AP - 10/16/1999 Microsoft Purchases ALL Public Broadcasting Stations.
Microsoft has reported today that they have just closed a deal to purchase every Public Broadcasting Station in the free world for an undisclosed amount of money. Bill Gates speaking via video conference had this to say: "We are very exicted to announce this bold move into world of non-profit organizations. I have always been more interested in helping people than making money and I feel this will finally prove this to everyone. Americans have always said that they want more access to quality shows on TV and now we can offer help to them by providing the shows that they want to see!"
PBS will now be known as MSPBS and will be run by the former CEOs of Mindcraft and the Gartner Group. Some of the new shows to debut this winter will be:
Cooking with Bill: Watch Bill Gates make food with recipies stored on Win98.
Wild Kingdom : See young people survive in the jungle with nothing but their Windows CE devices.
Financial News Nightly: See how all of the terrrific innovations by Microsoft causes their stock to raise on a daily basis.
In an unrelated announcement Microsoft has changed the name of their new OS from Win2000 to Bob2000. Bill Gates was quoted as saying: "We really feel the name change will help our customers be more productive."
You bring up a good point. It's silly to try to have a "one size fits all" OS. I have to believe if MS had tried to compete on technical merit and tried to make an OS that could "play nice" with other systems that they would be more succesfull in the long run (if that's possible). They are brilliant when it comes to marketing, but they have missed the boat when it comes to the psychology of true geeks. They have built so much angst and distrust with the geeks that there is little hope of winning them over now. The *anything but Microsoft* sentiment is very strong and won't be erased by a few "good moves" my the boys in Redmond.
It's sad actually, with the amazing resoureces that MS has they really could be doing some brilliant things for the technology industry, instead they choose to waste so much effort trying to kill/block the competition.
1) the "Linux is the 'hype du jour' line. The MEDIA is resposible for the hype, that does not have a single shred of relevance on the quality of the operating system.
2) Also the whole Unix comlexity thing...come one.. it's like saying that books will never overtake movies in the entertainment department because it's so much more difficult to read a book. Pure Crap
3) The whole "the only reason it;s popular is becasue it's free blah blah blah" Well..I've payed for my last two copies and I'll continue to pay for them in the future. There are many reason that Linux has become popular, I'm guessing the low/free cost issue is a very small part of it. I'm guessing the fact that IT WORKS is a big part.
Why is so hard for some people to realize that there is plenty of room for different OS's.
I don't know why anyone thinks the computer industry should be spared from any sort of media hype. Maybe I'm cynical, but it seems that job of the media is to generate buzz...sell things..make a name for yourself..etc... why let simple facts get in the way. Anyways... I think the whole cyber-terrorism thing is pretty interesting, but hardly new. One of my favorite books is the Cuckoo's Egg by Clif Stoll. It's a bit dated now, but still an interesting read.
Maybe a little paranoia is good when it comes to this arena. While we strive to make computers easy for the "common man" we are also making it easy for the "common criminal."
Hmmmm... I went to the site and had a look at the RH rpm's and I'm a little miffed that they expect me to download and install 30+ packages. Why not at least put them into 5-6 larger ones. It would certainly make the process much easier.
Anyways, I'm going to give it a try, heck, maybe I'll write a perl script to automate the process.
What group of people are the best at deciding what is a "good" UI and a "bad" UI ? Should the test be a bunch of non-computer people, or a group of long-time seen it all computer type people. I work for a small software company and I can talk to two people in a span of 5 minutes with completely different opinions of our interface. I think (other than the basic commmon sense stuff) that what is "easy" or "intuitive" can vary from person to person depending on the type of person.
For instance... we have big giant in your face butt ugly buttons on our UI, designed to be stupid simple for the average schmoe who doesn't give a crap about computers, but just wants to get the job done. So I guess we have designed the software for a non-computer type person, in a non-traditional way. I'm sure the UI purists would go into a coma if they saw it... but does that make it wrong... or bad ?
I get a lot of comments from customers about how easy our stuff is, so I guess we have accomplished what we set out to do, yet many of our dealers have said they would like something that has a more *traditional windows look.* It seems that your better off being lemmings rather than trying to go your own way sometimes.
caller - "yes...hello..uh my MS-MIT kidney just stopped working...I need help"

tech - "Okay lets see.. we need you to first replace all of your other organs with MS_MIT Organs.. make sure to look for the Windows logo on the box."
caller (shouting with disbelief) "YOU MEAN I HAVE TO REPLACE ALL OF MY ORGANS WITH MICRSOFT ORGANS..."
tech - "Yes sir..We only support Bodies with all Microsoft organs...then you will have to re-install the kidney.. don't worry this is all very standard.. In the future when..er uh..I mean if your organs just stop for no reason all you have to do is try rebooting..then go ahead and reinstall them when that doesn't work"
Okay..so I've really been trying to not be so reactionary (is that a word) and maybe a little less paranoid etc... But..this really...uh.. really really makes me feel icky all over. I mean MIT is like the shrine for open source... anybody here ever read the book "Hackers"... It's all about the first generation hackers at MIT...all about the spirit of the true hacker, someone driven by the technology, the bits and bytes not the $$$ and stock options. MS just doesn't fit into that picture.
Sure I can understand the MS thinking...repeat after me: "MUST INFILTRATE HIGH TECH UNIVERSITIES" And I understand that universities need funding, but with MS it always seems more like the old payola scams from the 50's/60's. I'll give you a lot of money if you play these records on your radio station...
Why does MS remind me of a slimy politician.. nice suit..big phoney shit-eating grin.. perfect hair..all the right answers.. but you know they are just looking out one thing..and it's not you.
Ah well...at least I have a brain and I can still make an educated choice.
I remember when I got my first login prompt...I was jumping up and down while yelling YES YES YES.. My installation problems were actually very minimal ( it was RH 5.0 on an old crappy 486 ) but it was still a real thrill to see this "Linux thing" actually boot up. I think I stayed up about half the night just trying to figure out what commands did what.. how to get a text editor going..etc.. It was that night that I fell in love with Linux..(My last install of RH 6.0 on my new PC made me realize of how far they have come in a couple years, about a half hour and I was up and running...)
Anyways... good luck Jon..even though I still think your a bit of a poser..I wish you well with your journey.
Bah...I don't buy into the whoe language wars thing..course I don't have to worry about it cause I just use Perl..cause everything else sucks..especially Python. Now...I also like perl cause it runs well on Linux..I just use Linx cause everything else sucks..especially Apple/Mac. oh..and Amigas.. they suck too. Yep Linux rocks..course I use KDE on Linux cause everything else sucks..especially Gnome. Yep..I like GTK cause QT sucks. But I usually use the command line cause GUI's suck.
Now...I'm gonna go watch an old movie on my Betamax...cause VHS sucks.
You are correct, I'm sure they are thinking about many other things other than going after gangs of skript kiddies, but this is probably what John Q. Public wants to hear. I would guess they are concerned with international cyber-warfare as much as anything, but they don't want to scare the un-informed public so they say stuff like:
"We have a multi-milllion dollar computer center to rid the country from crackers to make sure you can safely buy books from Amazon.com" And the public reads that and feels good about everything.
OTOH, if they said:
"We are terrified that a third world country could initiate a form of cyber-warfare on us and wreak havok with our computers and we really don't know what to do, so we are building this multi-million dollar computer center to try to combat that and hopefully drive some competent people to come to work for the government...etc"
Well...you get the idea..They tell us what they think we want to hear, but I also think they can use this for recruiting purposes to get quality computer hackers to come to work for uncle sam. (Which is not a bad thing)
Oh the humanity...why why why..why do we continue to get these snide comments about Perl being difficult to read. ANY high-level language can be difficult to read if it's written poorly, and easy to read if it's done properly.... I write my Perl code just like I'm writing C ( style wise ) and I think it's VERY easy to read and follow. Hmph.
Now..python with all of those spaces etc... that's another story:)
Linux has been sort of a political tool for a lot of other companies. I really doubt that many big companies do many things because they are community minded, or because they really give a crap about promoting technology. Major companies do things because it will enhance the value of the shares of the almighty stock. So when the suits are sitting in the boardroom and they look at all of the positive PR that the Linux bandwagon is getting...uh..well..why not.
In reality I think that Sun would do just about anything to take away business from Microsoft.
Hehehe... just when you thnk it can't get any better. Oh boy... I just love the flag... the appeal to the share holders to petition for the freedom of MS..oh boy... I'm surprised they don't have a midi file of God Bless America playing. Poor poor MS... you are just soooo opressed (sp)
So what's next... are we going to see Bill Gates marching in parades and waving the flag... or maybe an ad blitz of Bill kissing babies and opening doors for little old ladies. Oh yeah..GOD BLESS AMERICA..sheesh... if MS has any freedoms taken away they will only have themselves to blame.
This is good news for Linux but I have no love for France Telecom. We (the software company I work for) did a custom veriosn of our porduct for them about 3 years ago and they completely screwed us. They constantly changed what they wanted and in the end there was almost a comlete turnover in personal who decided to just drop the project. Leaving us with a couple of years of wasted time and much $$$$$ lost.
My impression was that they were pretty clueless and that things were not going well for them. I hope things are different for them now.
Maybe I'm not the typical geek type guy... but I really have no desire to meet or date a geek girl. I mean...why would I want to date someone who is like me, I have always gotten the most from relationships with women who are very different from me. I spend enough time with my PC... I would rather be with someone who will expose me to new and different things.
I think it's a matter of computers being such a mainstream thing now, people like to banter about buzz words...breeding a lot of mis-information for newbies. But hey... it's easy and fun to do. Here's my verion of a buzz-word review of the article:
The new IBM strategy promises to open the world of high end computing by integrating the enterprise with a high end scalable server. The server holds great promise for thin-clients over the internet. People who use e-mail and AOL will benefit greatly. I felt it could have touched on the great benefits of middleware and Java with respects to Linux and chat-rooms, as well as Instant Messaging. SMP servers will now be able to offer enhanced unified messaging whith wireless critcal telephony technologies. Protocols such as TCP/IP and voice over IP will be a good example of enhanced modular services that should emerge from this object oriented technology. Perl is another example. The long term benefits will enhance the World Wide Web know as www or.com and should help web pages everywhere, also Windows NT and Y2K will see growth as a result. My only complaint was the glaring abscence of the Amiga and the G4 and SCSI drives with a MHZ and IDE.
I just can't warm up to the whole "thin client" idea. It seems to be a good idea for the sys-admin in some situations, but I really don't see it appealling to a lot of people. I can't see having my critical data on some far-away computer that I have to get from a lan or the net. If it's critical to my job I want that data on my box where I can get it at any time. I don't want to rely on a network connection.
Sun is also fighting some serious momentum from the application side. People will want MS Office in almost all situations. But hey...you have to give Sun credit...if they keep going up to the plate swinging they are bound to stumble on a great idea somtime.

Uh...so what planet are you posting from my cowardly friend??? Perhaps you should go back and actually READ my simplistic little post. My very simple and easy to grasp point was that you are comparing an open source operating system (Linux) to a non open source programming language, which makes no sense.
How anyone can get any FUD from that is beyond me.
This stuff just kills me. UH...like lets compare apples to oranges and throw a lot of really cool buzz words around and people will read our article. Brilliant on-line journalism...yeah.. cutting edge stuff here.
Comparing the success of Java to Linux is silly. Two different models..comp language VS OS..closed VS open..etc. Why...why..why do we have so much crap written out there..and why does/. link this garbage.
This isn't meant to bash MS...but they are the kings of mis-direction and marketing hype. Okay..so they can get it it to boot...I'll believe that. But does it run ??? Is it even close to being functional ?? Heck..they can get NT to boot on Alpha..but they pulled the proverbial plug on that because they couldn't get it anywhere near right.
So for me..this is just another story of the little boy who cried wolf.. after beign deceived so many times I refuse to believe anything that MS says until I SEE it.
Was it a difficult decision for you when you left ZZ Top. They were one of my favorite bands and I was really sorry when you left tnem. Are you planning a reunion tour someday?
It doesn't really matter what system it's running on...a system is only as secure as the people who administrate it...of course some are better than others:)
I would say we can lay full blame on the boys from Redmond until we hear otherwise.
It's true that NT is the most stable version on Windows...I am forced to user it at work and I rarely have to hit the reset button...buuut... By the end of the day this thing just moves like frozen mud...I can't imaginge what it would be like after a couple days...Also...sometimes I get a rasman error that forces me to reboot if I want to use outlook...so yeah..NT doesn't crash much..but it's hardly what I would call "robust". Course this is just my experience..
Meanwhile my Lnux box at home has been up for about 3 months with no noticable performance degradation. The Linux box is doing a lot more than my NT box is doing too. (Web server..development work etc vs word processing )It's funny, I never even think about bringing it down..
I do have to add that I just love it when MS stormtroopers say that if your NT box is setup properly and administered properly then you will not have any problems...sheesh...give me a break. Maybe that's why some people have a hard time believing anything a Pro-microsoft person says.. they are always blaming any problem that anyone has on cheap hardware..bad sysadmin..improper setup...etc... I thought one of the benefits of NT was supposed to be how "easy" it to setup vs Linux..sheesh...
