  1. Want to find "good" music? on Downloaded Music Gets More Expensive · · Score: 1

First define what you think is "good", is it indie, rock, rap, country, etc.?

Then find an independent radio station that broadcasts a stream on the internet.

Listen to the station and hear artists you may have never heard before, and some ones you have.

Subscribe to that radio station's mailing list and get daily emails of the playlists.

This provides you the opportunity to listen to a variety of music in the genre you like and discover great music with out having to shell out your hard earned money for artists that don't sound so great on the albums other 12 songs as they do on the radio or MTV.

Check out KEXP(in seattle). IMHO, they are leading edge in terms of great music.

  2. Chance at becoming policy?! on Microsoft, Yahoo Investigate Spam Solution · · Score: 1

I wonder how great of a chance this has of becoming policy, considering that one of the individuals quoted with a disparaging remark in the article, David Farber, is considered the grand father of the Internet as well as serving as the Chief Technologist for Federal Communications Commission.

  3. Possible, but not always friendly on SSH or VNC From Your Cell Phone? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have a Treo 270 using a GPRS network, allowing for near ISDN speeds for network connections. Like other users that have posted, i regularly use a combination of TopGun SSH and Mergic VPN for getting into my corporate network when away from a computer.

From my experience, due to limited screen real estate, it's really hard to do very complex actions via this combination. However, in a pinch,
you can access a mission critical box and perform a restart of a service. With praticalities aside though, it's super cool to have this type of power in the palm of your hand (no pun intended).

I've also used VNC for the Treo using the same VPN tunneling and it's very hard to use due to bandwith restrictions.

  4. Re:Why... on Eclipse in Action · · Score: 1

    > Would you want to compile to a directory outside
    > your workspace?

well, this one is easy to answer. say you are working on a J2EE web application in which you have multiple components. due to the complex nature of the web application and it's componetization, you package it to a deployment directory. say /opt/deploy.

if you want quick turn-around on compile, reload application and refresh the web page. you'll want to compile to the ./WEB-INF/classes directory in the deployment directory instead of the ./build directory in your project.

if you can't do this, you need to have an extra, time consuming step, of copying the changed classes to the deployment classes directory.

when you are doing this all day, the ability to compile outside of the project workspace saves LOTS of time.

  5. Use exercise as a work break on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1

i use exercise as a work break, especially when working on a really tough problem.

i find that it doesn't have to even be that long of an exercise session. typically, i'll try to coincide my workout w/ the early afternoon.

also, vary it up. i alternate between biking, running and going to the gym to lift a few weights.

besides getting/staying in shape, the added bonus is that usually you come back to your work with a fresh perspective that is condusive to problem solving.

  6. Re:best ide ? on Eclipse in Action · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm definitely on board w/ this. I was an active user of Eclipse for about 8 months, and after trying out IDEA i switched and left Eclipse behind. Soon afterwards, my entire company followed and we all now use IDEA.

One of my biggest complaints with Eclipse was the inability to open a file or compile to a directory outside of the project workspace. Additionally, i found the refactoring to be slow when compared to IDEA.

  7. Rubbish on Artificial Intelligence in Poker · · Score: 0

Since so much poker strategy is reading human expression/emotion to glean the quality of your opponents hand, wouldn't this require computers to have emotions to truly play poker in an effective manner?

the robot from Lost In Space gathered around the poker table in those silly costumes fromt the Dogs Playing Poker picture.
