If you offer your services as a contractor, you don't have to be dedicated to one company- you can bounce around to as many (or as little) as you'd like.. Most companies like this method of business now days because they don't have have to put people on a full time payroll (because american companies are cheap). Also, you never have to worry about your job being outsourced to India (job stealing bastards) Most commercial banks have good 401k programs, thats not an issue- however health insurance might be a little high (especially someone like blue cross blue sheild). Overall, I think its a better route- thats what I will be doing within a few months, I tire of the crappy pay, and the fact that no one in my department works other than I. Congrats on the recent marrage- I know the fears, I just got married in Oct, and we can't survive on what she makes, but then, you have to ask yourself, would you rather be misrable for the rest of your life (I always come home in a bad mood), or do something truely fulfilling and rewarding?
I feel your pain. I drive about 56 miles a day round trip from Lake Wylie, SC to Downtown Charlotte, NC. I-77 is a parking lot during rush hour, so it's constant stop and go. She's got flowmasters and a K&N fenderwall intake which doesn't help the process, but I agree- gas comes with the territory of owning a v8. (Plus they sound too damn good to get rid of)
Hehehe, its funny when I see you computer folks stagger into my industry! (I've worked for both the phone co and business systems dealers, I'm certified on several switches) I agree with most of the people- building a PBX isn't an easy task, but if your really interested, I'm working an analog system right now using a basic stamp as the cpu (basic stamp II will do neat things like output all the progress tones [busy, dialtone, etc]) will post nfo as it becomes available. I would HIGHLY recommend against using a PC for any type of PBX system (cough cough, Intertel's failed Axxent platform) they are just not reliable enough for anything other then a voicemail.. If you want a quick fix, Panasonic is tops for home users, and it seamlessly integrates with systems such as HAI/On Q's home automation products. ESI also makes an all in one cheap digital keyset called the IVX 128 plus (http://www.esi-estech.com) The nice thing about the IVX over the Panasonic is you can snap on a VoIP module- phones are expected to be SIP compliant soon) IVX' has a built in voicemail, built in MoH, true caller ID integration, etc, etc. email me [zeropanic at bellsouth dot net] if you need any extra info, will be glad to provide it. Intertel and Comdial have new entry level platforms as well, but I imagine the intertel will cost you your wife, kids and your soul (over priced) and the Comdial DX-80 is very buggy right now.
Is this another failed attempt at a sega channel like platform? Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Sega channel (For the whole year they had it here.. GRRR TIME WARNER!), and I prefer my Dreamcast over the Playstation, but I can't help asking myself if this is going to be another failed attempt at something cool that ends up being junk I collect. (Time warner told me not to return the Sega Channel adapter, they named to be it worthless.)
I jumped the gun a bit on this one.. It appears that a bootloader disc won't do the job.. You have to make a bootable disc! (I wish I'd pay attention to what I write more).
We've had it in Charlotte for some time. Though it's not required at the moment to dial 10 digits, BellSouth has been passing out material about how to 10 digit dial. They have been advertising on the radio that come 2001 it will be required to 10 digit dial and to practice now. Frankly anyone who can't add the 3 digit area code to a number should have their phone service taken away from them because they must be too stupid to use it in the first place!:)
Heh, I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembered this.. I visited their site the other day when I was reminded of it- its still as vague as ever.

thats what I said, dumbass. Screw x86, I'm on a G4 right now.
Thats like asking me to switch from a BMW 525 to a Kia Rio.

And I might as well be wiping my ass with $20 when it comes to milage.
Maybe now Symantec will take my claims of registering bonzi buddy as a virus seriously. *evil grin*
What I'm wondering is why if the company is based in Southren Cali, that it is being released in Europe first?
Turn on an old Mac PowerPC with out any memory in it.. You hear the sound of glass breaking.
Check my previous post.. I've been in the industry for awhile, and we've done many residental systems.

You need a bootloader disc (Like Utopia's) I cannot tell you where to get this.. Legal reasons! :)
