Why teach History? Few people need that in their daily life or jobs. Why teach music? Other arts? Science? Few people need Chemistry or Physics in their daily lives... etc.
Because Mathematics, like the rest, increase our fundamental understanding of the world around us. It's part of creating critically thinking individuals who have more to give back to society than a simple job skill they learned at an early age. Or at least give them the opportunity... take away fundamental education, they no longer have the choice.
"The NJTA also is suing unnamed corporations and individuals who may have helped distribute the stolen video. "
Exactly -- who stole the media to begin with, and why aren't they looking more thoroughly into their own security problems, rather than spit lawsuits? Why are they unnamed, but the video sites are put right out there publicly? Detract attention from the real problem? The above quote is the very last sentence from TFA, and the only mention of how the video was leaked...
Yea, but they're gonna lower the cost for "light internet users", or so they say. So you pay for what you use, and if you don't like it, use another ISP. Now lets hear it about monopolies and repressive governments...
rant you ain't seen nothin' bad till you see the "high spped" resident network at my apartment... they wad extra fibre lengths and stuff them into the most crammed slots... Paint clogs the jacks... latency of 3 seconds. to the router. I seem to recall being able to shoot myself in quake games... I'd be happy to pay $50 bucks for this dsl, but they have us on a 33k limited pbx, kinda killing dsl. And the cable is some wireless fed crap, most channels don't have audio. Now they claim up north that it costs too much... we can't even pay for better access.../rant
Why not start reading from the Project Gutenberg files instead, something that would support 'open' and 'free' concepts, but at the same time be useful and improving...
Are you concerned that tying yourself to Slashdot, a known haven for us *nix freaks that are generally hostile towards Microsoft's actions, will harm your chances of obtaining this position, as it would require that those appointing the position perceive you as "objective" ?
Take a look at the alien package ( apt-get install alien;)
It allows users of dpkg/apt to install Red Hat/Stampede/Slackware RPM packages by converting them into apt packages, then installing them -- version control is maintained within the dpkg system, and all the standard utilities (dpkg --listfiles, etc) still work. There's also an apt package for real's realplayer... you download the file from real.com, then use apt to install it -- no scripts, no junk.
The battle isn't RPM vs. APT, but in the implementation of and tools available for them. Alien makes RPM packages available under APT. Can i use deb packages under RPM?
Uh, so I can finally jail my aunt -- the one that only knows how to hit the "forward" button in AOL -- for her unsolicited relentless onslaught of "forward this to 20 people to support (insert random hippie political point here)..." crap?
From the changelog: "...Update versions to 1.5.2, leaving some references to 1.5.1 (as 1.5.2 is released as a rapid bug-fix release relative to 1.5.1)"
Rapid bug-fix... that pretty much sums it up. Lots of bug-fixes you shoulda already taken care of (telnet, sendmail, etc...) and the usual round of fixes.
Always nice to see the work on the BSDs continue...
but at least the US government is keeping advanced video technology out of the hands of those evil Taiwanese companies!! Tom's Hardware is in for heartbreak.
I'm curious... What are some better alternatives for handling domain registration, other than having a corporation in charge? What else would be feasible -- a government body? I think I'd prefer government in control of it, rather than a profit-motivated corporation...
Until I see Optimus Prime, I'm not impressed.
Anyway, the F14, and others, have wing positions that correspond to the speed/style of flight... more swept back for fast and aggressive, etc.
But damn it would be great for some Saudi pilot to see an F-22 morph into DeathScythe...
"...is open an opportunity for PC manufacturers to ship PCs with operating systems other than Windows, and to do so in response to genuine customer demand. "You mean I can't use my AOL account with XP? Well, give me a PC with Linux", that kind of thing."
Um, XP doesn't have AOL so give me Linux instead? From a segment of the population that think AOL has been 'erased' when they accidentally delete the desktop icon?? I think you overestimate the intelligence of our average friendly AOL users... and why just not get Win2k instead, if XP won't be able to use AOL?
Remember, both Microsoft's and AOL's strategies are to keep the end user as uneducated as possible... this makes it 'easier' for the user (less choices to customize and all...) and keeps them unaware of alternatives. Seeing a desktop in the store running Gnome with Enlightenment with all 'features' turned on would appeal to them (ohhh... shiney objects...), especially when sitting next to a winME/2k box with the comparatively bland Microsoft desktop.
It's amazing what google can turn up.
But, of course, we've already visited this kind of question on Slashdot.
Minneapolis must be hurtin something awful for directors... maybe even I could get a job there now...
As with any OS, it'll often be the apps that run on the machine that get cracked, not always just the OS itself. Now that apache, mysql, etc. run on OSX, the same vulnerabilities exist as for any other *nix running the same services. And lets not even get into the intelligence of who will be adminning the machine... almost all NT cracks are from extremely poor setups of the OS, ACLs, and services... OSX can suffer from bad adminning just like anything else.

and yes, many of these are available for win32. I'm sure they've been ported to other platforms, too...
Then install pdftohtml, or pdf2ps, or xpdf, or ghostview... funny how people thing pdf is adobe... it's like saying linux is redhat.
