I have used AltDesk since around 2001. It was the closest I could find to the old FVWM pager and easily allows apps to be moved from one desktop to the other.
They have been written up in the news before and the US Government bought up all their Rad Stickers at one point for use in Japan. Look at the Rad Stickers and the Nuke Alert device.
This was exactly Motos official stance on why they did this. They had to take it out, though, because they couldnt lock out outside vendors / accessories companies from making compatible devices.
Back in the mid to late 90s, Motorola tried this with their batteries for Cell Phones. The phone would check for an identity chip on the battery and lock out any unapproved batteries from the phone. They were forced to remove this 'feature'.
I'm not completely sure what you are saying, but its wrong either way -
As a standard employee, you pay something like 2.5% or maybe it was 5%, dont remember. Your employer pays the rest of the tax. If you are self employed - either as a 1099 or a corporation, the company you have contracted with does not pay ANY of that. You pay it.
Additionally, if you look at a schedule SE, you calculate the full amount out. You are then entitled to a deduction in which you only have to pay half of this.
This isnt exactly true - you pay 1/2 of the self employment tax (the above mentioned percentage). Additionally, this tax is only applicable upto $87,900 - anything after that isnt taxed.
Something else to keep in mind as a contractor is if you are doing a 1099 or if the company will pay you corp-to-corp. Its roughly $100 to incorporate (at least in my state). There are also quite a few benefits if you do incorporate. Anything that you can justify as a business expense becomes a write-off.
One major advantage to incorporating is that your company is being hired, not you and there is a level of protection from being sued - you, as an andividual are not liable - they cant come after your house or car or bank account.
Also, any health insurance you pay for also becomes a write-off. I believe its 70% the first year and 100% every year after. Depending on if / how you incorporate, this can also be paid from your company.
There are many things to consider here and it can be quite beneficial, but you should do your homework and see if this makes sense for you. You will also want to get a good small business accountant - ie an accountant who deals primarily with small businesses and not individuals who will be able to better advise you.
Most metropolitan areas employ progressive traffic signals in that the greens will light up slowly along a major artery in a row facilitating the flow of traffic.
If we start changing signal patterns during rush-hour in major areas because some jackass was speeding, we are going to severly tie up traffic.
Anyone here in the US drive in VA near or around DC or in a major city such as Chicago? Its all they can do to get traffic to flow to begin with.
To me, law enforcement has to do with punishing the offender, not everyone else who needs to get to work in a reasonable amount of time who is stuck next to or behind said offender.
This smells of typical American justice where we implement laws and enformcent to deal with a few idiotic people in the minority, inconveniencing or otherwise limiting those of us who normally follow the law and dont need to be baby-sat our entire lives.
Lest we forget one of the more defining attributes of human beings, it is our desire and ability to go forth, further than others before us. To endure and survive hazardous situations and environments. Our desire, our longing and our need to travel beyond all boundries. To set foot on foreign soil, to physically see with our own eyes, to touch with our own hands, to triumph over nature and the elements as a Human Being.
We, as a species, desire to travel beyond the stars, not in the form of a robotic surrogate, but as a physical creature. We must explore, we must experience and we must bring forth the human race to new lands.
For space exploration and travel to mean anything to the masses, we must have first hand, physical testimony of what lies beyond. Without it, the meaning is lost to all but scientists.
I acknowledge and agree with most of the comments here, but I think there is a difference in the comparison. I'm not discussing how things should be done, but the normal practices I observer while driving on a daily basis.
Keeping both hands on the wheel - When was the last time you actually saw someone with both hands on the wheel. Seriously. If I had to give a percentage on a normal basis I'd say its around 35%.
Passengers knowing when to shut up - I dont know who you're friends are but most of my friends dont know when to shut up to save their jobs, let alone when they are becoming a distraction. One is in the backseat flipping through CDs. His girlfriend is trying to pass up something to the front, the passenger is babbling on and on. It just doesnt happen.
More heated discussions on the phone - So, you've never had your girlfriend decide that this is the perfect time to argue over something? When on the phone and the call gets too heated for me to drive, I can hang up. Try telling your gf to shut up in the middle of an argument!
Plus, all of this focuses on conversations with others. The main point I am making is that people do equally if not far more distracting things while driving the car on a daily basis!
I am hard pressed to see the difference between talking on a cell phone and talking with passengers in the vehicle. Watching how people tend to interact, I'm imagining someone swiveling all over the seat while talking to several people in the car. I am also hard pressed to see the differecnce in someone dialing a number and changing the radio station, or searching for a CD.
Yes, cell phones can be a distraction, but are they any more of a distraction than the many, many things people do in their cars? I watch people read the paper across the steering wheel, I watch them put on makeup, I watch them eat entire meals, I even watch them search around the backseat of their cars - All while driving. If you take a hard look at what a lot of people do in their cars, cell phones are by far the least of the problem.
There are a lot of places people dont need to be talking on their cell phones - Movie Theaters comes to mind as a prime example. Because of this I believe its become quite the trend to frown upon seeing anyone on a cell phone any time. The reality is they do have a place and they are here to stay - get used to it.
By putting my garbage on the curb, I am showing that I am complying with the citie's health and sanitation laws. They do tend to frown when I leave it in the middle of the living room to rott and fester. Plus the neighbors begin to complain about all the flies at the door.
Personally, I happen to disagree with this, and its one of the reasons I am thinking of going to law school in these down economic times, to fight this new deluge of laws that is slowly erroding our Constitutional rights.
Being in a free society, the job of law enforcement is by very definition DIFFICULT. The idea is we would rather see 5 criminals go free than one innocent person behind bars. Somehow, in this current age, we seem to have gotten it backwards and routinely people are believed guilty until proven innocent and the police are given free reign, because after all, they are only trying to protect us. (Reminds me of that old line - We're from the government, we're here to help)
I found nothing "self-rightous" about my advice. You posted an opinion based on semi-defined statistics and I challenged you on it. Granted, my last line was a smart-ass way of saying I didnt think your figures held water.
Gun control tends to be a very heated topic and I frequently discuss it with people. Unfortunately, most people tend not to look up any facts and throw out these statements daring you to challange them, especially with the "think of the children" defense.
That having been said, I do applaud your re-checking your facts, coming clean on them and posting a link. It is a quite suprising and refreshing thing to see, as refreshing as someone who actually discusses things from research!
> given the importance of not having holes in the heads of kids, and the frequency in which these accidents occur (much more than any other gun-related death)
Put your money where your mouth is - back up that statement with some cold hard facts and research, because I cant find the facts to back that up.
And just remember, 72.5% of all statistics are made up!
I work for a consulting firm and 89 of us got laid off.
The rest of those left are getting a 2-day all hands meeting which usually entails a great meal and open bar somewhere. Oh, and all flown in from all over the country.
Personally, I would rather have seen them skip the all hands meeting and let a few people keep their jobs for the holidays!
BSA: We need to see licenses for all your software.
Me: This is an open source shop, but if you tell me which open source license you would like to see...
BSA: We at least need you to run this auditing software.
Me: Hmmm, seems kinda pointless, but what the hell. Do you have a Linux version?
BSA: No. You will have to remove your Linux OS and install an MS based OS that we do support.
Me: You want me to do what?!? Get the !&@$#%*@$%^& outta my sight!
Having worked for the big M in the past, this move does not surprise me at all. Motorola occasionally sees a need to be filled that they do not have the capability to handle or the time to ramp up, and buy it. The saddest part of all is that after their need is filled, they typically either split up or dissolve the company.
I would start saying bye bye to codewarrior, but then again 3COM does buy a lot of those dragonball processors for their Palm platform. It will be interesting to see how this all works out.
This really makes me laugh. Every Frat house at the college I went to had extensive files of notes, homework assignments and exams dating back many many years. The dorm I lived in had similar, although not nearly as comprehensive. This just levels the playing field for the rest of us.
I think it is time that the Professors realize that the undergrads are not there to support the Professors little pet projects at any given time and that these same professors start getting off their duffs and doing what they are supposed to and coming up with new and exciting content to teach these students who are paying good money to get a quality education.
The first thing that comes to mind after reading this is that they are searching in the wrong areas. I have friends all over this country from college and the variety of "interesting" things I receive in any given day can be astounding. To put it lightly, a lot of my friends are quite frankly "dirtly little bastards" and they do not always remember where to and where not to send things, especially if I have my bigfoot account pointing to work. What you are going to find is that some people have very little control over what their less than busy friends send them.
The second thing that comes to mind is, what are they really looking for? How many people do you know that actually get porn through their e-mail? Are they perhaps looking for people who may not be too happy at work? I would say that if it was me, I wouldnt want to work at a company that was so interested in whatever drivel I have going out in my personal e-mails, or even for that matter one in which I wasnt allowed to have personal e-mail.
The final thought that comes to mind is that I really gotta get my friends to start using PGP a little more often;-)
I started using Slackware when I was a Comp Sci major in college. My first kernel was 1.1.57 if I remember right and I had to learn quite a bit to get it running. All told, I think it took me a week and a failed exam to get my system completely up and running, including X.
I have thought about trying Red Hat, and I appreciate all they have done to help bring it into the mainstream, but a couple things have always kept me from doing it. I like the fact that with Slackware, everything isnt just prettied up into a nice rpm and ready to go. I need to make decisions about where things go, and how I want them configured. I need to actually read the README files and ensure I have what I need on my system, and this helps keep me fresh on whats out there and what is current. I also like the directory layout and other configuration layouts of Slackware.
While I have in the past (and will in the future) suggested Red Hat to some people, anyone who really wants to jump in and learn whats going on, I always suggest Slackware.
I just picked up a refurbished Connectix QuickCam from Computer Geeks for $39. It plugs into the parallel port and I found drivers for linux which work quite nicely. (I recommend cqcam).

Isnt this the guy that did Llamatron 2084? Besides being frickin hilarious, it was one of the best ports I had ever seen of Robotron for the PC!
