Poor people shop at Wal Mart because they have to. The stores suck, the employees suck, everything sucks about Wal Mart.
One thing they are missing is that very few basic broadband packages offer enough download size per month to allow stuff like this to take off. Most ISP's offer 5GB-10GB a month for their basic packages, which isn't nearly enough for Wal Mart to make money off of anything.
Wal Marters will try this for a month, then get utterly shafted on usage fees then forget about it. The rest of us already have other venues to get movies.
Wal Mart would have to price this at $1.99 to get any movement, they won't price it at that level; any level they do price it at will suck and no one will care.
How do you propose to pay for content when you block out advertiser's ads? I am perfectly happy with Colgate (for example) dropping the cash needed to float and air a program that I enjoy, even if that means that 8 minutes out of every half hour I have to look at dumb ads. Most of the time these ads are ignored, sometimes they make me aware of the product so that I buy it. Advertisers aren't the scum of the Earth. Look to corporate interests to fill that role; adfolk are just trying to scrape together a buck like you and I.
Ads aren't evil, and placed well are very helpful.
Maybe it's time for MS to give up on the search thing because they have spent mega $$$ and still suck at it. maybe it's time for MS to stop trying to compete with everyone and just focus on what they do well: OS'es and Office Suites, and use war chest money to defend that area like no one else has ever seen, and not waste money on things that aren't their core focus, never will be their core focus and just realize they will suck at it until the end of days until they make such a thing their core focus at the expense of their core products. Why bother being all things to all people, when you can't really do all those things that well?
It's time for MS to stop with all this data center crap and trying to compete with Google. MS can only compete with Google if they make search their priority at the expense of everything else they do. And whatever they do, they will *never* be as good at what Google does.
Time to retrench and think up ways of holding the desktop and office markets, besides pumping out crapware every few years that no one cares about, but has to eat anyway. If they have to eat it, why not make the meal pleasant and amazing? Household licensing for both Vista Business and Office 2007 for $95 per PC if bought in lots of 5 for the home user? I'd be all over the suite like white on rice, and so would most people.
And then MS could claim that their Always On OS/Productivity Suite doesn't require an internet connection to work, and that would be their selling point. No point in competing against Google on Google's terms.
Most of the old hardware gets sold to MSN and Yahoo. Really old hardware gets sold to MS for use on.Net dev boxes. The newer stuff gets sold to MS for MSN search, but that's only if they have 640k of memory.
The smell of money gets me right the heck out of bed at any hour. Nothing can make me more awake or more motivated when the rubbing together of hundreds is involved.
Swing your dick at any false normalities of education versus results and all we get from your post is that:
1) You wasted your education studying linguistic semantics; if you went to Ivy, chances are you wasted a lot more than mere time on you part, and that money could have gone to real academic endeavors like...science.
2) You are an asshole and have no valid contribution to science other than yammering about sentence structure and grammar; things scientists don't give a fuck about because any reasonable human being can pull an idea out of a hat and see the idea for what it is, gram crackers and spelking aside and felch fests that assholes like you tend to dwell on spppellleing and irreleyvant shit, it's the idea, and not the delivery.
Why don't a group of Slashdotters invade this country and take it for themselves?
1. It would take no more then ten invaders, armed with nothing more than beer and a hamburger. 2. The person living there just wants to go home anyway.
You can't justify anything that lets police be worse at their jobs...we need to police these people (the police) fairly hardcore when we give them more technology. And this is just to police the police.
There should be no tradeoff at all. We need better people doing police work. We cannot rely upon technology to replace humanity for a group that is at best inhuman in nature.
But wut do I know heh. I constantly have to justify my youthful infractions of 2 decades ago, tame stuff, but stuff that's sticking to my ribs.
And people like you want more police. More tradeoffs between real and imagined infractions. More rules and more laws. And more cameras. More ways to make common stuff criminal so you can justify your jobs and your reason for being.
No thanks to you and people like you saying that it's always a tradeoff. It isn't always a trade off..in makebelieveland where you live I guess it might be.
But that's how marginal people like you make your nut.
Not really. You also have to factor in the man-hours involved with such a project. In the case of MS, such a thing might branch out into 50 employees diddling along for a week for a simple release, plus shipping, plus handling, plus bandwidth, plus media costs, +, +.
Even if you limited the whole thing to Vista, there's patch download costs and everything else. For MS, the whole patch thing could easily cost 6 figures ++++, and that's just on the first day of release, not including human costs. It's a huge cost for the most transparent stuff.
It's a shame that some knob weed at MS thought a handful of commodity items means jack and shit at all, ever.
But then, it might also be bloggers that can't read a fucking contract.
No...Vista is so much better at search that is is amazing. Indexing and search on XP was bad in the very best case, on Vista it is Wow Factor x 10...and currently the only reason why I would choose Vista over XP, but then I tend to keep things in very ordered pilings of stock....which I would do anyway on any OS to simplify backups...but based upon search and search alone I would pick Vista over anything....but that alone, based upon how I keep data organized isn't a good reason to pick Vista over...anything else, really.
I love Vista for lots of reasons...and for a lot of these reasons I feel that I have been there and done that in OSX...with Vista I get Aero and the same features that Apple users have had for far too long.
Why this isn't a free OS update befuddles me....beyond knowing that MS needs something new to make cash.
The grad student had created a web site capable of printing fake airline boarding passes. Bin Laden is quoted: 'If they fix the airport security problems... then this entire process has been worth it. Because I blew up two more towers. If they don't fix airport security, then... what was the purpose?'"

No mention of BeOS or O/S2 Warp. :(

Light + crappy lens = why bother?
Slashdot hoping to be Digg now?

Ok...add to my list one copy of Ishtar and a photo of Paris Hilton.

Think of the possibilities!
AllofMp3 thinks this is funny, too.
GWB...Nucular tides.
:)
You heard it here first.

Would cloned humans taste any better than people do now?
I won the lottery.
Twice.
I spent a lot on booze and whores.
I wasted the rest.

#1 Steve Jobs will move in next to Jeffrey Skilling.
One company I worked for declined annual raises, then management gave themselves leased Mercedes SUV's as year end bonus. We got calendars.
Myself and a few others quit the day we heard about the new vehicles.
Free speech so long as your speech upholds MY values. It's time for these Reagan (Stalin) administrators to be put out to pasture.

...same as XP in that regard, they changed the EULA.
It's ok to be Arab on a plane. Rags don't get their turbans checked. They don't get checked at all.
:D fuck rags.
Meanwhile, genuine citizens get shaken down by the TSA and called terrorist.
100% of the people that have have ever caused harm on an airline have been ragheads.
It's not racial profiling. It's a description of the suspect.

The code to killing a bunch of worthless rags is
left up left left right right.
Numpad works.
So....what's going to happen after Bush is out of office?
