Borland also has a free JBuilder personal (previously called Foundation), for tryout and personal use.
Be aware: software development in general, and Java software in general will each eat your computer for lunch. You're doing both, so make sure your machines are up to date.
Okay, I'm really pulling this one out of my [thin air], but given the budget involved, you might be able to contract advanced-access to prototypes of those 50GB/side "super DVD" writers. 160 discs per day would be easy to store.
On a related note, 1000 x 3KB per second can be handled by 3 8x CDR drives, thought you'd need to store 1280 discs per day.
We're all sheep cuz.. well, humans are naturally sheep, but our goverment-run schools have not trained us otherwise. Remember how boring history class was? That's intentional: if you don't know history, you can't argue with the government.
Yah, X10's actually pretty fun, despite the annoying ads. The system is slightly flaky, (my lights will occasionally turn themselves on or off) so you wouldn't wanna put anything critical on it. Maybe you could get creative, and plug the machine into 2 modules in parallel, so the loss of one module wouldn't shut you down.
The appliance module is limited to 500 watts, so don't stuff your computer too full. But if you already have a Linux firewall, you can hang the X10 transmitter off that, and run everything. Protecting the firewall itself is left as an exercise for the reader.
I'm not convinced.. The gov't would require the ability to authenticate communications for legal purposes (assuming authenticated texts are legally binding.) Can this be done without also giving the gov't the ability to winnow?
I sent Rivest e-mail.. I'll see if he responds.

Three, why are the schools strapped for cash? Because people don't want to pass school bond measures when they see it's going to affect their property taxes.
Privatize all schools! Get the tax thing out of the way, and funding problems disappear! It's called "free market", and it works for everything else, doesn't it?
The label keep looking for the quick hit because THAT'S WHAT YOU BUY. You have a short attention span, the labels are just providing what you want. Look at the computer review sites.. they're complaining about a 'slow summer!' It's the same problem - the shiny new stuff SELLS better than old reliable stuff. And it's the same with computer software - you'd rather buy a bugful v3.0 than a stable v2.3.
So quit whining - you're getting exactly what you want!

ATI has the only BALANCED solution

ATi Radeon 8500

I love ATI, 'cuz they put in features that ACTUALLY MATTER in my day-to-day use. Wonderful picture quality, DVD playback, video playing and recording, and "good enough" 3D performance. If you only buy 1 card, buy an ATI. (Matrox was in this exact same market, but they got scared and ran.)
The new Radeon beat the GeForce 3 in several benchmarks, even against nVidia's new Detonator 4 drivers. Note that this means that nVidia released an expensive card that didn't run at full speed. Does ATI do the same thing, or are their drivers optimized before relase? I dunno.
What's really impressive is that ATI can match the power of a GeForce while providing all the other features. You get excellent picture quality, DVD playback, and a complete Tivo all in one package.
The price is high (but remember it's a 64MB card!) but should be reasonable around Christmas.
Maybe you should finish the site before you announce it.. And then, just maybe, you might want to post the correct URL, but only if you actually want visitors.
This whole arguement is absurd! Take a look at the cost of the entire workstation or office, and then try to tell me $700 for a chair is significant! Why, the computer alone is $2000-5000, and they need to be replaced every 1-2 years! Chairs can last 10 years, if they're any good.
Like the noisy AC said back there, ALL CPUs ARE CHEAP TODAY! If the computer is for work, then even the most expensive computer will easily pay for itself. If the computer is for home and doesn't earn you any money, then the only question is: How much do you wanna spend?
It's not a question of price/performance, it's of price/happiness. If the dollars make you happier, then keep them; if the megahertz makes you happier, then buy them!
#17 is all wrong: Live action and real exploration will be dead by then, having been replaced by our version of the changelings' Great Link - the interceph. Relatively passive entertainment such as this will be rendered realtime, giving you an experience as good as the interceph unit you purchased.
But few will watch, since the interceph will let you be a starship captain in whichever universe you like. And it will be much more fun -- shoot the aliens, but no paperwork afterward!
I suspect the colors are truer than life.. This picture is a little too colorful for my taste.. I bet the digital artist took license with the colors, and boosted them. S/he just got carried away with that picture.
In fact, the color saturation reminds me of my digital camara, which may be an artifact of the camera used to digitize the original plates.
Or maybe they just applied too much S in Photoshop.
We use Borland JBuilder around here, and I like it alot. Color coding editor, debugger, visual GUI designer, and database controls and classes are all built in. If you ever lusted after the RAD capabilities of Visual Basic, JBuilder has all that too.
Borland also has a free JBuilder personal (previously called Foundation), for tryout and personal use.
