George Carlin was one of the trailblazers in comedy, with comics blazing a trail for him (Lenny Bruce, for one example, paid a heavy price in the name of comedy). For the uninitiated, I suggest watching some of G.C. on youtube. For him, words were just words, it's how they are used, the 'context' used at times, that's when trouble starts. The intent meant when directed at someone else in order to belittle and demean, in order for the speaker to have a false sense of superiority over another, that is the wrong.

"For instance, you take the word "Nigger." There is absolutely nothing wrong with the word "Nigger" in and of itself. It's the racist asshole who's using it that you ought to be concerned about. We don't mind when Richard Pryer or Eddie Murphy say it. Why? Because we know they're not racist. They're Niggers! Context. Context. We don't mind their context because we know they're black. Hey, I know I'm whitey, the blue-eyed devil, paddy-o, fay gray boy, honkey, mother-fucker myself. Don't bother my ass." - George Carlin

Dude, Sony discontinued this product 7 years ago. I'm sure you've gotten your money's worth out of it.

Think about it this way: If it died of hardware failure instead, would you be so upset? Likely not.

There is no good reason for electronics to arbitrarily fail unless a component burns out. This 'fail' is designed into the product, to force consumers to buy new. Hey, it's good for the economy that whatever you buy is meant to last for only a pre-determined finite time.

Now maybe the younger generations are used to (and accept) this way of doing business. Us older neckbeards know different. Electronic things lasted, they were built to. I had Sony walkmans that were high-quality builds, you had to try really hard to break them. I still own an AM-FM rasio that uses 'C' batteries that still works like when it was new, that's how well things were built then. This 'throwaway-get the latest and greatest' then throw it out in 2+ years mentality does not work for me. Knowing how things today are built to not last, I think long and hard before deciding to spend my hard-earned money. I spend my $ on a hundred dollar rv, not a $1500 one, since I know the thing will only last a few years anyway, no matter if it cost more or not.

Okay, I've had my rant here, now, goml :-)

You're fools for not protecting your cities, even after they've seen storms and destruction over and over again in the extremely short history of the USA. The kind of foolishness that only Americans can come up with. Combine that with a religious approach to just about anything and that's how you come up with nonsense like reducing CO2 emissions to prevent stuff from happening that has happened at much lower CO2 concentrations in much greater frequency and force.

  18. Re:Climate Change? on Brainstorming Ways To Protect NYC From Real Storms · · Score: 1

People could start taking climate change seriously and reduce CO2 emissions.

Hurricane Sandy has nothing to do with global warming. Sandy was a confluence of a winter and a summer storm , creating a storm surge that flooded NYC, Long Island and New Jersey shores. In other words, it was a natural weather event. It has been happening for way long before the start of the U.S.'s industrial revolution. People seem to love to smugly claim,, "It's climate change", and really it's just how weather has been happening in the world for eons. Hunpmanity today is smart enough to deal with storm surges, it's an engineering task that should be built.
