400 bucks a pop? Jeebus! that is cheap! Just think about the possibilities. Cheap webservers. Cheap ogg machines. Maybe a cluster? The hackability will be incredible. Can we say 2.4.0 kernel? A nice machine to take to lan parties and run it as a dedicated server. I know that I for one am buying one of those just to tinker with.

This article is ridiculous, considering certain key passages. Most of these stories have some sort of very special circumstance, that makes that person the victim. Not to mention, he has no hard facts or statistics, just a bunch of e-mails. Now the last time I talked to my english professor (Ph. D), the basis of an argument must have a solid foundation and the source must be credible(The Structure of Argument, p6). I consider e-mails that probably left out important facts and figures to be a credible source. I deem this FLAMEBAIT. He is trying to stir people up and soon we will have all sorts of looney's posting about how large institutions like CRAs, the government, big business, are horribly out of control and severely lacking any checks and balances. Why do people let this man write? Why is he so biased?

This guy wants to use Mac OS because MS anything is "prone to crash" Well I have seen a few of those frowny Mac faces in my time, this guy is looney to think his Mac Server isn't prone to crash. He should use a *nix and be done with it.

You all know that one scene in the movie Independence Day where they go underground into Area 51, and the genius' father politely points out how funding is possible... "What? You dont think that a hammer costs fifty-thousand..." But seriously, where do you think the NSA gets their funding from? It's ridiculous. We have starving homeless people in this nation and the NSA has installations that must cost well into the millions. For god's sakes, what is our government afraid of? It's amazing that our nation was based on certain principles such as if your government is not handled properly that the people have the right to change it. Yet at every turn all I see is how restrictive our government is and how agencies like the NSA will stop anything that would dramatically alter this nation. People that think we live in a democracy need to become aware of the socialistic self perpetuating republic of indirect control that is the US. Anyways, I will get off my soap box now.

I agree whole heartedly. Next thing we see is a press release that congress just passed a bill that says our national OS is based on a kernel that crashes for no reason. And then the next point they make is "Rebooting is OK". Dear god...

It is a better solution than the US government has come up with. If you break up MS into the OS and applications then it will still be MS...just the application company will have a different label(But will have written all over it "Microsoft Windows only"). And I disagree with not releasing the source code. That would make me happy. Have MS come join the Open Source community, and see how long they last hehehe. If that did happen, I can see wine supporting EVERYTHING, heh. Just one last thought. Linux != MS haters. MS has been innovative and it provides users with a computer experience a little more advanced than Mac OS. But I still say... "Real Computer Nerds Use Linux"

Its a joke lol. I was proposed with similar challenges in highschool, most of them involving by-passing censoring software for browsing the internet, getting pass the firewall from the outside to get into the main database(where transcripts are), and gaining internet access back in classrooms where the school crippled the network. Schools fail to understand or properly educate faculty in what computers are and what can be done with them. Instead of punishing this kid, they should have hired him on as a security consultant, and they should have fired the teacher for being inept. They just don't get it.

I would just like to say to the "script kiddies" of the world--YOU SUCK. God, it took me 4 hours to fix my damn system. Using pitiful log cleaners and then leaving a paper trail as long as the Nile, my old FTP server was exploited. It was sad. I caught them within 4 hours of being rooted. I quickly patched the hole(sometimes I wonder if I am an idiot) and quickly started on a firewall project, which I finished later that night. For all the other people that have been rooted, I feel for you. And my advice to sys admins, watch your systems, little things like load averages can point to a break in.

It is simply amazing how we can program operating systems that do miraculous things, but lack the ability to program adequate software that blocks viewing of the things congress wants. Perhaps if the government invested money into a development program that can work on software that meets its criteria all of us would be happy, and the ACLU wouldn't be throwing lawsuits into the courts. Because, frankly, I agree that current blocking software is not properly written. It should be more dynamic and "read" the page before it is viewed. Forget scanning just the URL, try looking at the whole page. Okay, I am off my soap box.

The more I read the more I feel like I am in highschool again. In fact I went back and visited my school for the first time and it was a trip. I was the odd man out. I was the computer nerd, but I can tell you that my name will be more strongly remembered than any football player my sr. year. I stood on who I was and I made a difference. I left behind some underclassmen that are now respected because they are following my footsteps. I broke the mold. In visiting those people(ie. my teachers and friends i left), it really gave me an out of highschool glimpse into how highschool really was. I have grown and changed beyond it. And all of those people who think highschool is life have sooo damn much to learn. I pity them. For it is not an easy transition from HS into the real world. If you are a HS kid who doesnt fit, make your ripple in the world in the most positive way possible. The results will be more rewarding than some jock catching the winning pass for a TD.
Since I used to live in texas I think I can vouch for the population in denton. There is nothing there. Denton the city is a college town filled with non-voting college students who are very liberal(its a music school) People worried about privacy should go live in New Zealand or something. Its just your name for buddah sakes.
Personally...I am not offended if someone does a scan of my system because i scan other peoples systems (my friends included) just to see what is out there. I mean, why implement wonderful things like FIN and SYN into the RFC if they weren't meant to be used. But do I continue once I gain access of any kind? Of course not. Just because someone's front door to their house is unlocked doesnt give you permission to enter. Most of the time I will just email the admin(most of the times a friend) and let them know they have a security hole that needs to be fixed. So many times I have scanned systems and see silly mistakes like having X listen on port 6000, or leaving netstat or sysstat running on some 500 port which could be a possible security risk. Internet security shouldn't be taken lightly, alot of people in this world see it as a challenge and therefore their ethics are skewed and have no problem turning your semi-secure system into a/dev/null.
My... I wish I had been a/.er when the compilation of hellmouth was taking place. My life has always been one of hell and not fitting in. I eventually found my place and others can too. I don't wish to say anymore since this article really hits close to home and hurts quite a bit. I for one support Hellmouth and I will be glad to donate any funds i have to getting this out into libraries and bookstores.
The protocol is already widely used and there are so many open servers out there that have no association to napster(tm) that it is ridiculous to think this will slow down the exchange of music across the internet. It will only take time for all of those windoze users to figure it out and get napigator or some other variant. If you are looking for alternatives then by all means go to napigator.com or run a *nix and get gnapster, knapster or even the CLI based napster client because all of them have OpeNAP support built into them. But I have a feeling that the P2P networks are gonna feel a strain from the swamp of 56k-ers that are gonna flood the net since they are seeing napster go away(or free anyway). Only time will tell. I for one am staying underground and I am not paying a single dime for something I can get for free. If an artist wishes to break out of the record label regime and run things different..hell I will pay a buck for a cd of mp3s. I reward innovation.
Why yes all of these are good, very good, questions, and I can answer all of them in one word... "Strategery"... now ya'll run along now I gotta go huntin' with pa(He was an american president) Vote for me!
Since becoming the age of voting I have always felt the politics was only picking the lesser of two evils, being limited in my political choices, and a feeling of pointlessness in voiting since the electoral college decides who is our figure head anyhow, but with all of these issues of the government sticking their nose into the internet and issues dealing with free speech, it has become apparent that I DO need to vote. I only have positive things to say about this article. It raises awareness that we as netizens generally lack. Despite the limited control I have on this nation, I need to exert as much control as I am given to attempt to make a difference. I for one do not want to have my future children growing up in a world where the internet is taxed and freedom of speech and expression is limited online. Okay that is all:)
