects driving but you are certainly better without it. And no, you cannot compensate you impairment. Unless by "compensate" you mean "stop driving recklessly", and in this case, you shouldn't be driving recklessly in the first place.
Actually doing a playable game from start to finish is a lot of problem solving.
For example, let's say you are making a simple Touhou style shoot'em up. It is the kind of game that can be made by one person. In fact, all Touhou games are made by one person. You need to manage inputs, sprites, collisions, manage timing, etc... Without this there is simply no game at all. You will probably want to make the game interesting too, it means diversity in enemies and pattern, and sooner or later you will need some kind of data model. And once you have an interesting gameplay, you will probably want the little extras that make the game look finished, like menus, which are more time consuming that you might think. And thing do not always go smoothly and you will soon learn about the various pitfalls and your own limits. Now, that's for the development part, but you can also learn teamwork and stay in the game theme. If you are like many coders and suck at graphics and music, it is time to find an artist to help you, ripped graphics, geometric shapes and what was your favorite mp3 only go so far. Artists typically work differently from coders and there is a lot to learn from this cooperation. Also, unless you actually hired the artist, he is likely to be just like you and actually want something from the project, even if it is just for fun, so now you work for him almost as much as he works for you. And of course, nothing stop you to work on a game as part of a large team, but while it teach you a lot about cooperation you lose the valuable lessons of doing something by yourself from start to finish. Both are good I would say.
As for the "be entertained" part, if you start writing a game, you will soon realize that it is totally unlike playing the game. It is definitely fun but that's the point, right? In fact the only trouble with games is what the HR guys who know nothing about game programming or even programming in general think. But I'd like to say "fuck them", you probably want a better company anyways.
I have the pro version, no ads. Make sure you uninstall the free version after you get the paid one. Don't be afraid to try it out. Like with all play store apps, you get your money back if you uninstall it within a certain delay.
I don't think it is ES fault, at least not entirely. Newer versions of Android seem to have changed the way default apps work and don't let you choose by default anymore. To fix this, go to the the offending app properties (ES in this case), go to "open by default", and set "supported links" to "always ask" or "don't open". You can also clear the default from here.
State : Includes weapons, drunk driving, court offenses, commercialized vice, morals and decency offenses, liquor law violations, and other public-order offenses. Federal : Includes immigration, weapons, and other public-order offenses. Just read the linked article.
It seems that the conclusion is related to the Libet experiments. In this experiments, participants are asked to mark the time they decide to take an simple action (like pushing a button) then perform said action. Using ECG, he discovered that the motor cortex "prepared" the movement about 300ms before the recorded time of the decision. It implied that the decision wasn't conscious, suggesting that free will is an illusion. Needless to say, this conclusion is controversial.
Same reason it took pilots a long time to adopt them : Ego.
Most pilots I know put their ego aside when it comes to flying. Unlike doctors, they put their own life on the line and self-conservation instincts keep them in check.
No they aren't leftists, they aren't rightists, they are a single party. Left-right originated in the French revolution and referred to where deputies preferred to sit in the assembly. Conservatives tended to group on the right side whereas revolutionaries grouped the left side, moderates were the center. Having a left-right distinction implies an assembly, or at least some diversity of opinion. There is no such thing in North Korea.
Why do you think Google is? A charity? Do you really think Google gives things away expecting nothing in return? And unlike Apple (who sells hardware) and Win10 (which is paid for), your data and ads is the only reason why Google gives you Android.
As for Nexus devices, Google makes very little profit from the sales. It is not what they are for. They are reference devices, it is a way for Google to tell the world "this is how an Android device should be". And obviously, they don't want to leave out the data collection part, their real money maker, from their reference.
1) My paper has never experienced a fault while on the move. 2) My paper has more detail than your electronic maps. 3) My paper allows me to see more of the map at once.
4) My paper map is always here in the glovebox. Last time I used it, Google maps didn't even exist...
The extinction of humans would cause quite a mess, all domesticated species depend on us. Others, like rats, evolved to exploit the byproducts of human activities. In addition whatever could cause human extinction would probably affect many other species directly. Humans are very resilient and adaptable compared to other large animals.
What you pay for in scientific journals is the publishing and only the publishing, not the research itself. It used to be significant and useful work pre-internet. It involved typesetting, printing and physical distribution. You pay, that's normal.
Now, things have changed, a lot. Scientists do most of the typesetting themselves, and on the internet, there is no more printing and distribution is essentially free.
In fact replying with this video would strengthen Volvo's argument. Because beyond the branding, what it shows is that collision avoidance systems can fail and therefore, driver's attention is crucial. Tesla's autopilot is clearly sold as something that allows the driver not to pay attention, while the system demonstrated in the video is just a driving aid.
Some abhuman 'audience engagement metrics' weasel is already reaching orgasm somewhere at the prospect of being able to monitor biological responses to advertising with sub-second granularity.
I'd love to see the result of this research. Of course, there is a potential for evil, every advance does. However, knowing how biological responses are triggered with large scale experiments can give us many insights on psychology and psychiatry. Not to mention entertainment.
Optic cable is a bad idea : in addition to being expensive, it is also fragile and has a limited bend radius. Its advantages are also limited for a smartphone : it is great for long distance data transmission, which is not really a concern when your cables rarely exceed 2m, it also provides galvanic isolation (the reason for optical S/PDIF), but if the cable also has copper wires to transmit current, this is pointless.
The problem they have in Europe is due to historic dicounts/tax concessions on diesel, they became popular with tight-fisted motorists. Even though most of these concessions have been removed, the mindset of "diesel == cheap" remains.
No they haven't been removed. At least not in France. The TICPE, which is the main tax is 0.64€/L on gasoline and 0.50€/L on diesel. There is also a 20% VAT on the final price, which include said tax. As a result, gasoline is typically 20% more expensive per liter than diesel only because of taxes. When we consider that diesel cars are typically more fuel efficient, "diesel==cheap" is not a myth, at least for those who travel long distances.
So they created an unrealistic test with unrealistic expectations. It is like they designed the test to promote cheating, and oh surprise, manufacturers cheat.
Is is that hard to devise a test that includes actual driving?
Usenet works when people are well behaved. We used it at school and it worked great, because our newsgroups were private and you don't want to be too much of an asshole because you are communicating with the same people you meet IRL on a regular basis. On the greater internet, it is spamfest. Usenet got a surge in popularity because of alt.binaries were efficient filesharing platforms but real public newsgroups are pretty much dead.
Yep, very disappointed by the not exactly $350 Oculus Rift. OTOH, the HTC Vive may be a bit more expensive but according to someone who develops for the DK2 and who has tried the Vive, the additional controls and awareness makes a world of difference. On the DK2, he completely abandoned any attempt to use external controllers, too awkward, his game is almost entirely controlled by head motion. It is something I noticed too when I tried the DK2 : I couldn't see my hands, which is a bit disturbing, and more importantly, once you put the headset on, simply picking up a controller is a challenge.
I think we need to ask a lawyer for this one. But I know that trespassing is used by casinos to evict unwanted people like card counters. Card counting is legal but casinos are private properties so they politely ask you to leave because you are "trespassing". If you resist (which is stupid) and only in this case they can arrest you.

We like to think of Bumper ads as little haikus of video ads
If you have been reading the comments at Slashdot at -1 for the last few months, you probably know a haiku that fits perfectly.
