Everytime I go grocery shopping Im like "Which cereal shall I chose." For heavens sake theres an entire isle devoted to cearel. I think this confuses the consumer. Instead there should be only one cereal called "United Cereal."
Just Kidding. Your right there are to many Linux distros. However, I think we like varity. The best way to go for a newcommer is to use a well supported distro like Redhat. Don't worry about all the distros out there. Many of them are to fill a nitch and don't concearn newbies.
The more licensing becomes a pain the more it will make other companies weak up and realize that openness is important. Microsoft is doing us a favor. Tough luck for Kmart. Maybe next time they will think harder when they decide to implement a technology into their infrastructure.
Often time when I read Slashdot articles I get the impression that many of you think that any company that tries to sell software for money is bad. I just don't understand why you would make a big deal out of something not being free. The reason I use open source software isn't because its free.
Stop being such cheep bastards and start paying for software. It helps open source companies out. The more money in the open source companies the better.
I don't really care if you buy Solaris though. Its not open source.
I read Just for Fun, the biography of Linus. If Im not mistaken he actaully says copyrights are good. Its what allows us open sourcers to enforce the GPL.
I still don't understand the difference between patents and copyright.
Briteny Spears looked so hard up for cash in that picture. I feel really bad now. Ill never forgive myself if she has to resort to getting her meals from a soup kitchen.
There are bigger problems in the world then making sure the rich stay rich.
My favorite comment from Steve Ballmar was "We do not anticipate offering software on Linux," said Ballmer. "Nobody pays for software on Linux."
To me that shows that Microsoft still doesn't get it and they are very swiftly becoming a dinosour. The business model for an open source company is completely different from the traditional model of I sale software and you pay for it. The future is in services and support.
Microsoft's new initiative to provide the source code for the basis of a stronger community just won't work and I will tell you why. The open source community thrives on recognition, thats their motivation. Whats the motivation to fix Microsoft products and let them take all the credit. There is none.
Im so sick of hearing about Microsoft. I wish they would just fall of the face of the earth and us open source people can move on with our lives. Ahhh.. what a nice thought...
My dad uses Linux which if you knew him was an amazing accomplishment. Its not to tough to tell your 55 year old dad to open a console and type rpm -Uhv./blah.rpm. My Dad uses his digital camera just fine besides the fact that Sony doesn't know how to support Linux yet so I just did it myself. He plugs it in the usb port. Ximian mounts it automatically, he clicks on the icon, bam! images start to appear, need them in you dir dad, click and drag. I don't know what you tried to set your dad up with but it sounds like to me you didn't do a good job cuz your dad can't be any more user dumb then my dad is.
The companies are choosing linux over FreeBSD because the FreeBSD license allows people to kidknapp code. Nobody at any of these companies wants to contribute source code to an OS that could be highjacked and made better unless they company can benefit as well.
The GPL prevents this by saying if you redistribute the program with changes you have to redistribute the source code as well.
From a usability standpoint this could be used to determine ways to decrease the number of keys pressed to complete a task. If it could keep track of which keys were pressed it would be even more useful to application developers concearned with usablity and design issues.
Are you aware that on page 181 in your book Under the Radar there is a blatant grammer mistake? In heading III, 3 sentences down, the word make should be instead the word made.
Being the open source genius you are, I must admit, I am slightly disappointed.
Do you believe this mistake could have been prevented if the Linux text editor you used (vi) had an artificailly intelligent paper clip that winked at you and danced around?
PS. Don't ask him this. I might want a job at Redhat someday.
What a great time to clarify this question. Can Joe Shmoe sell GPL'd software to the masses for a profit as long as he adheres to the terms of the GPL? Or is not making a profit on the software one of the terms? Yes, I am clear on the fact that Joe Shmoe can include a shiny instruction manual and support for money. If this is the case my next question is why not?
The GPL is as American as warm apple pie. It brings competition to the playing field, something that the United States has always worked to achieve.
What do you think Micro$oft intended to accomplish with these comments and why are they telling this to lawmakers? Are they trying to save their own asses or scare lawmakers into doing something?
I must speak up here and say if you want a version of Linux more like Windows try something like Mandrake. Although I find SuSE to fit my needs everyone is different.
Just because something isn't exactly like Windows does not mean it does not work. Why are people so against taking an extra 5 mins to figure out how something works.
Im not against a University making money. I am, however, against the idea of a University making a decision based on money rather then what is best for education.
Although be it necessary to license the technology it should be done with the intention of protecting the code from profiteers and to insure the code is kept open to share with others, anything else would be wrong.
Difference being that Microsoft is selling software and Redhat is selling service and support.
I also found this article at Yahoo. Artcle
Are these politicians running this term or not?

Now somebody just needs to find a way to solve Tetris in polynomial time and they will be rich.

I forgot about that. Microsoft is losing money on every Xbox sale!. I remember the story on techtv. Im going to go out and buy one now.
Isn't it kind of ironic that the same company we all love to hate is benefitting from increased sales of customers wanting to run Linux on the Xbox.
So someone can now kill clippy by paying Microsoft for their hardware to run the game.
All that aside, game sounds cool. Rock on.

wait, let me just turn this on. Ok..
go ahead and talk now.
Its a safty feature to protect us from accidently playing Celine Dion's CD.

Maybe somebody should set up a mirror for the IBM Ecplise page.I think they are getting slashdotted.

Not so. Caldera, SuSE, Redhat, and blah all sale manuals and support.
