My house and a nightclub are two different places. I expect privacy at home, regardless of whether or not my window is open. It is my home. I do not expect this privacy while walking down the street.
That's why they have two different words for those places: public and private
Saying that this is all the apps fault and saying that it is all the users fault are both incorrect. This needs to be removed, because it's a bit creepy. BUT, we also need to use this as an educational moment for the general public. . . ..
That's an interesting statement. Do you believe that this app would have been allowed to survive if the connection to foursquare and fb hadn't been made?
That may be, but Trailer Park Boys is genuinely a close second. The scene mentioned earlier in this thread where they're preparing to send a rocket into space, and Bubbles is wearing a metallic children's space suit the entire time. . . . Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding.
This is where the marketing genius of the US has bamboozled us the most. We shouldn't have to opt-out. We shouldn't be required to be part of telemarketing/data-collection like it's a birthright.
BUT, by coming up with GENIUS ideas like opt-out, we're trained to honestly believe, deep down, that the system has always been this way, will always be this way, and the only way to not participate is to put your name on a list. Oh, and that list is only good for 5 years or so.
Marketing, sales and the almighty quest for wealth will be the death of us all.
I don't often side with the Church, but I would LOOOVVVEE to see some Catholics or Hindus or someone file copyright infringement against medicine companies on behalf of God/Creator Spirit/what-have-you.
That's been my main strategy against governmental/private/or any other type of spying on my activities. If my queries reveal that I looked up bomb making parts, you better take that into consideration with the Japanese tentacle monster that's in my history as well. I feel sorry for whoever has to track my logs. That poor bastard is in for a strange ride.
One issue with these is that neither the random parent statement or the article in question actually answer if a so called quantum drive is actually more useful than your laptop for that thing they do.
I don't know about you, but I personally love Liv Tyler, Steve Zahn, Tom Hanks, Charlize Theron, Obba Babatundé, Giovanni Ribisi, and PETER FREAKING SCOLARI. Talk about an ALL STAR CAST!!!!
It's called crowdsourcing. If the OED can do it back in the Olde Timey Days, and programs like Foldit can do it now, why not the state department in the future?
The best way to win a fight is to have someone else do it for you.
This applies if they're wasting the money on hookers and coke, as you said. But they're plainly not. And I understand that you were talking in the metaphorical, don't do X if you don't want Y, but this is a real world application. That metaphorical and theoretical example only applies in THEORY
People that insist that every single example of a given issue be compared to the theory are simpletons. Yes, theory has a place. This is not the place. The place for theory is if Google doesn't really exist, there are no shareholders, and there is no actual pressure to conform to the greed-based business model of today. (I'll give you that someone should have seen this coming and addressed it by now, though)
They're actually 'wasting' it on innovation. They're actually 'wasting' it on LONG-TERM projects.
They're not theoretically wasting the money on hookers and coke.
Comparing a company that is being held captive by shareholders that wants to innovate, and a company that is being held captive by shareholders because it is spending money on hookers and coke is like comparing apples to dog shit.
Learn the difference between a text-book and real-life, please.
Proving a doomsayer in my family wrong is actually how I started getting interested in probability theory (and changed the course of events through my life).
Again, I apologize for not explaining myself a bit better.
It's not that integration is more important than education
It's that we, as a country, and as a culture, accept that poor, minority schools are going to be bad. It's that we not only accept it, but support when people, white, black, brown, yellow or whatever, want to run from the problem, instead of fixing it.
It's one thing to be a 'throw-away' culture when it comes to the cheap plastic junk that surrounds us. It's entirely another when it comes to neighborhoods and sub-cultures.
As a side-note, I would contend that letting students run is more of a social indoctrination, because it leads to ignorance of others, and maintains the current status quo. But that's just my opinion.
No, and I apologize for not explaining. What I meant was that, regardless of reason, it happens. I'm not saying that vouchers are inherently evil. What I'm saying is that segregation, regardless of reason, is evil. We shouldn't allow the white kids to leave. We shouldn't accept that schools with lots of minority students are just simply going to be bad schools.
The problem is that we have a culture that, instead of FIGHTING the fact that schools are terrible, simply because of the community they are in, insists that letting those that can leave do so is best.
No, seriously. The people that claim that unions only protect lazy teachers have no idea what the current system of education in the USA looks like, except through what the major news organizations feed them. If your job required not just you to perform, but also to raise 30-40 humans because their parents won't, pay for your supplies out of pocket, and require 10-12 hour days 6 days a week, would you be willing to go with 'the next big movement'?
The problem is that teachers are jaded. Everything 'good' that comes along is usually just a rehash of what has been done to them in the past, or an excuse to privatize education
Oh, and Michelle Rhea was, in my opinion, just a shill for privatization, so her buddies could get their hands on that sweet, sweet Department of Education money. But, that's just my opinion
It's not that they're being scrutinized. It's not that there is a need for evaluation. It's that they are receiving more scrutiny, and must be evaluated much more publicly than ANY other public sector employee.
I'd like to see some public evaluations of the DMV or post office, thank you. Or, ANY organization that receives governmental money for that matter. You want this government contract to build air conditioners for our troops? I want full and public disclosure of how this money is actually being spent.
How does one evaluate teachers based on the same demographic and quality students, when most states (and even some districts within states and further, even some schools within districts) have different evaluation methods?
That isn't meant to be sarcastic, that's an honest question
Did you just put bad family in quotes? Does this imply that there aren't families that devalue education? Or is it meant to simply imply that schools are not effected by the surrounding area?
Let me put this in words you'll understand, small ones
I sell pig meat. I live in Jew area. Jew no eat pig. My store close soon.
See the one-syllable words I used for you?
But insults aside, really. I whole-heatedly support performance based evaluations, I whole heatedly support performance bonuses. I do not support vouchers simply because it leads to racial segregation . I also do not support performance based evaluations and merit pay in a vacuum. These two things can not exist in the forms currently being touted.
We have to find a way to evaluate teachers IN CONTEXT, and without BLAMING THEM FOR EVERYTHING BAD IN THE COUNTRY.
This. I don't care what the governmental system is, I don't care what the religion is. There will always be corruption because of one or two asshats. In the US, we have some honest and good republicans, just as we have some honest and goodness democrats, green party, socialists, communists, fascists, KKK, Black Panthers, etc.
The problem is that the good ones, of any group are always overshadowed by the asshats. Always.
is hyperbole

No, you need that tv; just like you need a new car today; just like you need a smart phone.
Just like you need Brawndo, remember, It Has Electrolytes!

Nah, it makes perfect sense:

Nope. Step 1: 501(c)(3). Step 2:Time for some sweet, sweet grants. Step 3: STEP 2 WAS PROFIT, DON'T BE GREEDY.

He was wrong, by the way. I didn't get an STD.
Worst horror movie ever.

Stop it
Subsequently, in my attempt to be humorous for you, I ended up asking a friend, "what do you think the mathematical symbol for chipmunk would be."
It turns out it's even funnier out of context.
One has to wonder just how hard the petroleum industry will fight these developments, though.

I'm voting NO ASSHAT 2012
Oh, That was passed in 1995, or 1996. I can never remember. Here's the legal document on that Good luck deciphering the legal speak.
Why does it have to be this article that makes you think that all educators are stupid? This is what I do not understand about people.
If an engineer makes a bad bridge, it collapses and people die, do we look at EVERY other engineer and say, "YOU DID THIS, IDIOTS!!!"
So, why then, do we judge all educators on the merit (or lack-thereof) of a few?
