There are many, many good news aggregators out there now, people who want to have aggregated news feeds WILL USE A NEWS AGGREGATOR. Slashdot should be original news.
But couldn't I just as easily say "There are many, many good original news feeds out there now, people who want to have original news WILL USE AN ORIGINAL NEWS FEED. Slashdot should be news aggregator."
Admittedly I haven't used slashdot for as long as you have but in my recollection it hasn't changed considerably over the years. And it's not like the name "slashdot" suggests it should be anything else than what it is. It's always seemed to me that slashdot's mission is simply to post stories for discussion that the editors would like to post. Yes that is an incredibly narcissistic mission but it turns about people have shown up in the 1,000's to discuss these stories. Just because slashdot is popular it "should" have to change what it does?
...at least it does to me. I don't know who else was following along with the claims of "As Seen on TV" of being a big shot at apple but
here he pretty much states there will never be a video ipod from apple. I'm guessing most people already had their suspicions about the guy but for me this confirms mine.
I know I shouldn't use/. as a technical forum but I'm going to anyhow. A few days ago I upgraded to x.org in debian and it discovered my on board video card as a trident compatible just fine. But when x.org started all I got was a white screen and my virtual terminals went hay wire. So I rolled back to xfree86 which continued to work. Has asyone else had this problem. Has it been corrected? Thanks
uh, capt. obvious, that was the GP's point. Did you notice how he capitalized "never" in his post. Did you think he did that because capitals look pretty? His point was that he was illustrating how extreme that example would be for the stock price not to go down.
oh "its" is for the possessive. When you want "it is" you need an apostrophe.

Since French is the [u]niversal language of [d]iplomats[...]
Wow. This has to be one of the finer examples of constructing a complicated argument just to prove someone wrong. The pdf says right at the top that it is referring to different languages not different places. Since this discussion is in English the proper spelling to use is the English spelling. I think this is the simplest argument. Is there really a reason to draw the diplomats into this?
Not that I disagree with your comments but I do want to clarify something. The term big-L Liberal refers to someone who is part of a political partied titled "Liberal." It is not (how you seemed to use it) capitalized for emphasis. Someone who has very liberal beliefs could be referred to as a big small-L liberal: big for emphasis.
I don't think this is incidental like a spelling or grammar mistake. By misusing a term that has meaning you rob it of its meaning so that after repeated such abuses we won't have these terms to make such distinctions. And to be blunt, misusing a term like this makes you seem uninformed and makes it much harder to agree with your point.
You clearly didn't understand the conversation or what I was responding to. I was responding to the statement that you lose the right to back up your purchase. In fact I go on to say that you can't re-encode or get the bit rate you want. This was a discussion about what you are able to do with your purchase. This was not a conversation about what you were purchasing. It is in plain site that you are buying compressed music. So here's a thought, if you don't like compressed music don't buy compressed; I don't. I only listen to mp3s on my mp3 player when I'm on the go and even then I'm usually listening to speech of some sort.
And oh yeah, when I'm at home I listen to predominantly lp's. On a real home stereo the difference between CDs and lp's is obvious and striking. They are the best option for anyone who really cares about fidelity.
Correct me if I'm wrong but once you buy one of these songs from itunes or napster you can burn it to cd. So there's absolutely nothing stopping you from creating backups. In fact you can still make a mix cd for your buddy if you want.
But you do give up the ability to re-encode in whatever format/bitrate. If you're like me and you bought a non-ipod mp3 player that can be a serious hassle (enough of a hassle that I've never bought a song with my ibook). No, I refuse to burn and re-encode.
But the stuff we did with cds in the early 90s we can still do with these DRM'd songs. I'm just suggesting keeping some perspective on what's really being limited.
Here is one reason why it could harm the linux desktop (though I don't see why it should harm it that much). There are those who will buy a linux desktop as a microsoft alternative but they don't want a mac because down the road they can still put windows on. They're hedging their bets. I very much doubt we will ever see OSX running on your run of the mill x86 I think even apple has admitted that it will probably be very easy to run windows on a Mactel.
I know several linux/Windows users who play the fence all the time and probably would buy a mac if they knew they could put windows on it down the road.

Personally, I think that copyrights on music should last until the writer dies, and they should only be given to the song writer.
Let me say that again. You never never never want to base the length of copyright on someones death. There are enough things that makes passing on hard enough. We don't need to put the added stress on people with the idea that "every day I stay alive is another residue check my family can receive." Or worse "if we unplug dad from the respirator out estate has to give up our copyright." Linking financial matters (even more than we already have) with the process of dying is inhuman. This is one of those cases where something sounds like a good idea but the consequences are disgusting.
I never knew that the simpsons also asked NASA for the the 40,000th digit of Pi. But I've known for a while that they asked David Bailey for it as well (Bailey is one of the B's from BBP numbers... which is the formula to calculate an arbitrary digit of Pi in Hex). You can actually see a picture of the fax that the simpsons sent him on the 4th page of this pdf http://www.cecm.sfu.ca/personal/jborwein/pi-slides.pdf I always thought that it was pretty cool that they took the trouble to just find out what the right digit was but now I know they actually decided to confirm it as well. That's pride in ones craft right there.

I think most people who are drunk, know that they are drunk, but are too stupid to think that they are sober enough to drive home.
This is a terrible attitude to have. I would bet a large percentage of DUI's had the exact same attitude before they were ticketed or in an accident. The truth is you don't have to feel or act drunk for you to be over the legal limit and have your reaction time reduced enough to be a danger on the road. After only 2 or 3 drinks most people are over the legal limit. It seems you are well intentioned but the myth that drunk drivers can tell they are drunk is a dangerous lie and needs to be corrected.

In fact, they're bigger now than they've ever been before. Have you noticed the outside content providers that google offers on its personalized home page? I guarantee you that you will never receive a job offer to be a slashdot editor by posting a message about how you are better trained to do their jobs. They don't care about you and - more importantly - they don't have to.

It just so happens that it can be argued that Bush has been following the same pattern as any drive towards fascism. Thus, any parallels to the current state of the U.S. is purely coincidental.
It is silly to think that this is just a coincidence. Lucas has never made it a secret that he has a strong disliking of first Nixon and now Bush. If he would tailer his films originally as a Nixon criticisms it makes perfect sense that he would alter them so that they would suit as Bush criticisms. But so what? If you're waiting for a truly neutral commentary on politics you are going to be waiting a long time.
It's fair to take Lucas' points to heart. It's a little naive to think that Lucas wrote about the road to fascism and left his feelings for Bush out of it.
Why? Nonprofit organizations aren't anti-money. In fact often their raison d'etre is to take in and spend money. We're not talking about sociallist love-ins here. Employees of non-profits still need to be paid. Costs still need to be covered. Lots of people make money at non-profits. If google's actions means lost revenues (I'm not saying it will) for the non-profits then they may not be able to afford to continue on.
I don't see why a machine has to let you "enact fair-use." Certainly you can't be sued or charged for actions that fall under fair use but does that mean the technology provider has to make the process easy for you? Should television producers be required to provide you with a vcr so you can time shift? Does every CD have to come with an mp3 player and a computer since moving music to an mp3 player falls under fair use? I could go on.
The point is there are a lot of things in this world that are not illegal but someone is not obliged to make it easy for you to do it.
If we are both in a bar you would be well with in your rights to bore me with you life story (try to sue someone for talking to you and for being boring) but I can still wear ear plugs.
