This is going to be a difficult question that entirely depends on what you are planning to do.
If you plan to learn business based programs I would suggest OpenSolaris. It is more in line with big business than any *BSD will ever be. You will find that fortune 500 companies use Oracle, Symantec Veritas products (cluster service, Volume manager, NetBackup etc..), or require Solaris for other business applications. The only other major *nix flavors in big business is HP-UX, AIX, and Linux. For the most part HP-UX and AIX are going bye bye and being replaced by big Linux boxes.
On the other hand, if you like the Web and want to learn to program, Try out FreeBSD. It has a much more open structure and an open user base that is more than willing to help solve complex problems.
To plug a con is one thing, but to make rude comments against something you have not seen is another. It just shows your obvious lack of intelligence in the matter. Cansecwest is a good conference full of great speakers, however 1600$CAD (1,200 USA) is an extremely high price for most of us students of life. If you have a big corporation to sponsor your attendance to Cansecwest, go for it! However, I unfortunately do not have that luxury and neither do a lot of people currently working/struggling in the technology sector. As for the comment about art, well I enjoy the artistic side of technology. I find myself attracted to all forms of art from music to paintings. I believe that all good coders, hackers, radio enthusiasts, and the like are art oriented. I feel this way because technology is dependent on creativity. Without creativity and the "art" of life, you are stuck with something quite redundant and boring. Just my two cents.
I will be representing the Opte.org Internet Mapping project at this years Notacon conference. We will have neat pictures, movies, 3d animations, t-shirts, and various other swag to give away. Ohh ya.. And Source code! We do hope to have the source code for the Opte project released sometime around then (maybe before, maybe at the conference). Hope to see you all there!
Linux SuSE on Opteron vs. OS X on Mac?
on
G5 vs Opteron, Finally
·
· Score: 1, Redundant
Personally, I would love to see the same tests performed under a standard install of Linux SuSE (SMP) for AMD, and Mac OS X standard install. There should be several cross-platform *nix benchmark utilities out there that will run on both. Anyone up to doing this and then posting on Slashdot??:-P
I would contact your local police department. It may also be a good point to tell them that they might want to search for local Credit Card Fraud problems, because they could be associated with this matter. It appears that it would be much more of a local crime instead of a Federal Offence, simply because it does not have any grand financial loss. Local police departments are not all bad. In fact, most will gladly put you in touch with administrative personnel that are normally knowledgeable with computers. Just remember, Once you involve the legal system, You lose all rights to your equipment!!! If you contact Law enforcement at all, they can come in and take your equipment with a court order at anytime, and they are generally NOT nice about it! Most of the collection personnel do not even know what the lawsuit is about, and as far as they know, youâ(TM)re a pedophile. Generally, it is not this way with correct cooperation and procedures, however be prepared for anything.
It would be really interesting when people decided to put one of these things in there pocket without turning it off. Every time they set down, it could be executing a program and running amuck. I guess it would be no worse than forgetting to lock your cell phone key pad and accidentally dialing 911 on it.:-/
This is NOT the first time, and I do not believe that it will be the last. I work and attend a medium sized college and I happen to know from other employees that our systems have been compromised on several occasions, and in fact they are still being compromised. I do not believe that any critical information has been stolen, but the security of the critical systems at our nations colleges and universities needs to improve. Our college refuses to publicly admit that they have had a serous breach or deny any knowledge of current security problems. It's quit frustrating to be a computer security enthusiast and attend a college that refuses to admit they have a serious problem.
I attend Baker College in Flint Michigan. It's a dead city, but the college does have a decent Associates / Bachelors degree. I am currently obtaining the Bachelors of Applied Science in Open Systems Technology. I have learned a tremendous amount while I have been here for 4 years. They not only teach you the classes (MCSE, Solaris, Cisco etc...) but they also take the time to teach the theory and give you antiquate practice on the equipment with labs. There website is at http://www.baker.edu It does however have the same problems as any other College. Every once in a while you get a horrible teacher, or take classes that have almost nothing to do with your degree. This is expected from any place of higher education. It teaches humility.
At the Hospital I work at, we have a very strict policy about old hard drives, tapes and optical disks. The policy states: Hard drives must be demagnetized and physically destroyed before disposal (sledge hammer). Tapes and Optical Disks must be destroyed by incineration.
Need I say more? Hour hospital has pretty good policy about data going outside the premises of the hospital, however their security administrator for the inside network is not very good. Guess that's what you get when you someone an important job like this and give him 40,000$ less than the industry standard salary.

You know what? I could care less if people look it up :-).
