"Why not just compile everything yourself? Why not just use Debian?" Well, guess what, ladies and gentlemen -- I run a profitable business off of my servers and I don't have time to sit on SecurityFocus all day and make sure I'm not affected by the myriad set of would-be bugs on my servers. I trust my vendor to test the updates on their set of supported hardware and release them to me in a timely manner. I will then run the vendor-supported update tool and download them.
I feel obliqued to answer regardless of the fact that you choose to be a coward.
Exactly what kind of profitable business you are doing? Yes you could trust your vendors to supply the latest fixes to you in timely fashion, but you don't seem to get the idea of risk management. If your 'profitable business' cannot bear the loss resulted in not-up-to-time fixes from vendors, you must check closely with latest security updates.
Since you mentioned security update site like security focus, have you realize that there's nothing you can do when your vendor like Microsoft who don't give a damn to the security problems in their products and you've no choice but to remove the problematic products until they are generously enough to release the patch?
In conclude, you either has no clue on the word 'risk' or you simply have way too much money to spare(or your boss has way too much spare money to hire the like of you).:)
Btw, I found that people here thought that Hong Kong's location based system is equals to GPS system. It's in fact a system running on GSM network with special sim card and a normal mobile phone.
It's more accurate that civilian GPS system as I mentioned above. Besides, Pinpoint relys heavily on the telco providing that services to them. They are only marketing this technology. Besides, they sell security system and GPS too.
is to use a special GSM sim card return signals to nearest 6 GSM base-stations. The central computer can determine the approx. location of this person within this 6 base-stations.
The accuracy is only up to ~25M diameter. However it's still good as civilian GPS does not give accurate result due to the fact that US Government deliberately inserting noise in GPS reading for non-military use. (it's THEIR GPS satalites nevertheless.:)
However, it has several problems:
1) Special GSM sim must be made
2) It's very proprietary that different telcos have different implementations of it
3) The worker can always turn off the phone to hide his location(it can only be solved by firing that insubordinate staff:/)
4) Last but most important, it does not work on the sea, because there are no base station there. The tracking system will always return the location of the nearest shore.
If look as if 4) is not a big problem, but don't forget Hong Kong has a pretty big harbour in the middle, and in fact people working on the sea needs this technology badly!
But, a basic BSP+PVS engine that supports Q3 maps and shaders CAN and HAS been developed in a weekend. I've DONE it.
It's nothing compare to my perpetual space station that support the life of entire human race I built at lunchtime. I just didn't launch it - I mean launching it to space, not launching it under GPL.
Forget about asking a copy of it. I just built it - i've DONE it, all you've to do is trust me.
When you started to name yourself like 'K1lj00Nl00UrAsS' and became real good after killing 1000+ people or so, you want to get a better name so as to gain acceptance among noble knighthood.:)
The problem is that this problem only exists in http://www.slashdot.org and no where else with the same code base. This new addition would be pretty useless for others.
(I always find it amazing a high-hit-rate site as such could not make profit. Well, nevermind...)
but to require a proprietary chemical to do it is lame.I'm sure there are ways to do this with water, right?
Such chemical are not very complicated compound and can be OEM very easily just like people OEM the inj cartridges, provided that there's a economic drive.
However, you probably wouldn't want to do it with water, which is too corrosive.:)

1) twist the rubber band before let go it will fly further and straighter. 2) the ultima weapon is a telephone, it's a reloadable weapon as long as you still hold the handset
1. MS partners with Nvidia, helps crashing their major competitor(goodbye voodoo) 2. MS crashes their close partner Nvidia by destroy their entire product line(blame the damn MIT studnet!) 3. Seek more partnerships
With DRM/Palladium, replace "Nvidia" above with any other company name, repeat.
til then I always thought the Start Wars II and LoRs DVDs in my possession are original.....they have Dolby Digital 5.1, scense selection, extras and credits...

Microsoft really has to pay Scott Culp well because it's very hard to defend for such defective products. :)

So NS7 is 471?

After 302 posts, no one caught this guy repeating old /. story.
/. editors' ability to recognize old news. I think he got the answer. :)
I think he's just testing

with roach. At least, with tecnology advance, they are doing it with less disgusting little creatures...oh wait.

I live in Hong Kong, but I didn't realize ibiblio has been hosting such a great site. I'd like to use to space to thank Paul!!

Eject_Flaming_Toast_At_User();
At least this virus could only affect user, not root.
oh wait...
Glad you said 'nearly'.
One of our 2K server went blue after migrating to Athlon-MP. We had similar experience migrating NT to different hardware platforms.
And the hardware in question are hardly faulty. Well, is it our fault to migrate system to new hardware in the first place? I don't know.
to those 200,000 unsold XBox stocked in Japan? Landfill? ;)
I see it now...let's say:
1. MS partners with Nvidia, helps crashing their major competitor(goodbye voodoo)
2. MS crashes their close partner Nvidia by destroy their entire product line(blame the damn MIT studnet!)
3. Seek more partnerships
With DRM/Palladium, replace "Nvidia" above with any other company name, repeat.
Even a close partner such as Nvidia could be fscked up hard this way, I wonder people would still trust other proprietary security control by MS.
:)
A slight changes in code could do such a damage, no wonder why MS want to push DRM and Palladium.
for our windows OSs is actually a Linux boot disk with parted
(any major distro has parted) parted can copy, resize, move etc. partitions like a command line Partition Magic.
Can't resize NTFS though, but we can still move it with dd.

my client who runs simcard development business paid ~US$100,000 royalty and signed a NDA before any actually development started.
So you wanna hack this damn little thing and get away with it?
This thing is no toy. Billions dollors businesses are driven by this *damn* little thing.
It's been 10+ years since I bought my last floppy drive. My new dual Athlon-MPs box is still using the floppy drive which I bought for my 286.
:)
I think I made my point: this damn thing is by far the most reliable hardware in computer history.
