  1. Re:Addiction replacement program on The Science of 12-Step Programs · · Score: 1

12-step programs merely replace one addiction with another. The dependence on alcohol or drugs is replaced with dependence on the Invisible Hairy Thunderer in the Sky, and, more significantly, his alleged representatives here on earth. If 12-step programs are so successful in treating addiction, then why do people continue to attend meetings for decades? Any ethical clinical psychologist will tell you that her ultimate job is to render her services unnecessary by helping the patient to achieve independence. 12-step programs merely encourage a different form of co-dependence. It's manipulative and self-serving on the part of the 12-step programs' institutional leaders, and ultimately damaging to the participants. I, for one, would rather expire from alcohol-related liver failure than surrender my ability to think critically.

A fair arguement you put out here, though I echo others here saying that AA, NA and other 'programs' aren't meant to be life-long dependencies. In the beginning you're desperate for help and answers, that's why people decide to try going to their first meeting, nothing else has worked.

We really need to learn to become our own 'babysitters' in our lives. Would you let a 5 year old get shit-faced? Do harmful drugs? Of course not, that is unthinkable to allow. You are the only person in your life that's around you every moment of every day, so you need to be your own babysitter, and not permit yourself to get involved in any reckless, harmful behavior. If you wouldn't let a 5 year old do something that you know would be harmful to him/her, don't let you do it to yourself. Learn to deny doing the things to yourself that you would never let a kid do.

Alcohol is the most harmful drug on the planet, it's just a legal drug. Combine all other drugs together, and alcohol is still the most destructive drug, harmful to you socially, to relationships, health and lives. Beer was my problem, gave it up many years ago, and my life got better. I wouldn't trade my sober-thinking brain of today for all the money in the world, period. Without a clear ability to reason and think clearly I'd be..., less of a person. I've learned to love myself enough to come to believe that I deserve a good life, not a drug affected one. It took time, self denial, and a belief that I'm worthwhile enough to give soberness a good chance, and my life has improved and gotten better. And if I can do it, anyone can. But you have to want it for yourself.

If a program helps you to begin that 'lifelong journey', great, whatever works. AA won't always be there in those moments when you're passing the beer aisle, you need to constantly make decisions as they come up every day that you don't want that old life back again, that you deserve a good life, and alcohol/drugs can not be part of that equation. And the more you do it, day by day, weeks/months/years, it gets easier and easier to stay sober.

I wish luck and happiness to all who read this. Keep on the straight and narrow path. Do the 'hard things' in life. After a while, the 'hard' becomes easy... like anything else, it just takes practice. Lots of it. :-)

My library has lots of DVDs of good (and bad) movies and tv shows, for when I need a fix of boob-tube viewing, which is rarer and rarer lately. Real life beckons, and I'll be damned if I'll be spending (wasting) my remaining years on this planet sitting zombie-like in front of a screen, bitching about how my cable company doesn't carry a channel that has little to offer. Breaking the tv habit is quite freeing, and I doubt I'll ever go back to that world. There's too much other great things to actually 'do' in life.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have used a 3-D printer to create a custom-made, life-saving implant for a baby boy, they report today in a letter in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The baby, Kaiba Gionfriddo, suffered from a rare disorder in which one of the airways in his lungs collapsed when he exhaled. The problem caused him to stop breathing and turn blue when he was only 6 weeks old. Even with a mechanical ventilator, Kaiba stopped breathing virtually every day, requiring doctors to perform emergency resuscitations.

"We'd recently had a child in the hospital who died of this, and I said, 'there has got to be a solution that we can find for these kids,' " says co-author Glenn Green, Kaiba's doctor and an associate professor of otolaryngology.

So Green and his Michigan colleagues tried something new.

Using a 3-D printer, they custom-built a tiny, flexible splint that will grow with Kaiba. Researchers used a special material designed to be absorbed by Kaiba's body in about three years, says co-author Scott Hollister, a professor of biomedical and mechanical engineering.

Instead of making a cast of Kaiba's airway with plaster, they used a CT scanner, which gave them a 3-D blueprint.

Like a vacuum-cleaner hose, the C-shaped splint is flexible enough to move when Kaiba breathes. But it's also firm enough to prevent his air tube from flopping shut, says Green.

Kaiba was able to come off the ventilator three weeks after his surgery in February 2012. "Our prediction is that this will be a cure for him," Green says. "The splint will go away and the process will be done."

The porous splint is made from the same material as dissolvable stitches, Green says. Just as a wisteria vine grows through a trellis, Kaiba's body will create new cells to permeate the scaffold. By the time the splint is completely absorbed, doctors hope that Kaiba's own tissue will be sturdy enough to keep his airway open.

Yahoo Back On Top After Purchasing Millions Of 13-Year-Old Girls’ Blogs

SUNNYVALE, CA—Finally overcoming competition from the likes of Google, Microsoft, and AOL, internet corporation Yahoo firmly re-secured its place as an industry leader after Sunday’s purchase of millions of blogs written by 13-year-old girls.

“While Yahoo has seen its share of struggles over the years, the company’s acquisition of over 100 million blogs written by middle-school females before bedtime has already majorly revitalized the company’s brand,” said BCG consultant Timothy Shore, praising the $1.1 billion purchase of web pages filled with complaints about parents, speculation about cute boys in school, and photos of Robert Pattinson.

“Yahoo is looking to the future here, and tying the entire life of their company to a bunch of pubescent girl bloggers was the smart move.”

Yahoo has projected that 13-year-old Melissa Wheeler’s blog, mellisasworld.tumlbr.com, would eventually pull in over $2.3 billion for the company.

Bowie wrote this after seeing the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. "Space Oddity" is a play on the phrase "Space Odyssey," and the title does not appear in the lyrics. The song tells the story of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who cuts off communication with Earth and floats into space. In a 2003 interview with Performing Songwriter magazine, Bowie explained: "In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. But it actually wasn't. It was written because of going to see the film 2001, which I found amazing. I was out of my gourd anyway, I was very stoned when I went to see it, several times, and it was really a revelation to me. It got the song flowing. It was picked up by the British television, and used as the background music for the landing itself. I'm sure they really weren't listening to the lyric at all (laughs). It wasn't a pleasant thing to juxtapose against a moon landing. Of course, I was overjoyed that they did. Obviously, some BBC official said, 'Oh, right then, that space song, Major Tom, blah blah blah, that'll be great.' 'Um, but he gets stranded in space, sir.' Nobody had the heart to tell the producer that."

In 1980, Bowie released a follow-up to this called "Ashes To Ashes," where Major Tom once again makes contact with Earth. He says he is happy in space, but Ground Control comes to the conclusion that he is a junkie.

From JoyStiq.com: The Ouya isn't going to make its planned June 4 launch. The diminutive Android console will now launch on June 25. Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman tells Joystiq that the decision was made in order to meet high demand at retail.

"We've had incredibly positive reactions from our retail partners, and so in order to meet their greater than expected demand, we decided to shift the launch date by a couple of weeks – three weeks – which will allow us to create more units and, basically, have more units on store shelves in June."

Uhrman also addressed one of Ouya's stickier issues, notably that the controller's buttons can get stuck underneath its faceplate. The problem has already been fixed, she says, and is being implemented in production. The solution: larger button holes. "I don't know what the exact millimeter is, but we've increased the size just a little bit, so now the buttons don't stick under it. We made that change very early so all the units are being produced with those larger button holes." The corrected controllers will ship alongside Ouya's retail launch units.
