I had this exact requirement for building my point of sale device. My solution was to go with something like Damn Small Linux and modifying it. Basically, I altered it to be apt enabled yet again instead of using their package management and then pointed it at the debian repos. One apt-get install later and I had everything I needed to host a.NET GUI application. You could probably get away with a minimal debian install as well, but DSL and its brethren generally have good package selection for smallness.
Are you kidding me? I do this stuff for a living on the expensive tools ( Allegro, PADS, etc) and if I was caught whining about 3x4 inches, I would be ridiculed:)
With that said, what exactly it is that you are wanting to do that takes up more than 3x4 inches. Is the fab shop you are using so low tech that you can't do a 4(mil trace) & 4(mil space) board and therefore are unable to properly place/route the board? Also, how many nets are we talking about here that you would need an autorouter? Are you using any BGA packages? How many layers is the design? Do you have any controlled impedance requirements? Differential pairs? Your post is so very light on details. More than likely the other linux tools aren't enough for you because you want the software to do it all for you (eg. requirement: autorouter). Having used KiCAD and having looked at gEDA, those tools are more than adequate for the hobbyist. The only places where they wouldn't be adequate is if you had some sort of project deadline and you have a couple thousand rats to kill that of course are all bowties on a dense monster of a motherboard that is already going to require you to spend DAYS just splitting the ground and power planes to get the damn board connected. If you are doing shit like that, then I would highly recommend that you get into the niche market, buy some software like PADS from Mentor, and do the boards quickly. Otherwise, quit whining! To hand route a 3x4" shouldn't take long at all depending on density and layer count.
http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2005/9/27/95759/4240 -- just be sure you have millions upon millions of dollars and at least twice the amount of time you really need. Other than that, it should be a simple deal!
Its sad, but I only sleep around 4 hours a night. I have a nasty insomnia problem where I simply have no desire to crawl into bed. I dunno...i am a freak perhaps. But I find that if I don't eat breakfast I will have _no_ energy for the rest of the day. Also investing some money into mt. dew and/or (insert favorite redbull-like drink) tends to make dealing with idiots early in the morning bareable. Other than that, I just am busy stimulating my mind in one way or another and I find it _very_ difficult to stop thinking and so i just lay in bed thinking the night away (mind you just 4 hours) and it takes me a good 2 hours in the morning to fully become alive. Then the rest of the day i am just peachy. Anyhow. Its 3am...i need to get my 4 hours in before work and then class.
Ehhh so I will lose a point or three of some karma. But i believe EVERY/.er should read this (not the baby part unless you want to cringe:) because there is an idiot born every minute that buys into these trolls. personally the trolls have overrun/. so i swapped to kewro-5-hin (haha el reg) but people need to be informed about the trolls lest they become the trolls next supper:)
Maybe it is just me, but why don't you people use GNU/Linux and compile in tmpfs support. It IS a RAM disk, but you have a lot of flexibility with it and speed. Not to mention, forget the downtime issues when you have a *nix at yourside:) Load up your PC with 2 gig of RAM and you are set.
Well if people stopped using silly IE or retarded Opera and invested a little time into compiling mozilla then we wouldn't need to worry about pop-ups with a handy little option added to prefs.js
Maybe it's just me, but ornithropter reminds me too much of a combination I used to love dearly. Cast Enduring Renewal; Cast Ashnods Alter; Cast Ornithropter; Sacrifice Ornithropter to ashnods alter to gain two generic mana, return ornithropter to hand because of enduring renewal; repeat action until you have about 30000000 mana and then cast fireball.:)
I barely watch TV anymore anyway, and Battlebots was one of those shows I did watch. Upon hearing this and exploring into the matter, I for one will not watch that show anymore. I disdain "Money grubbing media corporate executives" (a direct quote from my email to their feedback email address) and refuse to participate anymore as a viewer. Instead I suggest that/.'ers watch junkyard wars (or any other engineering-like show) and NOT watch Battlebots. We as the consumer have the power. Let's excersize it!
I do tend to believe that slaves are only slaves as long as they want to be. The issue is not home person use. MS doesn't make a large chunk of their money from home users, its corporate america. These companies have their entire desktop infrastructure based upon MS. If they could no longer have in house computers built and delivered to match the homogeneous network it would put a massive crinkle into how efficient their combined force would be. And even tho you can smooth those sorts of kinks out with Samba etc. it still doesn't replace all of the proprietary SMB MS shoved into its OSes. These corps. are willing slaves to MS because of the desktop.
"but law enforcement needs a way to tap into criminals' Internet traffic"
And let's remind ourselves that not everyone that uses encryption is a criminal. Personally, I think the government has no right to interfere with cryptology (considering most of the latest and greatest algos are from out of the US). And if the government wants to sniff something, they can sniff my hairy white ass.

Asses it seems. I still wonder why it is people so strongly rely upon MS office "products", especially when there are viable alternatives like paying cheaper licenses to SUN for StarOffice. Or hell, compiling up and using OpenOffice. I will be jumping for joy when OpenOffice reaches the point that Mozilla is at now. It (OpenOffice) is getting to the point where is it useable for mild uses, still buggy, but it works great if all you need is to view MS formats (like.xls).

Why is this interview pertinent? Dear god the first question NVDIA responds with corporate bullshit, and vague talk of the topic as if the NVDIA interviewee had no clue what it was. Humus then goes on to ask really great questions involving implementation of specific features, etc and NVDIA practially shoots him down with a generic bullshit answer like "We are always interested in supporting wide spread accepted APIs" Not a good read. Don't read it.

What the generation before us(Baby Boomers) doesn't understand is that we kids that grew up in the eighties and nineties have really grown up with this technology. There is no wisdom involved besides experience. Raw intelligence is so readily available now that all it takes is a little research ( an hour or two ) and you can accomplish anything by following a how-to, man or info page. That is a strange concept to our parents. What we have to remember is that we need to respect those older than us, because someday we will be in their shoes and our next generation will be ten times as smart as us.

Why are we still working with "boats" why not look into developing matter transporters? I agree with the damage that could case to marine life. Hell even air planes are a risk because birds get sucked up into the engines. Perhaps these fast boats are the solution. And I think Airships should have been furthered as vaible transport.

Maybe I am just being cynical, but I don't like the idea of "secure" formats anyway. It's silly to think anything is secure. SDMI was only lasted a few months before being cracked. Its all about marketing in the world of windows...

And it will avoid the DOJ thoroughly.

Information is always documented in some form or another. How do you plan on creating this database of info without giving credit where credit is do? And usually that involves money to the parties in which you "borrow" information from, especially in a publication.

If slashdot editors would just take two minutes to google around, they would see that this was a WORLDWIDE event covered by local media all over. http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=scientology&btnG=Search+News returns over 2300 hits.
