but I'm gonna. I work for (large cap networking company) . When I started I had no skillz/experience at all. They needed warm bodies handle all the expansion they were doing. They threw me into MVS Operations/Production Control with a few other new people and lot old mainframe dogs. That was sooo cool. Everyday was an 8 hour class that covered deepest philosophies of the mainframe world. Then came the big UNIX revolution of '99. It was suddenly way cheaper to support 400+ UNIX boxen than the handful of big iron. Alot of the old guys lost their jobs. I scored well on the tests (thanks to tinkering with the Linux at home) and got a new assignment as jr sysadmin/operator. Big learning curve again. I loved every minute of it. Then came the bubble. I wound up being laid off *with pay* for 30 days(Union job CWA)and was one of the lucky few called back. That's why I shouln't complain. But NOW there's little for me to do. There ain't shit out on the raised floor. Right now I'm monitoring a few backups. That's it. I like making good money but can't stand to have nothing to do. It's like...detention. All night long. The company has no direction but to cut costs and I can't help with that. I'm glad I have a job but my job sucks now.
Note: I've seen a few posts that mention managers who are geeks/coders/techies and while that would seem to be ideal I can tell you that two guys they moved out of my department and into management both have skills/knowledge that I respect. But they've completly lost the will to live and I'm certain their skills are destined to atrophy.
Exspense aside (and the no monitor thing) this thing is cool. It looks like it would fit in my dashboard just fine. Looks like it might come out easy, too. Use the GPS with a GIS program like Arcview or something and never be lost. Adjust my ECU on the fly in case I run across a punk in Civic who thinks his exhaust tip is bigger than mine. I can log travel info, fuel consumption, weather data, update my weblog while getting a ticket, whatever. Save 5GB for my mp3s. Take it into the house (or friends house) and use it like a briefcase for pr0n/music/anything. You get the idea.
Heh heh... I thought about putting it on my M300 when I first started messing around with it. Kudos on getting it running! I totally agree that it's great to play around with. It helped me get used to some of differnt naming conventions and things that that are just a little bit different from linux or HP-UX and the like.
Solaris 8 on x86 just a novelty
on
No Solaris 9 for x86
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
After installing Solaris 8 on a leftover box last year I can tell you two things:
There's no substitute for 64 bit arch
Only the most common X86 hardware is supported
First off, to be fair, the box had a K6-II@400 mghz so I didn't expect it to blaze in the first place. But I'm used to the performance of the E10k's we have layin' here at work as well as various 6500s and 4500s so I was a bit disappointed. It was cool for a while though. The box is back to running whatever linux distro I feel like messing with. (I should put a crontab entry to fdisk every Saturday:P).
I had to go through the parts box for a video card that was old enough for Solaris to like (I don't remember Trident or Virge something). No Voood Doo or Rage goin' on here although I suspect some patch might work later after the install.
Sun did a nice thing releasing Solaris 8 for x86. I certainly helped me become more familiar with that OS as a whole. I wouldn't recommend, however, using the x86 version on a production intel machine. There are better OS's for 32 bits:).
I don't mean to be putting down Sun's efforts. The gave us Solaris 8 (for free even). I just don't think we're going to miss much without Solaris 9 x86.
I picked up the shuttle FV24 and and one of these. The board fits perfectly. I attached a 2.5in HDD inside lid with Velcro and laid some foam packing uder the Mobo for insulation then broke out the Dremel. There isn't any room to utilize the lone PCI slot (though a TV in card would be cool) and I'm still looking for a good power supply solution but this will rock when it's done.
I Seriously doubt they would have put forth the slightest effort to take care of the problem in a timely fashion had it not been disclosed *first*. They may have even 'swept it under the rug' to avoid the bad PR. Big Corps don't like it when the decisions get taken out of their hands like that. They tend to whine alot when it happens. I say kudos to w00w00 for lighting the fire under 'em!
The article is a little light on details. Other than the ten legs nothing else seems to suggest this is a squid. It feeds like a jellyfish, it looks like a jellfish(to me). Radial symetry is characteristic of jellyfish so ten legs of equal lenght don't rule out jellyfish. Nothing is mentioned about the rigidity of the beast which would point in the direction of the squid. Tranceparency (can't tell from the photo) might indicate jellyfish, but not rule out squid, depending on internal structures that might be seen. Based solely on the article I am inclined to decalre it a jellyfish. Perhaps more than five or ten minutes of behavioral observation and a captured specimen to study would be helpful.
The only system still running would be powered by the UPS generators in Cheyenne Mountain. Unfortunatly It's a P90 running kernel 1.2 that got walled in by mistake. When they do find it there wont be any doubt about the world record for uptime.
Would 2 Quad boxes be better than 4 duals? I don't think they're *much* more expensive (per slot)and administering two boxes might be more practical than four. The performance gained by eliminating communications overhead may make for a desirable price/performance. I don't know; I was just thinkin'...
Astroglide Party!
w00t!
hmmm...wouldn't the blades decay and fall apart? Probably better to piont hhe beam at the water and let the steam turn the blades. ;)

IANAL either but I think the code *would* be public record but kept as a sealed document, ie. public record exempt from public disclosure.

Phone bill: about $50 per month for a single line
Cable tv : about $45 per month non-digital
Internet : cable or dsl about $50 a month
E-mail, UT, pr0n, Pizza & Chinese Food, Four hours of "Buffy", CNN and X-files all day, every day, without ever putting on pants...priceless.
I was afaid she might think it was like getting her a bowling ball with my name on it but she dug it. Chicks *DO* dig linux.

Yes...the squiggly thing above the tab key.
You Bastards!
Oh they're biologiests . Well then it must be a squid to be sure.

OH Sh*t! I'm ROFLMAO I love it when people have knowledge of and access to things that are kept from the rest of us for a reason :)))
