or do I get a different "Internet" on my box. I'm gonna assume the 'internet' refered to in the article is actually the World Wide Web. There's alot more than that on/to the "The Internet". I do plenty over the internet that doesn't/won't involve any large media corp suggesting new ways for me to give them my money. I have yet to see an X10 add pop up while I ssh into my network at home from my girfriend's house, or while I'm trading some warez/mp3z via my friends' FTP boxes. The net doesn't run only on ports 80 and 25. I seems to me that the "wild frontier" that existed in the early ninteies didn't disappear, it just changed ports. The internet is still a free, global communications medium without spam or X10 ads *if your technically savvy* just like back in '92. The only thing that makes the WWW suck is its popularity.
Popularity == "a buck to be made here" and that sigularity of purpose streamlines its methods over time as a rule. You get less satisfaction for more money because someone else will pay more for less. At the same time the big fish eat all the small fish and the sources of satisfation become limited. Its the same with any product. The easy-to-use browser made the WWW popular and it followed that pattern but that doesn't mean the internet belongs to BigAssMedia, Inc. Make the internet what you want. The media companies can't keep up with grass-roots innovations. Let them have the sheep and you just use the 'net for cool stuff.
...but I gotta say except for the 15 min narrative to set up the story, the original movie ruled. The miniseries just lacks the style in art direction. Maybe if I sit through another four hours "New Dune" it might grow on me.
Just like I pay my cable bill for 57 channels of crap, I already pay the ISP for 57,000,000 channels of crap. You can't make it without a new revenue stream? Good...Go under. Maybe the Internet doesn't need you. Maybe I won't have to sift through all of the crap to find what I want.
Need a new revenue stream? Charge more for advertising. Don't charge me. I'll be paying it eventually anyway if your advertiser offers anything I might want. If nobody wants their crap we won't have sort through that either.
I'm all for letting attrition revert the Internet back into something cool. It's time to rm -rf the rotting carcases of "www.tubesox.com" and other failed get-in-on-the-ground-floor-make-a-billion-dollars bullshit sites that never had chance to be anything of value. I'm not payin' more for crap.
I currently work for a large cap telecom company and I am a card carrying CWA member, but not exactly by choice. When I was hired told to "choose now" and by the way, even if you opt out of the union you will still be paying the dues. What else could I do but join the union. The repesentation is there if I need it, but the quality of work seems to suffer greatly in a union shop. Speak the phrase 'Work ethic' in there and you are met with only blank stares. No one _ever_ goes the extra distance to further our the company's goals and the 'stick-it-to-the-man' attitude is the rule. Not a day goes by that doesn't include a meeting with the union steward over an individual being forced to work a holiday or a schedule they don't like:"I want to work Sun-Thur not Mon-Fri, so-and-so works Sun-Thurs and I have seniority!". It makes me sick to hear this after spending 15 years as a chef in various restraunts (not a bad job if you work in a nice place and maybe run things) where the work is physical and demanding, and the hours sometimes long depending on the needs of the business. If the business prospered, you prospered. Union empoyees seem to drain any shred of nobility the job might of had.
I don't care much for the union but it is a neccessary evil. I don't want to be replaced by 14yr old girls forced to work 14 hour days for little pay and no overtime. Which is what would happen if there were no unions (or laws, exaggeration admitted). What's more is I'm certain that I make more money, my job is more secure, my benefits more attractive and my life better, in the broader sense, than in a non-union shop. The adversarial relationship between the company and the union keeps both from running amok.
I think I've got a couple of extra ones. Do have anything to trade? I collect beer cans. Send me an empty and I'll send you a cue cat. Anything Aussie ecept Fosters. E-mail me if our interested
Not one link to the "Windows to (insert favorite desktop) Tutorial" ? I'm disappointed. Then again, maybe I'm not. I've been toying with the idea of "whipping up" just this kinda website for a while. My roommate is a recent convert (not his choice...my computers) and while he's bright and picks things up with reasonable swiftness I wind answering a hundred questions a day like "How do I play this MP3?" and "What the hell is emacs?"We never had these exchanges before and frankly sometimes I just wanna kick his a$$ for not trying to figure it out by himself like I did. Some kind of searchable web based help tool, designed for the Windows oriented user, would be a perfect remedy.
To this end I'm willing to donate equipment/code/time but a few things are in the way. For one, I did things in Windows my own way and I don't think I could come up with conversions for all of the other ways to do things simply because I don't know all of the other ways to do things. Some outside input would probably be the solution here. Also new versions of desktops for Linux seem to pop up every couple of months. Sometimes the changes are not significant to a user and sometimes they are. It seems to me that it might be difficult to keep up.
On a personal level, I'm no Linux ninja and I'm busy trying to solve my own system and network problems. If I can convince my ISP to let me run a web sevice from my network (without forcing me intoa business account) and figure out why the DSL just randomly drops the connection (when I pay extra to be "always on") I'd be happy to host this thing.
If any one is interested helping out making some suggestions feel free to e-mail me!
