One of the nice things about Stardock's new Galactic Civilizations II game, besides it just being ridiculously fun, is that there is no CD copy protection at all.
Einstein once said "never memorize what you can look up." As the number of things we can look up via Google and other technologies goes up, the number of things that need to be committed to rote memory decreases.
You see this in history too: Before writing was invented, people had much longer memory spans. Greek bards could recite the entirety of Homer's The Illiad aloud. With the invention of paper, people no longer had to memorize the whole thing, and so they didn't, and instead used that time and brainpower for other things.
If you want to call that becoming dumber, so be it.
Convergence devices are, in the words of (I believe) Peter Rojas, a single concentrated point of failure. Right now, if my MP3 player breaks, I send it off to get repaired, and I'm deprived of the use of my MP3 player for a while.
When my convergence MP3 player/cell phone/camera/video recorder/Tivo/PDA breaks, I lose pretty much everything.
Also, with a convergence device, if want to upgrade one part, I have to upgrade/change everything. The new device might have a better MP3 player, but a worse PDA OS. With separate devices, you just upgrade the functions you want.
I'm not trying to be a troll here, but of what possible value is a really big prime number? Is there any practical value to it, or is it just an interesting bit of trivia?
I've noticed a parallel between the BSG space battles and the classic computer game Homeworld. The tiny fighters, the camera work, and the music all line up. Even from an emotional standpoint, the destruction of the 12 colonies and the destruction of Kharak seemed very similar.
South Carolina, and, I'll bet, other states, make traffic webcams available on the internet. I want something like this, but with actual video (instead of stills apparently taken at random intervals) and on my Clie. That way I can actually see the road conditions/traffic congestion and decide where and whether to change my route.
Are you saying that requiring drivers to have some minimum requirements before driving is corrupt? It's quite a stretch to compare Nazi death camps to a 15 minute basic competency test.
(I won't argue on income taxes, especially when most of the money goes to either poor people or airlines/other industries depending on who's in power)
Why would Wendy's spy on McDonalds? Everyone knows that Wendy's makes, by far, the superior fries. Now, Burger King might look to McDonalds, because they haven't made a good fry in recent memory.
The palm pilot is absolute gold when it comes to time management. I'd especially recommend buying Datebk5, as it lets you choose different colors/icons for different categories of todo's. It also lets you put the todo's in the date book, showing up on the day they're supposed to be done, or a few days earlier if you prefer. The best choice for the power user, IMHO.
"that the series is largely an exploration of Lucas' rather exclusivist and no terribly enlightened religious beliefs...you can't not talk about this."
Yes, but a *good* movie will, in the long run, make *more* money than a bad one will. For example, I've seen the first Star Wars movie several times, while I refuse to sit through Episode Two ever again.

That's fairly elitist, and not a very good proposition anyway. How does that work, exactly? Universities say, "Oh, Billy Bob is here, we'd better shut down our website!"
If anything, the internet is being dumbed down by l33t gamers more than by country folk.

From the article:

They got into legal trouble. According to Brighthand the Pilot Pen Corporation sued them in 1998 for trademark dilution.

No *WAY*!
public libraries are killing bookstores
free soup kitchens are killing restaurants
taking hikes is killing gymnasiums
broadcast tv is killing cable

I like it.
E-Mail is just as secure as a postcard. Don't send secret information via either one.

Although you'll probably want to sedate them first.

Why should I vote for you if you won't even follow basic laws like paying your income taxes or getting a driver's license?

So, what do you do when evil is fighting evil?
See, I thought this would be about some sort of left-handed version of Grafiti for the Palm OS. Then it would make sense for this to be on /.
