Actually, the razor analogy only kinda works. Razors, like the Mach 3, are patented not copyrighted. What lexmark should have done is patent the connection between cartridge and printer. That would have provided far more protection then this stupid DMCA crap.
Are you talking about chimps or or monkeys. Chimps are in the ape family and are NOT monkeys. In the article they talk about monkeys but the animal in the picture looks more like a chimp. I went to several news sites but That image is the only one I could find.
It's more like getting Windows bundled when you buy Office. I still don't see this. If I buy software designed to run under OS X I cannot expect it to run under a different OS. The same goes for windows, there is no Bundling or Product tying going on, they are developing software to run under the windows api. No matter what Wine does it's still an ugly hack to get non-native software to run under Linux.
And hey I have no problem with reverse engineering the windows api. Though from your comment it still looks like Wine requires some actual windows components which could possibly put them in a legal grey area if MS really decided to pursue the issue.
I don't see how this can be construed as bundling as I sure did not get Office when I bought windows. I was free to get ANY office suite I wanted. This just means they are limiting it to working on the platform itwas designed for.
Put it this way. I am sure they don't test it under wine (well maybe they do but not to make it work better), and they won't support it under wine. Since I can get wine working on a linux box with out purchasing a windows license and wine uses win32 dll's to enable it to run non native software I have one question, where did those dll's come from and am I legally allowed to use them. I remember older versions of wine when you needed files from the windows cd, but now you don't? It is a question as I don't know the answer. I don't run windows apps on my linux box as its just a server.
Gee I wonder, Maybe because thats what the software was designed to run under. MS Does n ot have to make it easy or even possible for it's apps to run under wine.
When was the last time you had mac software that was lacking in features or usability?
Well let's see how about OS 7 - OS 9 oh and we can add that joke of an OS, OS X not the version it is at now but the one they initially released. can you honestly tell me OS X was ready to be released when it was. Even Pixar did not switch till many things were fixed. As for current software I am not so sure as I run a retail business right now and there really is a very limited amount of software for the Mac platform that handles point of sale. Now I am sure that some one will pipe up with some but really there is nothing out there that can handle what I need.
And besides iLife what else besides Adobe, Macromedia, and MS products fits your description. Are you saying that there are no crappy shareware type apps for the Mac, I bet there are a thousand people on slashdot that will prove you wrong.
oh and by the way, I was saying you were arrogant for saying you can write software that's better then what the users want.
Until you get Macs in the work place you won't get them into the majority of homes. People like to use what they know, and if you use a computer at work it is most likely an x86.
Find me a decent POS software package that handles inventory control, purchasing, time clock management and payroll then will talk, but really these very boring but necessary pieces of software are what is needed to bring the Mac out of obscurity. Plus it needs to lose the hipster, I'm better then you attitude perception that people have.
Why is this on the frontpage, this seems more like I would see it in 2600 or Blacklisted 411. This is not worthy of the frontpage of slashdot. It's not news that someone figured away around a train stations wifi spot. I'm sorry but it really looks more like poseur bragging.
Thats one of my biggest pet peeves about the current patent system. I had always thought that the patent description had to be clear enough so that someone skilled in the field could implement the design. Patents are supposed to be deals between the patentee and the public, where information is disclosed and the pantentee is given a time limited monopoly to his invention.
Since whern does MS not advertise on the desktop. When you installed 98 there was an icon for AOL. You did not have AOL but that icon was their to let you know that you could get ite easily.
Have you read it??? Because it says no such thing. It does NOT state that "it was COMPLETELY LEGAL to download and make available for download, a song, or a movie, or software for which you have not paid for", not even close. All the ruling states in that case was that copyright infringement can not be prosecuted under the wire fraud statute.
Silly analogy as the mafia and triads tend to use illegal business practices (such as extortion, assault, of yeah and murder) and tend to conduct black market business (drug sale and distribution, money laundering, prostitution, and various other unsavory acts). I would say that Corporate entities are far more legit, infact they are legitimized under the law which is why they exist the way they do, and as far as morals go, individuals have morals corporations by definition of being a fictictious entity do not.
While you are in a legally grey area with respect to downloading broadcast materials, the person who is distributing the file is not, He has no right to distribute the file. SO while downloading may or may not (Ok realistically it is infringement) be illegal, if someone wasn't breaking the law you couldn't do it,
and that they're still going to spend this on "negative items" like cigarettes
Most of the time the negative items are bought not with their pathetic wages but with the money given to them by friends and relatives. As for these negative items certain states are denying them access to them, Cigarettes are no longer allowed at the ACI in Rhode Island. I am not saying that some inmates can't get them but the population in general cannot.
Grendel is my dog. He is a mutt, 1/2 Rotweiller/Shepard and 1/2 Malamute. Quite frightening to see if you don't know him but really gentle with the wee ones. 100 lbs of shedding lapdog.
Ok I just did the test and I can still use OE to attach to hotmail and get all sorts of fuctionality (like managing my folders) And I did not have to pay for it. SO why again would I use this service when I can get a better one for free with OE, pluss I don't have to shell out megabucks for office to use it. (Ok I have to use the bug-laden, insecure and dangerous OE but hey there are always trade offs.)
Now they come back and sell it to you. OE used to have the ability to use Hotmail as one of it's providers (not sure if it still does but looking at this announcement I doubt it). It was basically an IMAP connection to Hotmail. I have used this in the past and it worked well, Now they are goign to relaunch it with a price of ~$60 per year? Don't know where I am going with this comment. It was probably the best way to use hotmail, but is it worth charging for? Well either way I'm cheap and won't be paying any money to MS/Hotmail for this fuctionality, I'll just have to be sad and think back to the days when I had it for free.

Oh yeah because Linux has made such a BIG dent in the desktop market.
Gee I wonder, Maybe because thats what the software was designed to run under. MS Does n ot have to make it easy or even possible for it's apps to run under wine.
ISP's are not common carriers they are classified by the FCC as Enhanced Service Providers.
Ahhh, thank you, I have been wondering what my next nasty torture should be for those pesky secret agents always crawling around my lab.
Bwaaa Haaaahaaahaaahahahah.

Wow that was a most arrogant post.
BTW Your system sucks and I drink at the Liquid Lounge in Providence.

I don't know about you but I have a HomeDepot and a Wallmart in my state. I get to pay sales tax. oh yay(deadpan)

Not in the US you can't, hell you can't even get the motherboard and processor for less then $775.00.
No I think Corporal Punishment is the son of General Electric.

Actually it doesn't matter since I use gmail now.
