  1. Re:Go DVDs! on FreeBSD on DVD · · Score: 1

All of the Sun servers I buy lately (E250/450s) come with DVD drives. I haven't seen any software released on DVD for Sun yet though. I seriously doubt they're in there to watch movies, as the machines don't have graphics cards. :)

I wouldn't say sparc is dying. The UltraSPARC III is out now and it kicks ass. I hope Sun doesn't adopt IA64 as their architecture. BTW, you missed MIPS in your list which is dead too, now that HP is moving to IA64. The HP's sucked anyways.

According to this article, no one else in the world has the abilities that I do! If I don't want to watch something, I turn off the TV! I don't flip through channels aimlessly! When I surf the web, I go to sites by URL! I rarely even use search engines unless a) I'm looking for a particular company or b) I'm searching google for a specific error message.

I don't think there is an "information overload" as stated, I think there are a lot of people who are too lazy to tune the crap out and just let themselves get bombarded. And I REALLY don't beleive the corelation with ADD.

  7. Re:Quality of work goes down the toilet on Dial U for Union · · Score: 1

I work in a non-union shop and nobody gets fired. The most useless employee we have makes more than the rest of his peers (in that group) and he can't even change file permissions in Windows. He blames everyone else when things go wrong. The managers KNOW he's useless, they're too spineless to fire anyone. Rewards aren't based on our performance, I'm not really sure what they're based on, but it's obviously not our performance.

I'm not saying a union would help, I'm complaining that we have those same problems in a non-union environment. Woe is me. Hahaha.

Now if I could only find a job that DID reward good performance.

I would have to agree with the CGPro recommendation. It's simple to install (just pkgadd it) and it runs with no configuration. Configuration is simple as well, all done through the web interface. It supports all sorts of protocols, and it handles load very well. We are still small (600 domains, 2000 users) but it only uses 0.6% of CPU max, and hardly any RAM.

  15. Cisco (nee Arrowpoint) Content Switches on BSDi's Software Divisions Acquired by Wind River · · Score: 1

Arrowpoint was purchased by Cisco who is now producing the Arrowpoint Swiches as Cisco Content Services Switches. Arrowpoint made their CLI almost identical to IOS (I assume in the hope that they'd be purchased). Cisco is phasing out their localdirector and distributed director products in favor of the Arrowpoints which do the job of both, and do it far better.

The Cisco (nee Arrowpoint) switches are slowly being "Ciscoized" over the next few software releases. The OS code is being changed to be more similar to IOS.

The Cisco CSS are (in my opinion) the best switches of their type on the market followed (REALLY closely) by Radware. These are both ASIC based switches with a central processing unit. They're fast due to the ASICs and flexible due to the CPU. The CPU makes the inital switching decision and hands the TCP flow over to the ASICs for switching.

The other options in this market space are either slow PC based systems (f5 which are BSDi based and Coyote Point which are Linux based) or inflexible ASIC based systems (Alteon, etc).

  16. Re:Why admins dont install patches? on FBI: Massive MS Exploits Over Last Year · · Score: 1

The problem is that NT is a "complex" system, it just appears simple. The sysadmins get trained as MCSE's but never truly UNDERSTAND how the OS works. I've been an NT sysadmin for 5 years (along with Sun and Linux) and feel that I have an understanding of the OS from a most basic level. That's how a sysadmin becomes "good"

As to the second point, EVERY good sysadmin knows to test the service packs on test servers first, preferrably built from a backup of the live system. If not that, built as close as possible.

And thirdly, every good MS sysadmin knows not to install service packs with even numbers. ;)
